The role of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders and anxiety on pain catastrophizing, disability, and illness perceptions in patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders: a cross-sectional study.

Whiplash is an injury caused by a sudden acceleration-deceleration of the head, transferring energy to the spine. The clinical symptoms after the injury are known as whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), and the mechanisms of its chronicity and recovery remain unclear. We aimed to explore the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and anxiety with disability, pain catastrophizing, and illness perceptions in patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders (cWAD). We carried out a multi-center cross-sectional study in which 120 participants with cWAD were recruite

Crystalline Phase Induction Strategy for the Design of Luminescent Lanthanide Coordination Polymers: Toward Plastic Waste Recycling.

Reactions in water between a lanthanide chloride and the disodium salt of tetrachloro-phthalate (tcpa2-) lead to a family of isostructural c … monstrate that luminance was optimized when compared with those of F1 despite similar intermetallic energy transfers. This observation was rationalized by theoretical calculations that suggest that the greater rigidity of the crystal structure F2 could be responsible for this notable difference in the luminescence properties.

Quantitative wound ballistic analysis of gelatin head phantoms by computed tomography using the total crack length method.

Gelatin-based phantoms are appropriate simulants of human soft tissue and can be used for ballistic experiments. Computed tomography (CT) is useful for quantitative wound ballistics analysis and has been applied to gelatin blocks. This study aimed to create total crack length (TCL) profiles along the penetration depth in head phantoms after ballistic experiments with different types of ammunition at varying distances using CT data. Sixteen commercially available gelatin-based head phantoms were subjected to ballistic testing with six different types of ammunition. Nine were contact shots, whil

Methane bioconversion to methanol by Methylotuvimicrobium buryatense 5GB1C: mechanistic insights using molecular simulations.

This paper reports homology modeling and molecular simulation studies of methane bioconversion to methanol by the particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) enzyme complex in Methylotuvimicrobium buryatense 5GB1C. Homology modeling predicted the 3D structures of key enzymes (PmoA, PmoB, PmoC) involved. Molecular docking studies revealed the binding energies of -1.75, -1.84 and -1.79 kcal/mol for methane and -2.13, -2.45 and -2.35 kcal/mol for methanol with PmoA, PmoB and PmoC, respectively, in the presence of cofactors of NADH, Cu cation and oxygen. Molecular dynamics simulations provided furthe

Investigation on Polyether Sulfone Toughening Epoxy Vitrimer: Curing and Dynamic Properties.

Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A crosslinking with glutaric anhydride is used to form the conventional "covalent adaptive network", polyether sulfone (PES) by coiling and aggregating on the adaptive network is used to significantly increase the uncured resin viscosity for improving the processability of epoxy resin, but inevitably affecting the curing reaction and dynamic transesterification reaction. This study investigates the crucial roles of PES in curing dynamics and stress relaxation behavior. The results indicate that although PES does not directly participate in the crosslinking reactio

A novel AB3-type trimeric zinc(II)-phthalocyanine as an electrochromic and optical limiting material.

Recent advances in the practical applications of metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) in different technological fields have stimulated us to design and synthesize a new asymmetric AB3-type trimeric zinc(ii)-phthalocyanine (1). This bulky and high molecular weight compound was characterized by elemental analysis, 1H, 13C DEPT, and 1H-1H NOESY NMR, HR MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, UV-vis, and FT-IR (ATR) techniques. In-depth electrochemical studies show that 1 displays quasi-reversible three one-electron reductions and two one- or two-electron oxidation processes, rather than any redox processes includ

Within the human larynx, the ventricular folds serve primarily as a protecting valve during swallowing. They are located directly above the … second effect results from an increase in the glottal flow resistance that enhances the aerodynamic energy transfer into the vocal folds. This effect reduces the onset threshold of the pressure difference across the glottis.

Wound ballistics and blast injuries.

Wounds due to gunshot and explosions, while usually observed during battlefield combat, are no longer an exceptional occurrence in civilian practice in France. The principles of wound ballistics are based on the interaction between the projectile and the human body as well as the transfer of energy from the projectile to tissues. The treatment of ballistic wounds relies on several principles: extremity wound debridement and absence of initial closure, complementary medical treatment, routine immobilization, revision surgery and secondary closure. Victims of explosions usually present with a co

Glucose metabolism and astrocyte-neuron interactions in the neonatal brain.

Glucose is essentially the sole fuel for the adult brain and the mapping of its metabolism has been extensive in the adult but not in the neonatal brain, which is believed to rely mainly on ketone bodies for energy supply. However, glucose is absolutely indispensable for normal development and recent studies have shed light on glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway and metabolic interactions between astrocytes and neurons in the 7-day-old rat brain. Appropriately (13)C labeled glucose was used to distinguish between glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway during development. Experiment

The paradox of the contrasting roles of chronic magnesium deficiency in metabolic disorders and field cancerization.

Magnesium (Mg(2+)) deficiency is common in metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance. These disorders are also associated with a high incidence of cancer. Mg(2+) is the regulator par excellence of metabolism, largely through its role as a cofactor for all phosphoryl transfers in the cell. Because Mg(2+) deficiency inhibits energy production it might be expected to inhibit tumor production. However, the high incidence of cancer in metabolic disorders makes that seem unlikely. In order to understand this seeming paradox, it is important to understand the regula

Pentacoordinated phosphorus revisited by high-level QM/MM calculations.

Enzymes catalyzing phosphoryl transfer reactions are extremely efficient and are involved in crucial biochemical processes. The mechanisms of these enzymes are complex due to the diversity of substrates that are involved. The reaction can proceed through a pentacoordinated phosphorus species that is either a stable intermediate or a transition state (TS). Because of this, the first X-ray structure of a pentacoordinated phosphorus intermediate in the beta-phosphoglucomutase enzyme aroused great interest but also much controversy. To provide new insights into the nature of that structure, we hav

Delamination of a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner associated with titanium deposits on the cobalt-chromium modular femoral head following dislocation.

Retrieval studies of total hip replacements with highly cross-linked ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene liners have shown much less surface damage than with conventional ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene liners. A recent revision hip replacement for recurrent dislocation undertaken after only five months revealed a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner with a large area of visible delamination. In order to determine the cause of this unusual surface damage, we analysed the bearing surfaces of the cobalt-chromium femoral head and the acetabular liner with scanning electron microsc

Three competitive transition states in the benzoin condensation compared to the clear rate-determining step in the Cannizzaro reaction.

The Cannizzaro reaction ("RX C") and the benzoin reaction ("RX B") were investigated by density functional theory calculations. Reaction models (benzaldehyde)2 + X(-) + (H2O)n [for X(-) = OH(-) (RX C) n = 8, and for X(-) = CN(-) (RX B) n = 8 or n = 14] were adopted. Three transition states (TSs) were obtained for RX C, and the rate-determining step was confirmed to be the hydride shift. The single electron transfer path was also obtained, which is supported by the C-O(-)CH[double bond, length as m-dash]O attraction. In RX B, seven TSs were obtained. The CC bond formation TS, TS4(B), was found

Application of ergonomics principles of burdening of the worker in the process of clothes cutting.

In the technological procedure of clothes cutting, lifting, transferring and putting of textile bundles on the machine for laying of cutting layers are considered to be the most difficult physical tasks. Upon standing position of the worker, centre of the mass is relatively high and hydrostatic pressure of blood column is increased influencing relatively increased blood circulation at the end of extremities. High incidence of muscle-bone and other health problems occur although this job has been classified as an easy one according to the criteria of energy consumption. These are ever growing c

Implanted pulsatile balloon device for simulation of neurovascular compression syndromes in animals.

A self-contained neurovascular compression simulator (NCS) has been designed to function as an artificial artery that pulsates with the heart. When implanted in animals, this device simulates those naturally occurring situations in which there is compression of nervous elements in the region of the brain stem or other areas by aberrant, or ectatic branches of normal arteries. The NCS consists of an intra-aortic balloon, a smaller (cephalic) balloon, a connecting tube, and an injection port, all fabricated of polyurethane-silicone compounds. With each heart systole, the rise in intra-aortic pre

Benzoyl-coenzyme A reductase (dearomatizing), a key enzyme of anaerobic aromatic metabolism. ATP dependence of the reaction, purification and some properties of the enzyme from Thauera aromatica strain K172.

Anoxic metabolism of many aromatic compounds proceeds via the common intermediate benzoyl-CoA. Benzoyl-CoA is dearomatized by benzoyl-CoA reductase (dearomatizing) in a two-electron reduction step, possibly yielding cyclohex-1,5-diene-1-carboxyl-CoA. This process has to overcome a high activation energy and is considered a biological Birch reduction. The central, aromatic-ring-reducing enzyme was investigated for the first time in the denitrifying bacterium Thauera aromatica strain K172. A spectrophotometric assay was developed which was strictly dependent on MgATP, both with cell extract and

Understanding the interaction between α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and potential Cu/Zn metallo-drugs of benzimidazole derived organic motifs: A multi-spectroscopic and molecular docking study.

Drug-binding and interactions with plasma proteins strongly affect their efficiency of delivery, hence considered as a key factor in determining the overall pharmacological action. Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), a second most abundant plasma protein in blood circulation, has unique drug binding ability and involved in the transportation of various compounds. Here, we have investigated the mechanism of interaction between AGP and potential Cu/Zn metallo-drugs of benzimidazole derived organic motifs (CuL2 and ZnL2, where L is Schiff base ligand) by applying integrated spectroscopic, biophysica
