OBJECTIVE: To report the possible association between the use of oestrogen replacement therapy and endometriosis in a postmenopausal woman.
METHODS: We present a case of a postmenopausal, previously hysterectomised, woman who received hormonal replacement therapy and developed a large broad ligament cyst. Two years prior to her presentation she had been complaining of pelvic pain and deep dyspareunia.

Extensive pelvic lymph node metastasis in the absence of risk factors was noticed at surgical staging for endometrial cancer in a 55-year-old postmenopausal women. On exploration there was a dilemma as to the disappearing lymph nodes which subsequently proved to be asymptomatic ureteric calculi. The need to palpate the pelvic side walls at the time of surgery for endometrial cancer even in cases when no nodal enlargement is detected preoperatively is highlighted.

A case of xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis in a 47-year-old woman is presented. Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is an uncommon form of chronic inflammation that is destructive to affected organs; it is characterized by the presence of lipid-filled macrophages with admixed lymphocytes, plasma cells, and neutrophils. Only a few cases of xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis have been reported to date. The case presented here is associated with Escherichia coli infection, endometriosis, and an intrauterine device.

Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD), a multifocal proliferation of smooth muscle like cells, has so far been described in 48 cases. Most of them were pregnant women or women taking the oral contraceptives, which supported the hypothesis that LPD is associated with hyperestrogenism. We report a 65-year-old women, without history of taking exogenous estrogens, which suggests that factors other than hormonal influences may contribute to pathogenesis of LPD.

The aim of this investigation was to compare the response of small arteries of the human tubo-ovarian vasculature to certain vasoactive agents. Ring preparations of the arteries were isolated and mounted in tissue chambers for isometric recording of wall tension. The arteries were exposed to the vasoactive agents adrenalin, prostaglandin F2 alpha and two vasopressin analogues. Reproductive organs from mature Small East African zebu (SEAZ) heifers and cows slaughtered at the Morogoro abattoir were collected twice a month and evaluated over a period of 12 months. Out of the 402 animals from which reproductive organs were taken, 54% were pregnant, 24% were actively cycling and 22% were non-cycling. Pelvic actinomycosis is uncommon and usually responsible for tubo-ovarian abscesses which are similar in aspect with nonactinomycotic abscesses. They are usually a complication of an intra-uterine device (IUD) that can be absent as in this case. The differential diagnosis is ovarian cancer. The role of the dynamic CT scan for differential diagnosis in this case is presented. Preoperative diagnosis in this affection is important because of the excellent response to Penicillin.
