Role of the ventral striatum in developing anorexia nervosa.

Functional imaging data in adult patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) support a dysfunctional signal in the ventral striatum as neural signature of AN. In the present study, development of this signal was investigated with the prediction that a characteristic pattern of ventral-striatal signalling will be shown in response to cues associated with food restriction that reflects the evolvement of starvation dependence over time. The signal was assessed in adolescent patients with AN, whose duration of illness was about five times shorter relative to the adult sample. During functional magnetic re

Loss of Maged1 results in obesity, deficits of social interactions, impaired sexual behavior and severe alteration of mature oxytocin production in the hypothalamus.

MAGED1, NECDIN and MAGEL2 are members of the MAGE gene family. The latter two of these genes have been involved in Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), which includes hyperphagia, repetitive and compulsive behaviors, and cognitive impairment. Here, we show that Maged1-deficient mice develop progressive obesity associated with hyperphagia and reduced motor activity. Loss of Maged1 also results in a complex behavioral syndrome that includes reduced social interactions and memory, deficient sexual behavior, as well as increased anxiety and self-grooming. Oxytocin (OT), which is produced in the hypothalam

Vitamin B12 transport from food to the body's cells--a sophisticated, multistep pathway.

Vitamin B(12) (B(12); also known as cobalamin) is a cofactor in many metabolic processes; deficiency of this vitamin is associated with megaloblastic anaemia and various neurological disorders. In contrast to many prokaryotes, humans and other mammals are unable to synthesize B(12). Instead, a sophisticated pathway for specific uptake and transport of this molecule has evolved. Failure in the gastrointestinal part of this pathway is the most common cause of nondietary-induced B(12) deficiency disease. However, although less frequent, defects in cellular processing and further downstream steps

Stimulants of Toll-like receptor (TLR)-2 and TLR-4 are abundant in certain minimally-processed vegetables.

Stimulants of the innate immune receptors Toll-like receptor (TLR)-2 and TLR4 have been shown to promote insulin resistance and atherosclerosis in animal models of these diseases. As minimally processed vegetables (MPV) can contain a relatively large bacterial load compared to other foodstuffs, we aimed to quantify the abundance of stimulants of TLR2 and TLR4 in MPV using a transfection-based bioassay calibrated with Escherichia coli LPS and the synthetic lipopeptide Pam(3)CSK(4). Of 5 classes of MPV and 3 classes of related vegetable products considered to be likely to contain a high microbia

Role of regulatory T-cells in H. pylori-induced gastritis and gastric cancer.

The current model of gastric carcinogenesis comprises the interaction of multiple risk factors. Besides Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection as the major risk factor for gastric carcinogenesis, environmental factors (e.g. high saline- or nitrosamine-containing food) and genetic susceptibility contribute to the development of gastric cancer (GC). It has been established that the topographical pattern of gastritis and its immune response are the main causes for the persistence of bacteria and the final clinical outcome. Regulatory immune cells, mostly regulatory FOXP3(+)CD4(+)CD25(+high) T-

Extraction of lycopene from tomato sauce with mushrooms (Agaricus brasiliensis), determined by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Lycopene belongs to the subgroup of non-oxygenated carotenoids with antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties that are comparatively more powerful than the majority of plasma carotenoids. When foodstuffs containing lycopene are processed, the cell wall breaks down during the thermal process--thus enabling the extraction of lycopene from chromoplasts, improving their bioavailability. Edible mushroom Agaricus brasiliensis stands out given its medicinal properties and antioxidant potential when used to treat heart diseases and to prevent cancer. Given the interest in lycopene-rich foods, the p

Transgenic approaches for cyanogen reduction in cassava.

For cassava to become a safe and acceptable crop, it is necessary to reduce the cyanogen levels in cassava foods. While this objective can be achieved by processing procedures, recent findings have shown that it is also possible to achieve it by suppression of cyanogen synthesis or by accelerating cyanogen turnover and volatilization. In 2003, cyanogen-free cultivars were generated by selective inhibition CYP79D1/D2 gene expression. The CYP79D1/D2 enzymes catalyze the first-dedicated step in cyanogen synthesis. Tissue-specific inhibition of CYP79D1/D2 expression in leaves lead to a 99% reducti

Chemical factors.

pH value, calcium, and phosphate and to a lesser extent fluoride content of a drink or foodstuff are important factors explaining erosive attack. They determine the degree of saturation with respect to tooth minerals, which is the driving force for dissolution. Solutions oversaturated with respect to dental hard tissue will not dissolve it. Addition of calcium (and phosphate) salts to erosive drinks showed protection of surface softening. Today, several Ca-enriched soft drinks are on the market or products with naturally high content in Ca and P are available (such as yoghurt), which do not so

Chronic fenfluramine treatment of rats with different ages: effects on brain oxidative stress-related parameters.

Fenfluramine is an anorectic drug widely used for the regulation of food intake that presents some adverse effects at the central and peripheral levels. d-Fenfluramine, an isomer of dl-fenfluramine, is postulated to be more effective and to induce less side effects than the racemic compound. These drugs act preferentially on the serotonergic system. Some authors have suggested that fenfluramine causes a degeneration of serotonergic neurons. Alterations of the serotonergic system are also observed during the aging process, and in this case, a relationship with reactive oxygen species has been a

Brown Seaweeds and Their Bioactive Compounds in Type 2 Diabetes: Mechanisms Underlying Metabolic Regulation.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and progressive β-cell dysfunction. Chronic hyperglycemia in T2D causes multi-organ and systemic damage, leading to a wide range of complications, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Brown seaweeds are increasingly recognized as promising marine-derived functional foods because they contain structurally unique bioactive compounds, including fucoidan, alginate, phlorotannins, and fucoxanthin. A growing body of

SSP Position Paper: The Influence of Nutrition on Active and Supportive Periodontal Therapy.

Periodontitis is currently understood as a multifactorial, biofilm-associated, and immunoinflammatory disease. Modern dietary patterns, often characterized by a high intake of free sugars and ultra-processed foods, deviate from evolutionary adaptations and are frequently associated with systemic inflammatory processes. This position paper by the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP) evaluates the role of nutrition as a modifiable risk factor and integrates nutritional considerations across all phases of periodontal therapy. Available evidence suggests that a plant-based, fiber-rich, and low-su

Extraction of natural aroma compounds from basidiomycete submerged fermentation of acid whey.

Natural aroma compounds are of increasing interest and here, 4-anisaldehyde, benzaldehyde and veratraldehyde were produced during a basidiomycete submerged fermentation of acid whey. An adsorption-based process was developed to concentrate these bioaromas using polymeric sorbents, Oasis HLB and PoraPak Rxn and food-grade aqueous ethanol. Dynamic binding capacities (DBC10%) determined using standard solutions ranged from 21.15 to 37.40 mg mL-1 on both adsorbents. When fermented acid whey was used as the feed, effective binding capacities were reduced due to competitive matrix interactions, high

Short neuropeptide F receptors regulate feeding and reproduction in Hyphantria cunea.

Neuropeptides are endogenous active compounds in the nervous system involved in regulating physiological processes such as growth, development, reproduction, and dynamic balance. In this study, two short neuropeptide F receptors (sNPFRs) were identified in Hyphantria cunea and exhibit different expression patterns among various developmental stages and tissues. The expression levels of sNPFR-A10 and sNPFR-A11 reach peak during the 6th and 1st instar larvae stages, respectively. Both genes are highly expressed in the midgut, Malpighian tubules, and testis. Silencing gene expressions by using sm
