Disrupted cognitive network revealed by task-induced brain entropy in schizophrenia.

Brain entropy (BEN), which measures the amount of information in brain activity, provides a novel perspective for evaluating brain function. Recent studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown that BEN during rest can help characterize brain function alterations in schizophrenia (SCZ). However, there is a lack of research on BEN using task-evoked fMRI to explore task-dependent cognitive deficits in SCZ. In this study, we evaluate whether the reduced working memory (WM) capacity in SCZ is possibly associated with dynamic changes in task BEN during tasks wi

Molecular mechanisms underlying structural plasticity of electroconvulsive therapy in major depressive disorder.

Although previous studies reported structural changes associated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in major depressive disorder (MDD), the underlying molecular basis of ECT remains largely unknown. Here, we combined two independent structural MRI datasets of MDD patients receiving ECT and transcriptomic gene expression data from Allen Human Brain Atlas to reveal the molecular basis of ECT for MDD. We performed partial least square regression to explore whether/how gray matter volume (GMV) alterations were associated with gene expression level. Functional enrichment analysis was conducted us

Specific Associations in the Alpha Frequency Between the Subcomponents of Rumination and the Subsystems of the Default Mode Network Among Bipolar I Disorder Patients.

Introduction: Rumination in bipolar disorder (BD) is well documented. Recent neuroimaging studies highlight the role of the default mode network (DMN) in rumination, while few studies have evaluated the DMN activity in BD rumination, particularly the underlying neuroelectrophysiology. Methods: A total of 44 patients with depressed bipolar I disorder (BD-I) and 46 healthy controls underwent resting-state magnetoencephalography. Two core hubs of the DMN, the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and anterior medial prefrontal cortex, together with the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the

Measurement of Cerebral Glucose Metabolism in the Visual Cortex Predicts the Prognosis of Hemianopia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Homonymous hemianopia caused by cerebrovascular disease may improve over time. This study investigated whether functional neuroimaging can predict the prognosis of hemianopia due to cerebral infarction. METHODS: We studied 19 patients (10 men and 9 women) with homonymous hemianopia and compared them with 34 healthy subjects (20 men and 14 women). Cerebral glucose metabolism was measured by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), 1 to 6 months after the onset. Bilateral regions of interest (ROIs) were selected from the posterior and, anterior st…

Study design features increase replicability in brain-wide association studies.

Brain-wide association studies (BWAS) are a fundamental tool in discovering brain-behaviour associations1,2. Several recent studies have shown that thousands of study participants are required for good replicability of BWAS1-3. Here we performed analyses and meta-analyses of a robust effect size index using 63 longitudinal and cross-sectional MRI studies from the Lifespan Brain Chart Consortium4 (77,695 total scans) to demonstrate that optimizing study design is critical for increasing standardized effect sizes and replicability in BWAS. A meta-analysis of brain volume associations with age in

Decreased structural pathways mediating functional connectivity in obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep breathing disorder that is often accompanied by changes in structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC). However, the current understanding of the interaction between SC and FC in OSA is still limited. METHODS: The aim of this study is to integrate complementary neuroimaging modalities into a unified framework using multi-layer network analysis methods and to reveal their complex interrelationships. We introduce a new graph metric called SC-FC bandwidth, which measures the throughput of SC mediating FC in a multi-lay

Smaller hypothalamic subregion with paraventricular nucleus in patients with panic disorder.

In panic disorder (PD), functional disturbance of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been considered. However, in neuroimaging studies of PD, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland are poorly studied. We investigated the volume of PD patients' hypothalamus and pituitary gland, enrolling 38 PD patients and 38 healthy controls. Severity of PD was mild to moderate according to the Panic Disorder Severity Scale, and the illness duration was relatively short (median = 2.8 years). The hypothalamus' gray matter was automatically extracted and segmented, whereas the pituitary gland was man

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness: A functional neuro-otologic disorder.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a functional neuro-otologic disorder that is the most frequent cause of chronic vestibular syndrome. The core vestibular symptoms include dizziness, unsteadiness, and non-spinning vertigo, which are exacerbated by an upright posture or walking, active or passive motion, and exposure to moving or complex visual stimuli. PPPD is mostly precipitated by acute or episodic vestibular diseases; however, its symptoms cannot be accounted for by its precipitants. PPPD is not a diagnosis of exclusion, but may coexist with other structural diseases. Thus,

The association between maternal immune activation and brain structure and function in human offspring: a systematic review.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) during pregnancy, as a result of infectious or inflammatory stimuli, has gained increasing attention for its potential role in adverse child neurodevelopment, with studies focusing on associations in children born preterm. This systematic review summarizes research on the link between several types of prenatal MIA and subsequent child structural and/or functional brain development outcomes. We identified 111 neuroimaging studies in five MIA areas: inflammatory biomarkers (n = 13), chorioamnionitis (n = 18), other types of infections (n = 18), human immunodefici

Vascular Reconstruction After Cannulation for Support With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Literature Review of Data in the Pediatric Population.

OBJECTIVES: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an invaluable life-support resource in the treatment of critically ill children. Traditionally, neck vascular cannulation requires ligation of the carotid artery and jugular vein. In this literature review, we identify rates of postoperative vessel patency, complications, and neurologic outcomes after vascular reconstruction following decannulation. DATA SOURCES: Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Review. STUDY SELECTION: No publication date limits. Inclusion criteria comprised of studies addressing repair of the carotid artery and jugular

Pre-treatment amygdala activation and habituation predict symptom change in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Trauma-focused psychotherapy approaches are the first-line treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, up to a third of patients remain symptomatic even after completion of the treatment. Predicting which patients will respond to a given treatment option would support personalized treatments and improve the efficiency of healthcare systems. Although previous neuroimaging studies have examined possible pre-treatment predictors of response to treatment, the findings have been somewhat inconsistent, and no other study has examined habituation to stimuli as a predictor. In

Striatal ups or downs? Neural correlates of monetary reward anticipation, cue reactivity and their interaction in alcohol use disorder and gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dysfunction of the striatum, a brain region part of the mesolimbic reward system, is a key characteristic of addictive disorders, but neuroimaging studies have reported conflicting findings. An integrative model of addiction points to the presence or absence of addiction-related cues as an explanation for hyper- or hypoactivation, respectively, of the striatum. METHODS: To test this model directly, we investigated striatal activation during monetary reward anticipation in the presence versus absence of addiction-related cues using functional MRI. Across two studies, we co

Visual cortex repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) reversing neurodevelopmental impairments in adolescents with major psychiatric disorders (MPDs): A cross-species translational study.

AIMS: Neurodevelopmental impairments are closely linked to the basis of adolescent major psychiatric disorders (MPDs). The visual cortex can regulate neuroplasticity throughout the brain during critical periods of neurodevelopment, which may provide a promising target for neuromodulation therapy. This cross-species translational study examined the effects of visual cortex repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on neurodevelopmental impairments in MPDs. METHODS: Visual cortex rTMS was performed in both adolescent methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) rats and patients with MPDs. Funct

Resting-state cerebral blood flow and functional connectivity abnormalities in depressed patients with childhood maltreatment: Potential biomarkers of vulnerability?

AIM: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is an important risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to explore the specific effect of CM on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and brain functional connectivity (FC) in MDD patients. METHODS: A total of 150 subjects were collected including 55 MDD patients with CM, 34 MDD patients without CM, 19 healthy controls (HC) with CM, and 42 HC without CM. All subjects completed MRI scans and neuropsychological tests. Two-way analysis of covariance was used to detect the main and interactive effects of disease and CM on CBF and FC across subjects.

Cerebellar Microstructural Abnormalities in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): a Systematic Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies.

Previous neuroimaging studies have suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with altered resting-state functional connectivity of the cerebellum. In this study, we aimed to describe the most significant and reproducible microstructural abnormalities and cerebellar changes associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) investigations. PubMed and EMBASE were searched for relevant studies using the PRISMA 2020 protocol. A total of 17 publications were chosen for data synthesis after screening titles and abstracts, full-text examina

Distinct neural signaling characteristics between fibromyalgia and provoked vestibulodynia revealed by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging in the brainstem and spinal cord.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia and provoked vestibulodynia are two chronic pain conditions that disproportionately affect women. The mechanisms underlying the pain in these conditions are still poorly understood, but there is speculation that both may be linked to altered central sensitization and autonomic regulation. Neuroimaging studies of these conditions focusing on the brainstem and spinal cord to explore changes in pain regulation and autonomic regulation are emerging, but none to date have directly compared pain and autonomic regulation in these conditions. This study compares groups of wo

Electroconvulsive therapy-induced volumetric brain changes converge on a common causal circuit in depression.

Neurostimulation is a mainstream treatment option for major depression. Neuromodulation techniques apply repetitive magnetic or electrical stimulation to some neural target but significantly differ in their invasiveness, spatial selectivity, mechanism of action, and efficacy. Despite these differences, recent analyses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS)-treated individuals converged on a common neural network that might have a causal role in treatment response. We set out to investigate if the neuronal underpinnings of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are

A case report of a patient with primary familial brain calcification with a PDGFRB genetic variant.

Fahr's disease, or primary familial brain calcification (PFBC), is a rare genetic neurologic disease characterized by abnormal calcification of the basal ganglia, subcortical white matter and cerebellum. Common clinical features include parkinsonism, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive decline. Genes implicated in Fahr's disease include PDGFB, PDGFRB, SLC20A2, XPR1, MYORG, and JAM2. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman who developed subacute cognitive and behavioral changes primarily affecting frontal-subcortical pathways and parkinsonism in association with extensive bilateral calc
