Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) now affects roughly one-quarter of the world's population, reflecting the global spread of obesity and insulin resistance. Reframing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as MAFLD emphasizes its metabolic roots and spotlights the gut-liver axis, where intestinal dysbiosis acts as a key driver of hepatic injury. Altered microbial communities disrupt epithelial integrity, promote bacterial translocation, and trigger endotoxin-mediated inflammation that accelerates steatosis, lipotoxicity, and fibrogenesis. Concurrent shifts in bile acid si

Furin, a calcium-dependent serine endoprotease of the proprotein convertase family, plays a pivotal role in both physiological homeostasis and viral pathogenesis. By cleaving polybasic motifs within viral glycoproteins, furin enables the maturation of structural proteins essential for viral entry, fusion, and replication. This mechanism has been documented across a broad spectrum of human pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, human immunodeficiency virus, human papilloma virus, hepatitis B virus, flaviviruses, herpesviruses, and paramyxoviruses, highlighting furin as a conserved mo

Essential Tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder and has a worldwide prevalence of 1%, including 5% of the population over 65 years old. It is characterized by an active, postural or kinetic tremor, primarily affecting the upper limbs, and is diagnosed based on clinical characteristics. The pathological mechanisms of ET, however, are mostly unknown. Moreover, despite its high heritability, genetic studies of ET genetics have yielded mixed results. Transcriptomics is a field that has the potential to reveal valuable insights about the processes and pathogenesis of ET thus providing an

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) that is characterized by demyelination, inflammation, and neurological damage. MS is the most common neurological disorder of young adults, negatively impacting their quality of life. Recent population-based estimates have determined that the prevalence of MS in the United States is growing and can be up to 3 times higher in females. While the etiology of MS is complex, involving genetics, immune dysregulation, and environmental triggers, the factors elevating MS risk in women are relatively unexplored. Hence

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and psoriasis (Ps) are common immune-mediated diseases that exhibit clinical comorbidity, possibly due to a common genetic structure. However, the exact mechanism remains unknown.
METHODS: The study population consisted of IBD and Ps genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. Genetic correlations were first evaluated. Then, the overall evaluation employed LD score regression (LDSC), while the local assessment utilized heritability estimation from summary statistics (HESS). Causality assessment was conducted through two-sample Mendelian randomizatio

Reducing antimicrobial use (AMU) in livestock may be one of the keys to limit the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial populations, including zoonotic pathogens. This study assessed the temporal association between AMU in livestock and AMR among Campylobacter isolates from human infections in the Netherlands between 2004 - 2020. Moreover, the associations between AMU and AMR in livestock and between AMR in livestock and AMR in human isolates were assessed. AMU and AMR data per antimicrobial class (tetracyclines, macrolides and fluoroquinolones) for Campylobacter jejuni and

Pathogens with affinity for the central nervous system (CNS) in children are diverse in their mechanisms of infecting and attacking the brain. Infections can reach the CNS via hematogenous routes, transneurally thereby avoiding the blood-brain barrier, and across mucosal or skin surfaces. Once transmission occurs, pathogens can wreak havoc both by direct action on host cells and via an intricate interplay between the protective and pathologic actions of the host's immune system. Pathogen prevalence varies depending on region, and susceptibility differs based on epidemiologic factors such as ag

Trematodes of the genus Ogmocotyle are intestinal flukes that can infect a variety of definitive hosts, resulting in significant economic losses worldwide. However, there are few studies on molecular data of these trematodes. In this study, the mitochondrial (mt) genome of Ogmocotyle ailuri isolated from red panda (Ailurus fulgens) was determined and compared with those from Pronocephalata to investigate the mt genome content, genetic distance, gene rearrangements and phylogeny. The complete mt genome of O. ailuri is a typical closed circular molecule of 14 642 base pairs, comprising 12 protei

Polyploidy is a significant evolutionary process in plants that involves the duplication of genomic content and has been recognized as a key mechanism driving plant diversification and adaptation. In natural populations, polyploids frequently arise from unreduced gametes, which subsequently fuse with reduced or unreduced gametes, resulting in triploid or tetraploid offspring, respectively. Cannabis sativa L. is a diploid species, but recent work using artificially induced polyploidy has demonstrated its potential advantages in an agricultural setting. Further, recent work has identified that s

JC polyomavirus (JCV) establishes an asymptomatic latent and/or persistent infection in most of the adult population. However, in immunocompromised individuals, JCV can cause a symptomatic infection of the brain, foremost progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). In the past 2 decades, there has been increasing concern among patients and the medical community because PML was observed as an adverse event in individuals treated with modern (selective) immune suppressive treatments for various immune-mediated diseases, especially multiple sclerosis. It became evident that this devastating

Fleas (Order Siphonaptera) are common blood-feeding ectoparasites, which have important economic significance. Limited mitochondrial genome information has impeded the study of flea biology, population genetics and phylogenetics. The Ctenophthalmus quadratus and Stenischia humilis complete mt genomes are described in this study. The samples were collected from Jianchuan, Yunnan plague foci, China. The mt genomes of C. quadratus and S. humilis were 15,938 bp and 15,617 bp, respectively. The gene arrangement of mt genome was consistent with that of other fleas, which include 22 tRNA genes, 13 pr
