This paper discusses the recommendations of the German Federal Health Office (Bundesgesundheitsamt) for increased iodine intake for the purpose of preventive medicine in view of the incidence of severe iodine deficiency in the Federal Republic of Germany. Special consideration is given to the district of Unterfranken. A new law (Gesundheitsreformgesetz) which came into force in 1989 in fact enables the German health insurance companies to meet the costs of iodine tablets for pregnant and lactating women, but they are not so far doing so, although it has been recommended by medical science.

The deficiency of life expectancy (DLE), calculated as the difference between the statistical life expectancy at a given age and the survival time with the tumor disease, is a useful measure to extend the concept of tumor malignancy. A "new pneumonia" is named legionnaires' disease after a gramnegative bacillus - Legionella pneumophila, unknown until 1977. Sofar it has been observed mostly in older male patients, rarely in children and never before in Germany. The legionnaires' disease in our patient, a five and half years old boy with cystic fibrosis caused a severe dyspnea and multilobular pulmonary densifications on the chest X-ray film. The diagnosis was verified by the rise of the titer in the indirect immune fluorescence test and the success of the therapy with erythromycin.

Esterase D phenotypes have been determined in 162 patients with psoriasis vulgaris, 181 patients with atopic diseases and 110 healthy controls. All these samples are from the area of Rheinland-Pfalz (West Germany). The two patient samples show somewhat higher frequencies of Es D 1 and lower of Es D 2-1 phenotypes as compared to controls. These differences are, however, statistically not significant. The Es D1 frequency in controls (0.9045) is in accordance with those reported from other European populations.
