This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of IL-5 in eosinophil migration and in the maintenance of eosinophilia in a guinea-pig model of visceral larva migrans syndrome. The results show that the infection of animals with Toxocara canis induced an early increase in serum IL-5 levels that might be essential for eosinophil differentiation and proliferation and for the development of eosinophilia. The present study was undertaken to investigate whether epidermal growth factor (EGF) could stimulate prostaglandin E2 release, and if so, by what mechanism EGF would exert such an effect in gastric mucosal cells. Pre-implantation-stage embryos from rats, mice, and guinea-pigs were transferred to a non-uterine site--the anterior chamber of the eye--of female recipients. The nasal bacteriology of children in two areas of the western Schrader Range was studied. One area, served by an aid post since 1976, was compared with the other, which received its first medical care in 1984. Significant differences in the amount of resistance to penicillin were found, but not in the direction expected. These anomalous findings are interpreted in light of the particular histories of the groups involved, suggesting the transmission of resistant strains through contact among children.

To study the beta-adrenoceptors in the single cells, we observed mechanical responses of the single cells to beta-adrenergic drugs and also tested the binding of a [3H]-labelled drug to the single cells. The influence of methyl isocyanate (MIC) inhalation on the gas exchange function of the lungs in guinea pigs was studied by measuring arterial blood gases, pH, and tracheal pressure during constant-volume, artificial ventilation with air or 100% O2 at 40 and 120 min after exposure. In order to study factors influencing osteogenesis after bone and bone marrow transplantation, we have caused guinea pigs to become scorbutic, and looked at the cell morphology at sites of bone formation. The effect of desferrioxamine on the reduction of tissue iron and the corresponding level of tissue ascorbic acid have been investigated in female guinea pigs on Vitamin C deficient diet.
