The performance of two different EM techniques applied for the detection of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in oral hairy leukoplakia (HL) was assessed, i.e. the conventional two-step method of negative staining (CNS) and negative staining after Airfuge enrichment (ANS). Scrape specimens from the lateral borders of tongue of 66 HIV-positive patients with or without HL, of 3 patients with infectious mononucleosis and of 10 HIV-negative patients were evaluated. While CNS resulted in virus detection only in 25% of clinically diagnosed HL cases, EBV was detected by ANS in 85% of clinically suspected case

Circadian variations in the number of circulating lymphocytes and their subpopulations have been observed in healthy subjects. These cyclic changes are characterized by a trough at 8:00 a.m. and a peak at midnight. The oncoretrovirus HTLV-I is the etiological agent of adult T cell leukemia (ATL) and tropical spastic paraparesis/HLTV-I associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). In contrast to the human lentiretroviruses, HIV-I and HIV-2, the causative agents of AIDS, HTLV-I is genetically very stable. We report here the molecular characterization of the envelope gene of an HTLV-I variant present in a TSP/HAM patient from Zaïre, raising the question of its relevance to disease or the ethnic and/or geographical origin of the patient.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are prevalent in many areas, including northern Tanzania, yet little is known about their interaction.
METHODS: We enrolled febrile inpatients at two hospitals in Moshi, Tanzania, over 1 year and performed HIV antibody testing and the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for leptospirosis. Confirmed leptospirosis was defined as ≥ four-fold rise in MAT titer between acute and convalescent serum samples, and probable leptospirosis was defined as any reciprocal MAT titer ≥ 800.

Patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus are living longer since the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy more than a decade ago - but at what cost? Highly active antiretroviral therapy has been associated with lipodystrophy and associated metabolic derangements such as dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance and diabetes. These complications are likely to contribute to an increased risk of premature and accelerated atherosclerosis with growing concern about potential cardiovascular consequences.

We report a lateral rectus muscle paralysis occurring 2 weeks after initiation of an interferon-α and ribavirin treatment in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) virus co-infection. This patient presented with horizontal diplopia that appeared rapidly and without any other neurological symptoms. Symptoms fully resolved with treatment interruption without any ophthalmological sequelae. This side effect is rare and has never been reported in a HIV-HCV co-infected patient.

Monte Carlo simulations using free energy perturbation theory have been used to guide the selection of bicyclic heterocycles in the lead optimization of non-nucleoside inhibitors of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (NNRTIs). Good correlation is found between predicted and observed activities. Six compounds are reported with EC50 values below 20 nM for protection of human MT-2 cells against the cytopathogenicity of HIV-1. Striking variation in activity is found and analyzed for an isomeric pyrrolopyrimidine and pyrrolopyrazine pair.
