Work-related upper limb disorders are one leading occupational diseases in many industrialized countries. The paper reviews the evidence of work-relatedness of the most common upper limb disorders (namely carpal tunnel syndrome, hand-wrist and shoulder tendinitis, trapezius myalgia, hand hammer syndrome). Attention is drawn to the difference in the number of reported cases in Italy and other countries, assuming, as an underlying cause, underreporting of such conditions in Italy.

In order to determine the extent to which nurses working in hospitals in the Toronto area experienced abuse, questionnaires were distributed to 2344 nurses working in either a large teaching hospital, a psychiatric hospital or a community hospital. Of the 603 nurses responding to the questionnaire, 199 (33%) had experienced abuse in their last five days at work. A total of 486 visual display terminal (VDT) workers were surveyed on their health status, working conditions, type A state, and depression state through questionnaires. They were also divided into three groups by self-assessment: technocentered (TC), technoanxious (TA), and neither (N). The study examined the work stresses of 107 women who were engaged in sewing machine operation in small garment manufacturing units. To estimate the level of radiation exposure of personnel handling diagnostic X-ray machines, the yield of chromosomal aberrations was analysed in peripheral blood lymphocyte cultures. These occupationally exposed individuals showed higher frequencies of dicentrics as well as acentrics than normal controls. Absorbed radiation doses calculated by extrapolating reference in vitro dose-response curve for dicentrics ranged between 0.13 and 0.17 Gy. The stigma associated with psychiatry is the most critical problem facing the profession, the author contends. He identifies the major sources of stigma as psychiatrists' internal conflicts over treatment ideologies and methods and the hostility between psychiatrists and other physicians that has led to disparagement of psychiatry as a medical specialty. Rubella history and antibody titre were determined for 457 medical, graduate, and physician assistant students. Eighteen per cent were estimated at risk for rubella. In order to evaluate the exposure of agricultural workers to dust-borne bacteria, microbiological examinations of the air were performed in grain storing and processing plants and in animal houses. The effectiveness of MSA charcoal tubes and those constructed by the USAF Environmental Health Laboratory were statistically compared. No significant differences were noted.
