OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this presentation is to review the role of sonography in evaluation of acute abdomen during pregnancy.
METHODS: Illustrative cases were collected from gravid patients who presented with signs and symptoms suspicious for acute abdomen and subsequently underwent sonography.

Renal candidiasis is a rare but well recognised complication of intensive care treatment in neonates. We report a problematic case with obstructing pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ) fungal balls that was refractory to standard measures of adequate nephrostomy drainage, pelvic irrigation with amphotericin B, and systemic antifungal treatment. We report a case of acute renal failure in a man with medically treated advanced prostate carcinoma. Imaging suggested renal tract obstruction as the cause; however, the patient failed to respond to treatment with dialysis and bilateral nephrostomy insertion. Postmortem examination revealed the renal failure to have been due to severe thrombotic microangiopathy.

We report on ultrasonographic prenatal diagnosis of a recurrent case of Johanson-Blizzard syndrome. The pregnancy was terminated at 21 weeks'. This observation highlights the great variability of the expression of this syndrome, including in the same family, and the necessity of collaborating with an experienced geneticist in all antenatal diagnosis of any complex of abnormalities.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Extrinsic ureteral obstruction caused by various malignancies often necessitates urinary diversion. The use of singl … eteral stents were tolerated by all patients, without significant discomfort. Marked improvement of hydronephrosis and alleviation of flank pain was noted in all patients. Three patients have died at 1 to 3 months. Renal function improved, with a mean decline in the serum creatinine concentration from 3.2 mg/dL to 1.48 mg/dL in the five patients tested.

Two HIV seropositive patients receiving sulfadiazine for presumed cerebral toxoplasmosis who developed an obstructive nephropathy are described. Ultrasound examination showed respectively a bilateral hydro-ureteronephrosis in one patient and unilateral hydro-ureteronephrosis in the other. The obstructive nephropathy resolved in both patients with alkalic hydration and discontinuation of the sulfadiazine.

We report a moderately mentally retarded 7-year-old male with a unique combination of clinical symptoms and signs: severe pre- and postnatal growth retardation, scaling skin and quadrispasticity, hypospadias grade 2 and hydro-uretero nephrosis, postaxial polydactyly type B on the right hand. Normal fibroblast enzyme activities of fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase and NADPH cytochrome C reductase were not consistent with the diagnosis of Sjögren-Larsson syndrome. Two thousand and forty-five pregnancies were registered during one calendar year, at the two hospitals in Dunedin. One thousand five hundred and ninety-four liveborn infants and 15 stillborn infants resulted from 1585 pregnancies. In 29 real-time ultrasonic studies of infants in the intensive care nursery, the technique either accurately diagnosed or led directly to the correct diagnosis in 27 (93%).
