Reduced nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) promoter activity in the Syrian hamster renders the animal functionally deficient in NOS2 activity and unable to control an intracellular pathogen.

Progressive disease in the hamster model of visceral leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania donovani, in contrast to infection in mice, mimics the progressive disease observed in untreated humans. During progressive infection in hamsters, there was a vigorous type 1 cellular immune response, which is typically associated with control of infection, suggesting that there was ineffective IFN-gamma-mediated macrophage activation. Indeed, at the site of infection, hamsters did not express NO synthase 2 (NOS2), which is the primary mechanism for control of infection in mice. Furthermore, in striking co

Tuberculosis and AIDS. Statement on AIDS and tuberculosis. Geneva, March 1989. Global Programme on AIDS and Tuberculosis Programme, World Health Organization, in collaboration with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.

In a number of developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, infection with both M. tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is highly prevalent. HIV infection results in an impairment of the immune system and entails a substantial risk of TB in those individuals who are or become infected with the tubercle bacillus. Because persons with both infections have an increased risk of developing clinical TB and further transmitting M. tuberculosis infection, some of these countries are facing, or will have to face, a rapid upsurge of the TB problem. The interaction between HIV

Analysis of the dynamics of transmission of human schistosomiasis in the highveld region of Zimbabwe. A review.

With the starting point in a comprehensive and integrated longitudinal study conducted by the Blair Research Laboratory from March 1982 to May 1984 in Bushu and Chiweshe communal areas, a review is presented of the dynamics of transmission of urinary (Schistosoma haematobium) and intestinal (S. mansoni) human schistosomiasis in the highveld region of Zimbabwe. The study comprised observations on snail-related aspects of transmission, on human water contact patterns, and on prevalence, intensity and incidence of infection in the human definitive host population. S. haematobium was found to be o

Influence of splenectomy on lethal effects of pneumococcal infection.

To determine whether the splenectomized host is more sensitive to the toxic effects of pneumococcal infection and whether the known clearance defect accounts for the early, increased mortality seen in postsplenectomy infection, the authors studied 8-week-old C57B1 mice. They were divided into two groups: seven control nonsplenectomized mice and six splenectomized mice. All animals were inoculated intravenously with 10(3) colony forming units of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Microaliquots of blood were drawn from the tail of all mice into sterile, heparinized, capillary tubes at 1, 4, 8 and 16 hour

Immune responses to congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the most common cause of viral infection acquired in utero. Even though the infection has been studied for several decades, immune determinants important for virus control and mechanisms of long-term sequelae caused by infection are still insufficiently characterized. Animal models of congenital HCMV infection provide unique opportunity to study various aspects of human disease. In this review, we summarize current knowledge on the role of immune system in congenital CMV infection, with emphasis on lessons learned from mouse model of congenital CMV infection.

Prevention of infection by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole plus amphotericin B in patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukaemia.

Fifty-two patients with nonlymphocytic leukaemia were studied during remission induction treatment in a randomized trial to ascertain the effect of prophylactic oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole on infection and fever rate. A decrease in the total number of acquired infections was found (16 infections in the group given trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole versus 31 in the control group, p less than 0.01). The number of patients without any infection in the trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole group was 13 compared to only three in the control group (p less than 0.01). Patients in the trimethoprim-sulfamet

Field experiments on live attenuated Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine for swine.

The efficacy of a live attenuated Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) vaccine was examined in swine under conditions where natural infection could occur. The pigs immunized with the vaccine produced antibodies within one week after vaccination, and the antibody was retained until the end of the experiment, i.e. 36 days. However, the antibody titers in this group were lower than that in control group naturally infected with JEV. No virus was isolated from the five vaccinated pigs, but virus was isolated from all four untreated control pigs after natural infection, i.e., viremia was detected in al

Reassessment of public awareness and prevention strategies for HIV and COVID-19 co-infections through epidemic modeling.

A co-infection model between HIV and COVID-19 that takes into account COVID-19 vaccination and public awareness is discussed in this article. Rigorous analysis of the model is conducted to establish the existence and local stability conditions of the single-infection models. We discover that when the corresponding reproduction number for COVID-19 and HIV exceeds one, the disease continues to exist in both single-infection models. Furthermore, HIV will always be eradicated if its reproduction number is less than one. Nevertheless, this does not apply to the single-infection COVID-19 model. Even

No evidence of acute Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in patients with Bell's palsy.

The cause of Bell's palsy remains unknown even though available evidence suggests that infection could be a factor. In recent studies, Chlamydia pneumoniae has been associated with neurologic diseases such as multiple sclerosis. In the present study, the association of C pneumoniae with Bell's palsy was studied with the use of serology and polymerase chain reaction to test tear fluid and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 21 patients with Bell's palsy and 21 control subjects. C pneumoniae DNA was detected from tear fluid samples in 1 patient with Bell's palsy and in 2 healthy control subj

The use of simple epidemiological models in the evaluation of disease control programmes: a case study of trachoma.

One of the problems in the quantitative evaluation of disease control programmes is the definition of a "critical" index reflecting the effect of control measures on the various aspects of a polymorphic disease. Trachoma is an example of a polymorphic disease in which its activity, intensity, severity, etc., are affected by control measures, including their timing. A simple epidemiological model indicated that the "force of infection" is a sufficient parameter to describe changes in the disease picture following a control programme. Use was made of two trachoma prevalence sample surveys in the

Chlorhexidine gluconate vs povidone-iodine for surgical site infection prevention: a systematic review and meta-analysis stratified by surgery type, wound classification, antiseptic formulation, and country income, with meta-regression.

BACKGROUND: The comparative effectiveness of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) vs povidone-iodine (PVI) for preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) remains unclear across surgical types and resource settings. This study compared CHG and PVI overall and within key clinical subgroups. METHODS: Five databases were searched through February 2025 for randomized controlled trials comparing CHG with PVI and reporting SSI outcomes. Random-effects models generated pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Twenty-nine randomized clinical trials involving 35,317 patients wer

Donning gloves before patient contact, with or without prior hand hygiene.

OBJECTIVE: Hand hygiene (HH) is a fundamental infection prevention measure in healthcare settings, playing a crucial role in reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Despite its importance, HH compliance remains suboptimal worldwide. A common error is omitting HH before donning gloves, specifically during WHO Moment 1 ("Before touching a patient"). This study investigates bacterial contamination associated with direct gloving and its potential implications for infection control. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial included nurses and doctors preparing to touch patients in the pedi…

Insights into the implementation of a whole genome sequencing report form (SRF) to reduce nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 in UK hospitals within an unfolding pandemic: A qualitative process evaluation using normalisation process theory.

BACKGROUND: Here we report on a process evaluation conducted as part of a large multisite non-randomised trial of the effectiveness of a novel whole genome sequence report form (SRF) to reduce nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 through changing infection prevention and control (IPC) behaviours during the COVID -19 pandemic. We detail how the SRF was implemented across a heterogeneous purposive sub-sample of hospital trial sites (n=5/14). METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews from diverse professional staff (N=39). Deductive and inductive thematic analysis initially explored participants' accounts of i
