The highest incidence of defective wound healing in all surgical disciplines is observed after urological operations. Wound infections occur in more than 8% of all urological patients. Defective wound healing appears in about 17% of unselected nephrectomy cases, rising to 50% when pyonephrosis is present. Simple adenomectomy is associated with wound infection rates of between 8 and 12% in preoperatively uninfected patients and up to 50% in patients with preoperative bacteriuria. Infectious mononucleosis was tentatively diagnosed in a patient who presented with a temperature of 39.5°C, red throat and enlarged nodes in the neck. He was given amoxycillin 250 mg tid and was admitted to hospital, where his clinical symptoms of diphtheria were investigated. Medication was switched to penicillin V 300 mg tid. On the fifth hospital day the laboratory reported a culture of a toxigenic strain of C. diphtheriae from an initial throat swab.On the same day, he developed an erythematous, highly pruritic maculopapular rash which was probably caused by the initial use of amoxycillin.

Chemiluminescence (CL) production by polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) was examined in 63 patients with bacterial infections and 63 healthy controls. Twenty Trichomonas-free ringdoves (Streptopelia risoria) were intubated with Trichomonas gallinae derived from pigeons (Columba livia). By 15 days post-intubation (DPI) five doves had T. gallinae-type lesions (Cankers) in the pregastric portion of the digestive system, and six doves had T. gallinae present without lesions. Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in lambs of a farm flock and an orphan-lamb rearing operation and in a hospitalized lamb. The clinical course was brief, with mild diarrhea and oocyst shedding during the diarrheic episode. Feces from the hospitalized lamb were used to reproduce the disease. Diarrhea and oocyst shedding occurred in inoculated lambs and their contact twin siblings but not in uninoculated noncontact control lambs or in inoculated ewes.

Between 1963 and 1972, 986 fungi were isolated from the nails of patients in Western Australia. Three clinical types of infections in both finger and toe nails were studied.
