Effects of Urtica dioica supplementation on blood lipids, hepatic enzymes and nitric oxide levels in type 2 diabetic patients: A double blind, randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Oxidative stress plays an important role in the development of diabetic complications including metabolic abnormality-induced diabetic micro-vascular and macro-vascular complications. Urtica dioica L. (U. dioica) has been traditionally used in Iranian medicine as an herbal remedy for hypoglycemic or due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of hydro-alcoholic extract of U. dioica on blood lipids, hepatic enzymes and nitric oxide levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 50 women with type 2 diabe…

Comparison of the acute response to meals enriched with cis- or trans-fatty acids on glucose and lipids in overweight individuals with differing FABP2 genotypes.

Trans-fatty acids have been implicated as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In addition, a polymorphism at codon 54 (Ala54Thr) in the fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP2) gene has been suggested to modify an interaction between dietary fat and insulin sensitivity. We examined the postprandial metabolic profiles after meals enriched with C18:1trans- relative to a similar meal with C18:1cis-fatty acid in individuals who were either FABP2 Ala54 homozygotes or Thr54 carriers. Moderately overweight men and women ate 2 breakfast test meals, separated by 1 week, each providing 40

Liposome adjuvants prepared from the total polar lipids of Haloferax volcanii, Planococcus spp. and Bacillus firmus differ in ability to elicit and sustain immune responses.

Immune stimulating activity was compared for lipid vesicles consisting of the total polar lipids of an archaeon Haloferax volcanii, and the eubacteria Planococcus spp. and Bacillus firmus. Each total polar lipid extract readily formed liposomes of similar size, within which the protein antigen ovalbumin was entrapped, with comparable loading and internalization. Subcutaneous immunization of mice resulted in anti-ovalbumin antibody titers for all adjuvants, with memory recall responses that were significantly greater with the archaeal lipid (H. volcanii versus Planococcus). More striking, induc…

Reduction in apolipoprotein-mediated removal of cellular lipids by immortalization of human fibroblasts and its reversion by cAMP: lack of effect with Tangier disease cells.

High density lipoprotein (HDL) phospholipids and apolipoproteins remove cellular lipids by two distinct mechanisms, but their relative contribution to reverse cholesterol transport is unknown. Whereas phospholipid-mediated cholesterol efflux from cultured cells reflects the activity of the HDL receptor SR-BI, apolipoprotein-mediated lipid removal is regulated in response to changes in cellular cholesterol content (positive) and cell proliferation rates (negative). Here we show that immortalization of human skin fibroblast lines with the papillomavirus E6/E7 oncogenes increased their proliferat…

Serum lipids, "double pre-beta lipoproteinemia," and distribution of the apo-very-low density (VLDL) lipoprotein peptides in hypothyroid patients before and after substitution therapy.

Thirty-six hypothyroid patients had total thyroidectomy for cancer. Thirty of them were studied before and during hormone replacement therapy, 1-1 .1 microgram/kg triiodothyronine (T3) per day. Mean treatment period was 90 days. During treatment mean serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), the ratio of TC to TG in very-low-density lipoprotein and the prevalence of the "double pre-beta VLDL lipoproteinemia" (Double-PBL) were significantly reduced as compared to the pretreatment values. The VLDL peptides were separated bysoelectric focusing (IEF) in polyacrylamide gel. The relative con

[Content of lipids and their fractions in erythrocyte membranes of rats with Guerin's carcinoma, A-avitaminosis and the effect of vitamin A in significant doses].

The content of lipids in rat erythrocyte membranes was studied with vitamin A deficiency, Guerin's carcinoma and with administration of significant doses of vitamin A. It is found that vitamin A deficiency decreases the content of phospholipid fractions: phosphatidyl ethanolamine, sphingomyelin, phosphatidyl serine. The content of phosphatidyl choline is unchanged. Under conditions of the experiment the content of cholesterol decreases. This dependence is lost when calculating per 1 g of protein. In erythrocytes of rats with Guerin's carcinoma the content of lipids increases. The character of …

Baseline lipid profile is associated with adverse outcomes in adults with coronary artery disease and obstructive sleep apnea despite lipid-lowering drugs and CPAP treatment: A secondary analysis of the RICCADSA cohort.

BACKGROUND: Reducing lipid levels is essential for preventing major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in management of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The first line treatment of OSA is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), however, its impact on the association between lipid profile and MACCEs is uncertain. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the RICCADSA cohort. In all, 224 revascularized CAD patients with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] ≥15 events) were allocated to CPAP, 103 to no-CPAP, and 86 patients had no O

Novel lipid emulsion for total parenteral nutrition based on 18-carbon n-3 fatty acids elicits a superior immunometabolic phenotype in a murine model compared with standard lipid emulsions.

BACKGROUND: While lipid emulsions in modern formulations for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) provide essential fatty acids and dense calories, they also promote inflammation and immunometabolic disruptions. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to develop a novel lipid emulsion for TPN use with superior immunometabolic actions compared with available standard lipid emulsions. METHODS: A novel lipid emulsion [Vegaven (VV)] containing 30% of 18-carbon n-3 fatty acids (α-linolenic acid and stearidonic acid) was developed for TPN (VV-TPN) and compared with TPN containing soybean oil-based lipid emulsion (IL-TPN

Hospital change to mixed lipid emulsion from soybean oil-based lipid emulsion for parenteral nutrition in hospitalized and critically ill adults improves outcomes: a pre-post-comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Early data suggest use of a mixed lipid emulsion (LE) with a soybean oil reduction strategy in parenteral nutrition (PN) may improve clinical outcomes. Duke University Hospital made a full switch to a Soybean oil/MCT/Olive/Fish Oil lipid (4-OLE) from pure soybean oil-based LE (Intralipid, Baxter Inc) in May 2017. Since 4-OLE has limited evidence related to its effects on clinical outcome parameters in US hospitals, evidence for clinical benefits of switching to 4-OLE is needed. Therefore, we examined the clinical utility of a hospital-wide switch to 4-OLE and its effect on patien

Effect of intensive versus moderate lipid-lowering therapy on epicardial adipose tissue in hyperlipidemic post-menopausal women: a substudy of the BELLES trial (Beyond Endorsed Lipid Lowering with EBT Scanning).

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the effect of intensive and moderate statin therapy on epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). BACKGROUND: EAT has been associated with coronary artery disease severity and outcome. It is currently unknown whether EAT volume changes over time when patients are exposed to statin therapy. METHODS: Subanalysis of a randomized study of atorvastatin 80 mg/day versus pravastatin 40 mg/day for 1 year in a clinical trial designed to assess the progression of coronary artery calcium (CAC) in hyperlipidemic post-menopausal women. Lipid hydroperoxides and free radical scavenging enzyme activities in preeclampsia and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) syndrome: no evidence for circulating primary products of lipid peroxidation.

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia is reportedly accompanied by increased plasma lipid peroxidation. However, to date the assays that have been applied to measure lipid peroxides have been relatively nonspecific. A highly specific high-performance lipid chromatographic-chemiluminescence technique was used here to measure lipid hydroperoxides in plasma and red blood cells of patients with preeclampsia and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: Lipid peroxidation products, both lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and

[Quantitative analysis of skin surface lipids using a sebumeter method. Random lipid levels on the skin surface during therapy with 13-cis-retinoic acid, minocycline hydrochloride and UVA rays].

The Sebumeter method used in this study for quantitative analysis of skin surface lipids differs from previous techniques in simple handling and quick practicability and is therefore helpful in the clinical routine. Sebumetrical measurements carried out on healthy persons revealed symmetrical distribution of skin surface lipids. The highest levels were found on the forehead; young people generally showed higher values than older persons. During therapy with 13-cis retinoic acid on acne patients for 6 months (0.5 mg/kg daily), we found reduction of the random level in the first month, particula…

Green tea prepared via the daily infusion method prevents non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by targeting intestinal lipid absorption, hepatic lipid metabolism and gut microbiota composition.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely linked to metabolic disorders and is characterized by excess fat accumulation in the liver. Although drinking green tea has been reported to have various health benefits, the impacts and mechanisms of green tea prepared by the daily infusion method on preventing NAFLD progression remain unclear. To address this issue, we first established a human diet-mimicking mouse model induced by a high-fat, high-cholesterol, high-refined sugar Western diet (WD). Then, we supplemented green tea extract (GTE) prepared with the traditional daily infusion m

Estrogen modulates Ca(2+)-independent lipid-stimulated kinase in the rabbit corpus luteum of pseudopregnancy. Identification of luteal estrogen-modulated lipid-stimulated kinase as protein kinase C delta.

Rabbit corpora lutea were tested for the presence of phosphorylative responses sensitive to estrogen. Luteal Ca(2+)-independent lipid-stimulated kinase activity was detected by phosphorylation of the endogenous substrate, p76. Estrogen treatment, by way of estradiol-17 beta implant, increased levels of the lipid-stimulated phosphoprotein 2-3-fold throughout pseudopregnancy. Midpseudopregnant rabbit luteal extracts were further evaluated to determine the identity of the lipid-stimulated kinase. Results of low pH-activated phosphorylation were consistent with the identification of p76 as an auto

Longitudinal profiling of host- and microbe-derived lipid metabolites in human breast milk.

OBJECTIVE: Breast milk contains lipid metabolites and is indispensable for the growth and development of neonates and infants. However, studies investigating interindividual variations in human breast milk composition and the longitudinal changes in its constituent lipid metabolites remain limited. The temporal and individual patterns of variations in these metabolites were characterized to provide a foundation for future research on precision nutrition in infants. STUDY DESIGN: Samples of human breast milk were collected shortly after birth and at 1 and 6 months postpartum, from participants
