Optimized workup of lymph nodes in regard to UICC classification of colorectal carcinoma.

AIMS: Treatment and outcomes in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) depend on the UICC classification, depth of invasion, and distant metastases. However, it is not clear whether an extensive workup of lymph nodes (LNs) is important for the adequate determination of metastases. Therefore, we compared the number of LNs and metastases obtained by a standard protocol (SP) and an extended protocol (EP) in two series with a total of 105 CRC cases and 2417 LNs. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the first series, the EP included complete stepwise sectioning of all LN-bearing paraffin blocks in each case, increasing th

Small and large-scale information collaborative unet for metastatic lymph node segmentation of multi-modal nasopharyngeal carcinoma MRI images.

BACKGROUND: An accurate assessment of metastatic lymph nodes (MLNs) in head and neck magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) is crucial in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) staging and treatment planning. As a fundamental step in computer-aided diagnosis systems, automated MLNs segmentation remains challenging due to three key issues: the small size, blurred margins and large localization variations among patients, which often lead to over- and under-segmentation. PURPOSE: To address these challenges, the Small- and Large-scale Information Collaborative Unet (SLSIC-Unet) has been proposed. This networ

Estimation and Correction of the Partial Volume Effect Using Personalized Phantoms of Lymph Node Metastases in Lutetium 177 SPECT/CT Dosimetry.

PURPOSE: This study aims to quantify and to correct for partial volume effect (PVE) in lymph node metastases of prostate cancer (PC) on Lu-177 SPECT images using 3D-printed phantoms of these structures to establish a ground truth. PROCEDURES: Ten individuals with clearly delineated, SPECT-positive lymph node metastases were retrospectively selected from a cohort of PC patients undergoing radioligand therapy (RLT). Manual segmentation of the metastases was performed on the CT component. The segmented lymph nodes were 3D-printed as patient-specific lymph node phantoms with volumes ranging from

Malignant lymph nodes of the head and neck: imaging pearls, pitfalls, and practical approach to reporting in the era of extranodal extension.

Accurate characterization and reporting of cervical lymph nodes is critical when evaluating head and neck malignancies, as findings directly impact staging, treatment planning, and prognosis. Knowledge of lymphatic drainage patterns predicts nodal spread of disease and conversely, may help in identifying primary malignancy. Variability in size criteria for an abnormal lymph node across literature makes reporting difficult when used in isolation; however, careful attention to morphologic changes improves diagnostic accuracy. FDG-PET imaging serves as a valuable complementary tool when available
