We describe the use of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) for the qualitative and quantitative determination of major alkaloids (i.e., thebaine, codeine, morphine, papavarine and narcotine) in gum opium involving the analysis of alkaloids without derivatization or purification. Immunohistochemical detection of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) has been suggested as a new approach for determining proliferative activity in paraffin-embedded tissue. Eight flavonoid C-glycosides, including three new analogues, have been isolated from leaf and root methanolic extracts of Petrorhagia velutina, a Mediterranean herbaceous plant. The antiproliferative activity against human hepatoblastoma cancer cell line HepG2 has been analyzed by the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) test. Isoorientin (4) significantly reduces the proliferation of HepG2 cells as determined by the complete conversion of the tetrazolium probe into formazan after 48 h of exposure.

Four new partially acylated tetrasaccharides of 11-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (1-4) were isolated from a methanolic extract of Ipomoea tyrianthina. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. The resin glycoside composition of I. tyrianthina varied with the location of growth in Mexico. Compounds 1-4 showed antimycobacterial activity, were cytotoxic against the KB cell line, and, in a mouse model, exhibited potentiation of hypnosis induced by pentobarbital, protected against seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole, and released GABA and glutamic acid.

A direct, efficient, and highly chemoselective synthesis of saturated alcohols through one-pot sequential 1,4- and 1,2-reduction of cyclic and acyclic conjugated ketones is reported. The saturated alcohols are obtained in very good yields using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent and a catalytic amount of copper(I) cyanide (CuCN) in ethanol as a green solvent. This nontoxic solvent significantly favors full 1,4-reduction, as opposed to methanol. Selectivity is further enhanced by the combination of two additives (a lithium salt or a sodium salt, such as NaI).

Extraction of lutein from raw macroalgae Monostroma nitidum was conducted using a simple method employing dimethyl ether (DME) as a solvent. DME extraction enabled omission of conventional drying and cell wall disruption steps, yielding 0.30 mg/g dry lutein from wet M. nitidum. The yield of extracted lutein was higher than that by chloroform-methanol extraction from freeze-dried and cell-disrupted M. nitidum. DME extraction provides a safe, eco-friendly approach that combines high yields of lutein with unheated drying of wet macroalgae in a single step.
