To demonstrate systolic and diastolic asynchrony in patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB), tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) of 4 different walls was performed in 27 normal controls, 29 patients with right ventricular pacing and normal left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF; pacing LBBB), and 35 patients with idiopathic LBBB. Patients with idiopathic LBBB were further classified into those with LVEF >50% and those with LVEF <35%. Asynchrony was calculated as the coefficient of variation of the time intervals from the QRS complex to the peak systolic velocity and to the peak of early di

This study analyses the residual femur motion of a single amputee within a transfemoral socket during a series of daily living activities. Two simultaneously transmitting, socket mounted transducers were connected to two ultrasound scanners. Displacement measurements of the ultrasound image of the femur were video recorded and measured on "Приостановлено" playback. Abduction/adduction and flexion/extension of the residual femur within the socket at any instant during these activities were estimated, knowing the relative positions of the two transducers and the position of the residual femur on the ult…

BACKGROUND: Resting wall motion abnormalities (WMA) in 2-dimensional echocardiography may be encountered in patients without previous myocardial infarction or known coronary artery disease (CAD) who are referred for stress testing. However, the functional significance of these abnormalities has not been evaluated by an independent technique. The goals of this study were to assess the value of resting WMA in the prediction of an ischemic response during dobutamine stress testing independent of other clinical characteristics in patients without known CAD, and to evaluate whether the presence of …

BACKGROUND: Although the presence of a functional border zone (FBZ), defined as the nonischemic but asynergic myocardium adjacent to the isc … ntractile dysfunction exists even in human hearts. The presence of an FBZ may limit the use of wall motion analysis in assessing the risk or ischemic area in patients with myocardial infarction. MCE appears to be a unique technique for assessing the risk or ischemic area.

Clinical value of resting reinjection of 1 mCi (37 MBq) of Tl after stress-delayed scan was assessed in comparison with 24 hr delayed scan and regional wall motion (RWM) in 37 patients with coronary artery disease. Of 101 segments with initial perfusion abnormality, concordant findings were observed after Tl reinjection in 67 segments (66%). But redistribution (RD) after Tl reinjection was observed in 19 of the 52 persistent defect (PD) segments (37%), and complete RD was observed 15 of the 43 segments (35%) where 3 hr scan showed incomplete RD. On the other hand, concordant findings were obse…

Asynchronous motion of left ventricular myocardium during the period of left ventricular isovolumic relaxation has often been observed in patients with coronary artery disease. Detection and quantitation of this abnormality with noninvasive nuclear tracer methods, however, have not yet been reported. Thus, functional images of regional left ventricular time to minimum counts (or volume), computed from gated blood pool image sequences, were analyzed to detect and quantitate myocardial asynchrony during this interval. The method was tested by comparing regional with global time to minimum counts…

Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings were compared in 44 patients with a first transmural infarction. Each patient was investigated on days 1, 2, 10, and 360. The electrocardiogram was classified according to QRS and ST segment changes. Local left ventricular function was determined from mean systolic wall velocity measurements by an M mode echocardiographic mapping technique in 10 of 16 segments suitable also for electrocardiographic evaluation. Mean systolic wall velocity was corrected for differences in anterior and inferior wall motion. Wall motion was normal in segments wit…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Understanding how the central nervous system generates muscle activation patterns for performing diverse movements remains a significant challenge in motor control. This study aims to evaluate the similarities and combinations of complex multiplanar upper limb movements in relation to the synergies of basic motions, using both experimental and computational approaches.
METHODS: Three healthy participants performed both proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) patterns and basic upper limb motions. Electromyography (EMG) and kinematic data were recorded simultaneous…

Precise quantification of the lumbar flexion-relaxation phenomenon can provide a better understanding of the load transfer between active and passive tissues and its implications for spinal stability. This study aimed to compare the precision of instantaneous angles using 1 versus 2 inertial motion sensors to determine the deactivation (electromyography [EMG]-off) and reactivation (EMG-on) of left and right erector spinae muscles during trunk flexion and extension. Electromyography and kinematic data were collected from 12 participants who performed 20 slow, controlled trunk flexion-extension …

Proteins move and deform to ensure their biological functions. Despite significant progress in protein structure prediction, approximating conformational ensembles under physiological conditions remains a fundamental open problem. This paper presents a novel perspective on the problem by directly targeting continuous compact representations of protein motions inferred from sparse experimental observations. We develop a task-specific loss function enforcing data symmetries, including scaling and permutation operations. Our method PETIMOT (Protein sEquence and sTructure-based Inference of MOTion…

The goal of this study was to determine if a robot-assisted exercise system could lead individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) through different joint ranges of motion in a fun and effective manner. Eleven individuals with PD participated. A novel robotic system placed a target at different places in space for participants to tap with their hand, foot or knee. The range of motion (ROM) was collected by inertial measurement units (APDM), and was extracted using a custom code (Matlab). ROM was dependent upon the exercise and joint of interest. Participants illustrated acceptable levels of fati…

BACKGROUND: The ligamentum flavum (LF) is a key component of the posterior tension band and contributes critically to lumbar segmental stability. Although laminotomy and flavectomy are widely performed during lumbar decompression, their isolated biomechanical effects remain incompletely characterized, particularly in controlled ex vivo models with validated similarity to human lumbar mechanics and procedure-specific experimental frameworks. This study investigated whether complete LF removal increases motion and decreases stiffness beyond the effects of laminotomy alone.
METHODS: Twenty-four …

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis involves capsular fibrosis and restricted shoulder movements, particularly external rotation and abduction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables assessment of capsular and ligamentous thickening. The relationship between capsular thickness, range of motion (ROM), and rotator cuff and biceps tendon pathologies remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the coracohumeral ligament and inferior glenohumeral capsule thickness, shoulder range of motion, and MRI-detected edema patterns in patients with adhesive capsulitis.
