Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the breast is a well-tolerated procedure used to evaluate palpable breast masses, has a reported mean specificity of 99%, and a reported sensitivity of 70-99%. The false positive rate varies from 0-0.4% in most larger series, with a reported false negative rate ranging from 0.7-22%; however, higher false negative rates have been reported in tumors under 2 cm in diameter. A sixteen-year old pregnant Dutch Warmblood mare was referred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine because of sluggishness since eight days. The main clinical features were depression, pale mucous membranes with petechiae, ventral oedema and fever. Haematological evaluation revealed severe anaemia (haematocrit 0.15 L.L.-1) and leukopenia (2.3 G.L-1 with 96% lymphocytes). There was no thrombocytopenia. The horse died following a hospitalisation period of six days. At necropsy a (multicentric) lymphosarcoma was found in the bone marrow with neoplastic infiltration of the kidneys.

We report here the outcome of surgical treatment for gastric cancer in 54 patients over 80 years of age presenting from 1967 to 1989. The mean observation interval of the postoperative period was 24 days. In most cases, preoperative examinations revealed pulmonary, renal or cardiac disturbances. The postoperative morbidity rate was 40.7%, most commonly as a result of pulmonary complications. This retrospective clinicopathologic study is to determine whether true vocal cord fixation produced by epidermoid carcinoma of larynx is an absolute contraindication of treatment by hemilaryngectomy. Serial sections of 19 hemilaryngectomy specimens were re-examined and clinical records of each patient reviewed. A 54 year old man presented with presyncopal symptoms. Echocardiography and subsequently computed tomography showed a mass in the posterior mitral annulus causing incompetence of the valve. At operation a lipoma was found which could not be resected. Mitral incompetence was the result of chordal rupture where the lipoma had engulfed the papillary muscle. The valve was replaced and the patient made an uneventful recovery. This case report shows a potential danger of an otherwise benign lesion.

The authors present a case of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis with inferior vena cava involvement. Two types of vena cava involvement are discussed: thrombus or nodes. The CT scan appears to be the best examination to preoperatively diagnose the type of invasion in order to be able to select the optimal treatment. However, these two types of involvement have a poor prognosis and surgery abstention may be justified. Chemotherapy may be useful in these cases.
