Physics-Informed Neural Network Design Toward Interpretable and Efficient Joint Moment Prediction.

Data-driven approaches are increasingly being adopted in human motion analysis research. Joint moment estimation plays a crucial role in providing valuable insights for robotic design and rehabilitation-related applications. Estimating joint moments using surface electromyography (sEMG) offers the advantages of being non-invasive and cost-effective. However, the end-to-end design of deep learning models for joint moment estimation faces several challenges, such as the requirement for large datasets, model generalizability, and interpretability. To address these challenges, this paper presents

A precision-constrained framework for evaluating noninvasive biomarkers in MASLD and beyond.

In patients with Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), accurate and low-cost non-invasive risk stratification remains a major unmet need. We developed a clinical records-based neural network integrating patient history, routine laboratory tests, and ultrasound imaging features. Here we show that in an internal test set (n = 209), the model achieved receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (ROC-AUC) values of 0.85 vs 0.82 (F ≥2), 0.90 vs 0.86 (F ≥3), 0.96 vs 0.89 (F  = 4) compared with Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4). To address limitations of ROC-AUC, we applied RP

Automated Deep Learning-Based Demyelination Load Segmentation in Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.

PURPOSE: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder characterized by progressive white matter demyelination. Quantification of demyelinated white matter on MRI-typically expressed as the demyelination load-serves as a key imaging biomarker of disease burden, enabling objective monitoring beyond visual rating scales. However, current semi-automated pipelines are limited by manual interaction, pediatric brain variability, and differences in MRI acquisition. This study aimed to develop and validate a self-configuring convolutional neural network (CNN) for automated se

Enhancing Upper Limb Exoskeletons Using Sensor-Based Deep Learning Torque Prediction and PID Control.

Upper limb assistive exoskeletons help stroke patients by assisting arm movement in impaired individuals. However, effective control of these systems to help stroke survivors is a complex task. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to enhance the control of upper limb assistive exoskeletons by using torque estimation and prediction in a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller loop to more optimally integrate the torque of the exoskeleton robot, which aims to eliminate system uncertainties. First, a model for torque estimation from Electromyography (EMG) signals and a predictive

BitterTranslate: A Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning-Based Framework for Mapping Bitter Taste Receptor Agonism.

Bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs) are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) expressed most notably on the tongue, but also in many extraoral tissues. TAS2R ligands are used for improving bitter-drug compliance, treating various illnesses, and studying the receptors' extraoral functions. Although machine learning, a promising drug discovery tool, can be used to predict TAS2R activators, obtaining high-quality features for training is time-intensive and reliant on specialized software. This work explores the potential of transformers (a neural network architecture for extracting features from sequen

Skeleton-Based Continuous Scale Parkinsonian Gait Score Estimation Using Omni-Dimensional Self-Attention Convolution Networks.

Gait abnormalities constitute a primary motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). Clinically, the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) is widely recognized as the standard to evaluate gait impairment in PD. Recent skeleton-based methods have sought to estimate MDS-UPDRS gait scores, but most approaches treat score prediction as a coarse classification task, limiting their ability to capture subtle, progressive gait changes over time. These methods also often neglect clinical prior knowledge and fail to model localized gait features, leading to unsatis

Optimized EEG and fMRI Biomarker Fusion Using Federated Learning for Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis.

Diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD) is particularly challenging due to the intricate and variable nature of its biomarkers, which span motor and non-motor symptoms, differ across individuals, and evolve over time. While machine learning has been used to automate this process, most studies focus on limited biomarkers due to dataset constraints. This study introduces a Federated Learning (FL) framework that integrates electroencephalography (EEG) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data for improved PD classification. Unlike traditional fusion-based studies integrat
