Prevalence and Risk Factors of Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study With Nutritional Assessment.

IntroductionSarcopenia, a progressive skeletal muscle disorder, is common among older adults and is associated with adverse outcomes including falls, fractures, cognitive decline, poor quality of life, and increased mortality. Malnutrition contributes to sarcopenia, and early screening is essential for prevention.MethodsThis cross-sectional study evaluated community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 years in Shanghai. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) consensus, using SARC-CalF, handgrip strength, and bioelectrical impedance analysis. Nutritional s

Manganese exposure assessment in formula-fed infants in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Proper nutrition is fundamental to the regular mental and physical development of infants, toddlers, and children. Overexposure to manganese (Mn) in infants has been correlated to various behavioral and neurological symptoms such as lower IQ, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and impairment in fine motor skills. The following study aims to evaluate exposure to Mn in formula-fed infants in Israel from birth to nine months of age. METHODS: Over 200 infant formulas of multiple brands were sampled by the Israeli National Food Service, as part of a routine monitoring of levels

A retrospective analysis of BMI/TP ratio and its predictive role in gestational hypertension outcomes.

Nutritional status and protein metabolism play key roles in maternal adaptation to pregnancy and may influence outcomes in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The body mass index to total protein (BMI/TP) ratio may capture the balance between adiposity and protein reserves. This retrospective study included 306 pregnant women diagnosed with gestational hypertension at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, China, between January 2022 and December 2023. Participants were stratified into high and low BMI/TP groups based on a threshold of 0.5. Clinical characteristics and bioche

Consequences of captivity: health effects of far East imprisonment in World War II.

Though medical consequences of war attract attention, the health consequences of the prisoner-of-war (POW) experience are poorly researched and appreciated. The imprisonment of Allied military personnel by the Japanese during the World War II provides an especially dramatic POW scenario in terms of deprivation, malnutrition and exposure to tropical diseases. Though predominantly British, these POWs also included troops from Australia, Holland and North America. Imprisonment took place in various locations in Southeast Asia and the Far East for a 3.5-year period between 1942 and 1945. Nutrition

Chronic constipation, atypical eating pattern, weight loss, and anxiety in a 19-year old youth.

A 19-year-old female was admitted to a children's hospital weighing 75 pounds. She lost 75 pounds over 2 years and did not menstruate for a year. Despite her dissatisfaction with her thin appearance and desire to weigh more, her inpatient treatment focused on "disordered eating." Adolescent medicine, nutrition, and gastroenterology specialists were consulted. A pediatric psychology consultation was initiated to address anxiety associated with eating as well as abnormal toileting behaviors. The patient reported that she had chronic constipation since the age 3 years with a large, hard, and pain

Nature of muscular change in osteomalacia: light- and electron-microscope observations.

Thirteen muscle biopsy specimens (mainly the gluteus maximus) from 12 patients with laboratory confirmation of osteomalacia and proximal muscle weakness in 10 were examined by light and electron microscopy. Light microscopy revealed mild diffuse non-specific atrophy of the muscle fibres in 10 cases, severe generalised atrophy in one and patchy group atrophy in one. There was no myopathic change in specimens from cases with either a nutritional aetiology, or a mixed aetiology. The former, mostly women gave a history of severe chronic malnutrition often accompanied by repeated pregnancies and pr

The School Breakfast Program strengthens household food security among low-income households with elementary school children.

The School Breakfast Program is an important component of the nutritional safety net and has been linked to positive changes in meal patterns and nutritional outcomes. By offering a breakfast, which for low-income children is available either at no cost or reduced price, the program also has the potential to increase household food security. This study examined the relationship between availability of the School Breakfast Program and household food security among low-income third-grade students by using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Survey-Kindergarten Cohort. The primary sample i

Extrauterine growth restriction in very-low-birthweight infants.

UNLABELLED: Postnatal growth failure of very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants may result from a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors, including inadequate nutrition, morbidities affecting nutrient requirements, endocrine abnormalities and treatments. Among VLBW infants, those small for gestational age (SGA) at birth and those with postnatal growth restriction at the time of discharge are at higher risk of later growth failure and long-term consequences. Nutritional intervention with an "aggressive nutrition" during the first weeks of life may be able to minimize the interrupt

Malnutrition and wasting, immunodepression, and chronic inflammation as independent predictors of survival in HIV-infected patients.

To analyze the long-term survival factors associated with HIV infection, a prospective follow-up study of 165 HIV-infected patients was performed after a clinical, nutritional, and biological evaluation. Survival rate could be determined in 129 patients after a follow-up of 42 mo before the use of protease inhibitors. After univariate analysis, multivariate analysis was performed with the Cox regression proportional-hazard model. Survival curves were calculated and compared with the Kaplan, Meier, and log-rank tests. The study also analyzed the factors associated with impaired nutritional stat

Bioelectrical impedance analysis in HIV-infected patients treated with triple antiretroviral treatment.

BACKGROUND: Triple antiretroviral treatment including protease inhibitors (PIs) delays the clinical progression of HIV infection and may thus reduce the risk of malnutrition. However, fat redistribution (lipodystrophy) was recognized recently as a metabolic side effect of PIs. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the effect of triple antiretroviral treatment on body composition and on the prevalence of malnutrition. DESIGN: Two cross-sectional studies, 1 in 1996 (t96; n = 247) and 1 in 1997 (t97; n = 266), were conducted in HIV-infected outpatients. Among patients who participated in both st

Body composition in patients treated with peritoneal dialysis.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a common complication in uremia and during maintenance dialysis. Several factors contribute to its development. Different modes of dialysis treatment may differ in their effects on nutritional status. METHODS: In order to analyse the nutritional consequences of peritoneal dialysis (PD), body composition analyses were performed in PD patients between February 1993 and March 1996. Body cell mass (BCM) was estimated from measurements of total body potassium (TBK) in a whole-body counter. Total body water (TBW) was determined by measurement of tritiated water. Body fat

Urinary retinol excretion and kidney function in children with shigellosis.

BACKGROUND: Acute infections, including diarrhea, are associated with an increased risk of vitamin A deficiency. Urinary retinol excretion during such infections may contribute to this risk. The mechanism accounting for urinary retinol loss has not been clearly defined. OBJECTIVE: This study attempted to determine whether urinary retinol loss in children with acute infection is associated with impaired kidney function, particularly impaired tubular protein reabsorption. DESIGN: Urinary retinol excretion and kidney function were examined in 66 hospitalized children 5 mo to 5 y of age with acu
