Cranial trauma following birth in term infants.

The purpose of this pictorial review is to demonstrate the imaging features of a range of cranial injuries associated with birth at term. Scalp and skull injuries include simple cephalhaematoma, osteomyelitis of the skull vault from infected cephalhaematoma, subgaleal haemorrhage and skull fracture. Intracranial injuries include extradural, subdural and subarachnoid haemorrhage, leptomeningeal cyst and brain infarct. Radiologists need to be aware of the range of cranial injuries following birth and their differentiating features.

Acute and chronic avulsive injuries.

Avulsive injuries are common traumatic lesions, especially in young athletes. They can be acute, resulting from excessive tensile forces, or chronic, due to overuse. Avulsion injuries can resemble osteomyelitis or neoplasm and, therefore, familiarity with the radiographic patterns as well as the different muscle attachments is helpful for the clinician to arrive at the correct diagnosis. This article discusses acute and chronic avulsive injuries in the pelvis, knee, elbow, shoulder, and foot.

[Actinomycosis of the tonsils with a pseudotumoral presentation: a clinical case].

A case of actinomycosis of the tonsils with a neoplasm-like clinical presentation is presented. Tonsillectomy confirmed the diagnosis and the patient's evolution was favorable after postoperative antibiotic therapy. The scant literature on cervicofacial actinomycosis is reviewed. These processes often are confused with neoplasms, as in our case, or with mandibular osteomyelitis. Treatment is surgery and prolonged antibiotic administration. Actinomycosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses, particularly when the biopsy is negative for carcinoma.

Nocardial endocarditis after aortic valve replacement. Reports of two cases.

Nocardial sepsis occurred after aortic valve replacement in two patients. A septic suture aneurysm of the aortotomy was resected and the prosthesis exchanged in one of them. The other received conservative treatment for sternal osteomyelitis and local mediastinitis. Clinical cure was followed by relapse and death from cerebral infarction, and necropsy revealed a septic suture aneurysm of the aortotomy. Radical surgical revision seems to be necessary for lasting cure in such infections.

Nuclear medicine applications for the diabetic foot.

Although no frequently described in the podiatric literature, nuclear medicine imaging may be of great assistance to the clinical podiatrist. This report reviews in detail the use of modern nuclear medicine approaches to the diagnosis and management of the diabetic foot. Nuclear medicine techniques are helpful in evaluating possible osteomyelitis, in determining appropriate amputation levels, and in predicting response to conservative ulcer management. Specific indications for bone, gallium, and perfusion imaging are described.

Intracranial complications of frontal sinusitis. A report of two cases.

Two cases are reported of intracranial complications of sinusitis, unusual nowadays. They were caused by osteomyelitis of the frontal bone following chronic frontal sinusitis. These cases were distinguished by complete destruction of the posterior wall of the sinus involved: in one of the cases there was an acute central neurological disturbance caused by a cerebral abscess; in the other patient, who came for consultation because of a Pott's Puffy tumour, a sizeable epidural abscess was found.

Neonatal septic "dislocation" of the hip: true dislocation or pathological epiphyseal separation?

The clinical and roentgenologic appearance of septic dislocation of the hip may be caused by either a true dislocation or a pathological epiphyseal separation due to osteomyelitis. Arthrography of the hip permits differentiation in the neonate. The significance of these two anatomical possibilites is discussed in terms of follow-up and results of neonatal infections about the hip, and a case of pathological epiphyseal separation at the hip diagnosed in the neonatal period by aspiration and arthrography and followed up for 3 years is presented.

An Uncommon Presentation of Polyarticular Septic Arthritis Following an Atraumatic Treadmill Run: A Case Report.

Septic arthritis is an urgent orthopedic condition typically caused by gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus. It poses a risk for complications like osteomyelitis, osteonecrosis, sepsis, and chronic pain. In this case report, we present a 33-year-old woman with a history of atopic dermatitis, obesity (body mass index 40 kg/m2), and hypertension, who presented to the emergency room with fever and right ankle pain following a jog on the treadmill. Initially, she was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, for which she was prescribed corticosteroids. Her condition rapidly progressed, a…

A Rare Case of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma With Ankle Involvement: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a diverse group of malignancies primarily originating in the lymphatic system. Musculoskeletal involvement, especially in joints such as the ankle, is exceedingly rare. Accurate diagnosis is often complicated by overlapping features with other conditions like osteomyelitis or malignancies. This case report aims to highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with joint-related NHL presentations. A 49-year-old man presented with a three-month history of left ankle pain. Initial imaging, including contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),…

Balanced enhancement of antibacterial activity and biocompatibility in chitosan-vancomycin 3D-printed scaffolds through mesoporous bioactive glass addition.

The rising incidence of osteomyelitis and growing challenges associated with conventional antibiotic therapy underscore an urgent need for novel therapeutic interventions. This study explores the development and characterization of chitosan/vancomycin/mesoporous bioactive glass (Chi-Van-MBG) 3D-printed scaffolds incorporating various MBG/Chi ratios, aimed at enhancing the viability and proliferation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) along with antibacterial effectiveness. Preliminary analyses, including the assessment of chemical composition, morphology, swelling, and degrad…

Skull bone lytic lesions: A rare form of multifocal skeletal tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a complex disease that can mimic numerous diseases involving different organ systems, making diagnosing TB challenging. Multifocal tubercular osteomyelitis is a rare form of skeletal TB that represents only a minority of all skeletal TB cases. Our patient, a 24-year-old immunocompetent male, complained of a low-grade fever that rises in the evening, scalp aches, right-sided chest pain, and non-inflammatory back pain with rest pain for six months. He had lost six kilograms over this period of illness. He was anemic, with mildly tender swelling in the right parietal region o…
