A single-group trial of end-stage patients with anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis: Levamisole in combination with Glucantime in field and laboratory models.

Currently, there is no satisfactory treatment modality available for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). The major objective of the present study was to explore the effect of immunomodulator-levamisole in combination with Glucantime in end-stage unresponsive patients with anthroponotic CL (ACL). Twenty end-stage unresponsive patients with ACL were identified for participation in this single-group trial study. Simultaneously, each patient was received a combination of levamisole pills along with Glucantime during the remedy course. Several in vitro complementary experiments were performed to evaluate

Effect of Aneurysm and Bicuspid Aortic Valve on Layer-Specific Ascending Aorta Mechanics.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have not examined the participation of intimal, medial, and adventitial layers in providing mechanical strength to the ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) wall compared with the nonaneurysmal aorta. In this study we compared the mechanical properties of intact wall and its layers among ATAAs and nonaneurysmal aortas, with explicit consideration of the effects of valve morphology; that is, bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) versus tricuspid aortic valve (TAV), and aortic quadrant. METHODS: Whole ATAAs were taken from patients undergoing elective repair and nonaneury

Contemporary transradial access practices: Results of the second international survey.

OBJECTIVES: To gain insight into current practice of transradial angiography and intervention in the United States and around the world. BACKGROUND: Transradial access (TRA) has grown worldwide. In a prior survey, there was significant practice variation and there was minimal US participation which limited the generalizability to US operators. METHODS: We used an internet-based survey software program to solicit input from practicing interventional cardiologists from the United States and around the world. US operators were compared with outside the United States (OUS) operators and responde

Paediatric and adult bronchiectasis: Monitoring, cross-infection, role of multidisciplinary teams and self-management plans.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease associated with structurally abnormal bronchi, clinically manifested by a persistent wet/productive cough, airway infections and recurrent exacerbations. Early identification and treatment of acute exacerbations is an integral part of monitoring and annual review, in both adults and children, to minimize further damage due to infection and inflammation. Common modalities used to monitor disease progression include clinical signs and symptoms, frequency of exacerbations and/or number of hospital admissions, lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s

Translation, Cross-cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Validation of the Korean-Language Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale (CRBS-K).

OBJECTIVE: To perform a translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale (CRBS) for use in Korea, followed by psychometric validation. The CRBS was developed to assess patients' perception of the degree to which patient, provider and health system-level barriers affect their cardiac rehabilitation (CR) participation. METHODS: The CRBS consists of 21 items (barriers to adherence) rated on a 5-point Likert scale. The first phase was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the CRBS to the Korean language. After back-translation, both versions were reviewed b

Illnesses in siblings of US patients with bipolar disorder relate to multigenerational family history and patients severity of illness.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder from the US have more early-onset illness and a greater familial loading for psychiatric problems than those from the Netherlands or Germany (abbreviated here as Europe). We hypothesized that these regional differences in illness burden would extend to the patients siblings. METHODS: Outpatients with bipolar disorder gave consent for participation in a treatment outcome network and for filling out detailed questionnaires. This included a family history of unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, suicide attempt, alcohol abuse/dependence, drug abuse/dep

Assessing Transplant Attitudes: Understanding Minority Men's Perspectives on the Multifarious Barriers to Organ Donation.

African Americans comprise 11 % of living organ donors, yet constitute 34 % of the kidney transplant waiting list. There are many barriers to organ donation among minorities that include decreased awareness of transplantation, cultural mistrust of the medical community, financial concerns, and fear of the transplant operation. This study investigates the societal misconceptions and demographic health factors that correlate with minority participation in organ and tissue donation. A 57 question Health and Wellness survey was designed to assess participants' demographic information, medical hist

Fluorescence Imaging After Indocyanine Green Injection for Detection of Peritoneal Metastases in Patients Undergoing Cytoreductive Surgery for Peritoneal Carcinomatosis From Colorectal Cancer: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of fluorescence imaging (FI) using an intraoperative injection of free indocyanine green (ICG) in the detection of peritoneal metastases (PM) due to colorectal cancer (CRC). BACKGROUND: A large proportion of patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy will have local recurrence. This is, in part, related to the presence of small undetected nodules in the peritoneal cavity. Near-infrared FI-guided surgery has provided new opportunities for detection of nonvisible lesions during cancer surgery.

Anterograde conduction to the His bundle during right ventricular overdrive pacing distinguishes septal pathway atrioventricular reentry from atypical atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing orthodromic atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia (ORT) using a retrograde septal accessory pathway (AP) from atypical atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) may be challenging. Specifically, excluding the presence and participation of an AP may require multiple diagnostic maneuvers. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the relative value of commonly used right ventricular (RV) pacing maneuvers, including identification of anterograde His-bundle activation with entrainment, to differentiate ORT using a retrograde septal AP from atypi

Predictive factors associated with failure of nonoperative treatment of superior labrum anterior-posterior tears.

BACKGROUND: Uncertainty remains in the natural course of superior labrum anterior-posterior (SLAP) tears treated conservatively with rehabilitation and activity modification. Our purpose was to evaluate clinical outcomes after nonoperative treatment of type II SLAP tear in young active patients and to identify factors related to negative outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 63 patients who initially underwent nonoperative treatment for isolated type II SLAP tear. Assessments were made at baseline and at 6 months, and telephone survey was used to evaluate the final outcome. All inclu

Nasometry, videofluoroscopy, and the speech pathologist's evaluation and treatment.

The speech-language pathologist (SLP) plays an important role in the assessment and management of children with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). The SLP assesses speech sound production and oral nasal resonance and identifies the characteristics of nasal air emission to guide the clinical and surgical management of VPI. Clinical resonance evaluations typically include an oral motor exam, identification of nasal air emission, and analysis of the speech sound repertoire. Additional elements include perceptual assessment of intra-oral air pressure, the degree of hypernasality, and vocal loudne
