Can a digital intervention 'Momentum' improve social functioning and transdiagnostic symptoms for Australian youth at ultrahigh risk for psychosis? Protocol for a superiority randomised controlled trial comparing treatment as usual with and without Momentum.

INTRODUCTION: Existing psychological and pharmacological interventions for young people at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis have shown benefit in at least delaying the transition to psychosis, but they have limited benefit for comorbid disorders or social dysfunction, which are prominent for those at UHR. We developed a moderated online social therapy platform (named Momentum) including: (1) transdiagnostic therapeutic interventions targeting social functioning, depression, generalised anxiety and social anxiety; (2) a moderated, peer-led online community and (3) specialised human support f

Meeting the Needs of Emerging Adults With Type 1 Diabetes Living in a Rural Area With Mobile Health Interventions: Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging adults (EAs; age 18-30 years) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have more challenges with diabetes management and glycemic control than other age groups. Living in a rural community introduces additional unique diabetes care challenges due to limited access to specialty care and ancillary support services. Yet, few interventions have been developed to improve diabetes management in rural-dwelling EAs with T1D. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the diabetes management experiences of older adolescents and EAs (age 16-25 years) with T1D living in a rural area and to assess

Factors influencing speech pathology practice in dysphagia after stroke: A qualitative focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia affects over half of adults after stroke. Dysphagia rehabilitation aims to improve swallowing and reduce negative outcomes for these adults. However, significant variability exists in dysphagia rehabilitation. Research is needed to explore the underlying clinician-specific and workplace factors that contribute to variability in dysphagia rehabilitation after stroke. AIM: To explore factors influencing speech pathology practice in dysphagia rehabilitation after stroke. METHODS & PROCEDURES: We used a phenomenological approach with an interpretivist perspective. Twenty sp

Health of 2-year-old children born after vitrified oocyte donation in comparison with peers born after fresh oocyte donation.

STUDY QUESTION: Does oocyte vitrification adversely affect the health of 2-year-old children compared with peers born after use of fresh oocytes in a donation programme? SUMMARY ANSWER: The growth and health of 2-year-old children born after oocyte vitrification are similar to those of peers born after use of fresh oocytes. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Although oocyte vitrification is a well-established procedure in ART, the evidence on its safety for offspring is limited. Currently, no disadvantageous effects of oocyte vitrification have been shown in terms of obstetric and neonatal outcome. Howe

A Couples-Based Intervention (Ghya Bharari Ekatra) for the Primary Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence in India: Pilot Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: The high global prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and its association with poor physical and mental health underscore the need for effective primary prevention. We previously developed Ghya Bharari Ekatra (GBE), a couples-based primary prevention intervention for IPV among newly married couples residing in slum communities in Pune, India. OBJECTIVE: Through this pilot study, we aimed to explore the acceptance, safety, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of GBE. METHODS: Between January and May 2018, we enrolled and assigned 20 couples to receive GBE plus information

Drivers of Taxonomic Bias in Ecology and Evolution: Insights From Ethologists and Behavioural Ecologists.

Taxonomic bias, that is, the disproportionate attention given to some taxa relative to their diversity, continues to hinder innovation and the pursuit of generality in ecology and evolution. Yet, the factors shaping ecologists' and evolutionary biologists' choices of study organisms mostly remain a mystery. We propose a framework explaining researchers' taxonomic choices along three major axes, supported by evidence from a preregistered survey of 868 researchers' experiences. First, rational considerations, such as logistical ease and societal relevance, were associated with the choice of rese

Longitudinal study of changing inspirations and aspirations of first-year students before and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

This longitudinal study investigates the evolving inspirations and aspirations of first-year undergraduate students in Biosciences and Chemistry at Sheffield Hallam University over a five-year period (2018-2023). Students submitted reflective essays during Welcome Week, detailing their motivations for choosing their course and future career goals. Thematic analysis identified six recurring themes: named career, work experience, further study, experience of disease, outreach experience and Covid-19. While most themes remained stable over time, Covid-19 emerged in 2020 and peaked in 2021. Bivari

Children's and adolescents' anticipated disclosures to mothers about harming and being harmed by a friend.

This study examined children and adolescents' anticipated disclosure to their mothers regarding hypothetical situations of harming and being harmed by a friend, along with their expectations about their mothers' responses. A total of 196 participants (92 boys, 104 girls) across three age groups (Mages = 8.57, 12.47, 17.58 years, respectively) considered two hypothetical scenarios in which they were described as harming or being harmed by a friend (order counterbalanced). Overall, participants were more likely to expect (a) disclosing and (b) receiving more supportive responses and fewer negati

Understanding the intersection of gender and cognitive ability on interpersonal outcomes: A multistudy investigation.

Drawing from social role theory and ideas tied to the implied communality deficit, we develop a theoretical model explicating that higher cognitive ability women-but not men-are potentially more likely to experience interpersonal detriments. Specifically, we theorize that as an agentic competence attribute, higher cognitive ability is viewed as a gender norm violation for women (but not for men), contributing to perceptions of both heightened interpersonal hostility and lowered communality by their peers; these perceptions, in turn, are theorized to be associated with greater levels of victimi

Long-term respiratory outcomes of infants born moderate to late preterm.

Moderate to late preterm birth, defined as birth between 32 to <37 weeks' gestation, accounts for over 80% of all preterm births globally. Although long-term respiratory outcomes following very and extremely preterm birth are well characterised, the lifelong respiratory consequences of moderate to late preterm birth have received comparatively less attention. Infants born moderate to late preterm experience increased neonatal respiratory morbidity, greater susceptibility to early-life lower respiratory tract infection, and elevated rates of wheeze and physician-diagnosed asthma throughout chil

Assessing the risk of venous thromboembolism in trans masculine persons on gender-affirming hormone therapy: A literature review.

OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to synthesize recent data on venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk in the context of masculinizing hormone therapy with testosterone. METHODS: An electronic search was performed in MEDLINE/PubMed without date restrictions. Eligible articles were peer-reviewed observational and interventional studies and had to be written in English. Results are presented by theme of analysis. RESULTS: Most recent large-scale studies investigating trans masculine populations have not found a statistically significant change in the risk of VTE. However, most of the available data relat

Current clinical practices of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies makes physicians face demanding and new-fangled problems, as there are many uncertain aspects considering the outcomes of affected patients' prognoses. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are associated with favorable long-term outcomes in carefully selected patients with peritoneal metastases (PM). We aim to summarize the current results about the initial malignancies and their peritoneal spreads. The current literature has been scrutinized, and studies between 2016 and 2022 were included wherein long-t

Stubborn Families: Logics of Care of a Family Member with Borderline Personality Disorder.

This study conducted in-depth, largely unstructured interviews with 31 involved family members in a metropolitan area of the United States (US) Midwest on their experiences of BPD in a close relative. Narrative analysis employing concepts from anthropology (the logic of care and family assemblage) was used to examine the nature and quality of care practices and identify human, environmental, and cultural supports needed for family recovery. Findings indicate that these US family caregivers provided intensive and extensive care over the long term. They acted in situations of risk to their relat

Care burden and support needs of caregivers of infants and children with CHDs and dysphagia.

Dysphagia is common in children with CHDs, resulting in multiple stressors for their caregivers including having a child with a serious medical condition and coping with their child's feeding needs. However, relatively little is known about caregivers' perceptions and experiences of the burden of care and support needs for their child with a CHD and dysphagia in low-middle income contexts. This qualitative study investigated the burden of care and support needs identified by parents of children with CHDs and dysphagia in a single centre in South Africa. Semi-structured interviews took place in

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Psychosocial Well-being and Adaptation in Children and Adolescents with Asperger's Syndrome.

Mental health could worsen in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, their parents could be more at risk for an increase in anxiety and depression symptomatology. This study aims to understand the adaptation and the psychosocial well-being in a sample of 16 males aged 10-21 years old with Asperger's syndrome after the quarantine for COVID-19 when they return to school and partially to their activities in September 2020. The adopted approach is multi-informant with a battery of questionnaires on psychological health and adaptation given

Are Older People Living Alone Socially Isolated? A Qualitative Study of Their Experiences.

This article discusses the experiences of social isolation among older people living alone. The current state of knowledge suggests that they are at a higher risk of social isolation which, in turn, can compromise their health and well-being to varying degrees. Yet, few qualitative studies have tried to understand the subjective experience of living alone and the ways it can impact older people's relationships. The data presented here are based on 43 individual interviews with men and women aged 65 to 93 living alone in the Montreal area (Canada), and group discussions with 120 actors involved

Daily versus three-times-weekly azithromycin in Chinese patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis: protocol for a prospective, open-label and randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB) brought a heavy healthcare burden worldwide. Macrolide maintenance therapy was proved to be helpful in reducing exacerbation of NCFB. However, the optimal dosing regimens of macrolides have not been determined, and its efficacy in Chinese NCFB population has not been validated. This protocol describes a head-to-head clinical trial designed to compare the efficacy of two dosing regimens of azithromycin in Chinese NCFB population. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This prospective, open-label and randomised controlled trial will be conducted in the Fi

A "pretty normal" life: a qualitative study exploring young people's experience of life with bronchiectasis.

PURPOSE: Bronchiectasis is a chronic respiratory disease that impacts significantly on quality of life for those who have it. There is a paucity of literature exploring the perspectives of children and young people. The aim of this study was to examine the day-to-day life experience of a group of young people with bronchiectasis. METHOD: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews explored fifteen young people's perspectives of life with bronchiectasis. Key themes were identified using an inductive iterative approach through constant comparative analysis guided by Thorne's interpreti
