A total of 75 coronary patients were examined during nocturnal sleep. Thirty-eight of them had periodic apnoe or hypopnoe breathing which occurred more commonly during light sleep in patients with myocardial contractile dysfunction, compromised cerebral circulation and overweight. A nonhuman primate on a periodic ethanol dosing schedule should provide a model of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) most relevant to the majority of pregnant women who are "social drinkers" and can exercise reasonable control over their ethanol intake. In this pilot study, four pregnant pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) received ethanol once a week from 40 days' gestation. The report is based on 1,165 medical inpatients seen by the consultant psychiatrist within a 3-year period. During the last year evaluated for this study psychiatric consultation was requested for 2.8% of the total non-psychiatric hospital admissions. EMG and nerve conduction studies have limitations and require particular consideration in children. The indications and the main results are considered from the study of 1624 EMGs in 1385 children under 15 years old seen over a period of 3 years. Classification of cases was based on clinical criteria.
