Structural MRI, electrophysiology, and functional MRI (fMRI) elucidate different aspects of damage and repair in demyelinating diseases. We combined them to investigate why patients with optic neuritis (ON) exhibit a wide variation in severity of acute visual loss, with the following objectives: (1) To determine how structural and electrophysiological changes in the anterior and posterior visual pathways contribute to acute visual loss. (2) To combine these data with fMRI, to investigate whether cortical activity modulates visual acuity. The visual system of 28 patients with acute unilateral O

Previous research has suggested that three-dimensional (3D) structure-from-motion (SFM) perception in humans involves several motion-sensitive occipital and parietal brain areas. By contrast, SFM perception in nonhuman primates seems to involve the temporal lobe including areas MT, MST and FST. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging study compared several motion-sensitive regions of interest including the superior temporal sulcus (STS) while human observers viewed horizontally moving dots that defined either a 3D corrugated surface or a 3D random volume. Low-level stimulus features

Our knowledge on the development of the affective and cognitive circuitries that underlie affect regulation is still limited. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study examined whether there is more efficient prefrontal modulation of affective circuits with development. Ten adolescents (mean age 14 +/- 2 years) and 10 adults (mean age 30 +/- 6 years) underwent two scanning conditions that required different levels of cognitive control over face emotion processing. A 'directed' emotion processing condition required judgment of facial expressions. An 'incidental' emotion processing

OBJECTIVE: Here we tested the hypothesis that in normal weight subjects, attentional cortical responses to the enlargement of faces are related to features of body weight, as a basis for future studies on the role of neurocognitive mechanisms in eating and weight disorders.
METHODS: Electroencephalographic data were recorded in 15 normal weight adults during a visual "oddball" paradigm. The subjects were given frequent (70%) and rare (30%) stimuli depicting faces (FACE), food (FOOD), and landscapes (CONTROL). The task was to click the mouse after the rare stimuli. These stimuli depicted the s

Early in development, the cat primary visual cortex (V1) is dominated by inputs driven by the contralateral eye. The pattern then reorganizes into ocular dominance columns that are roughly equally distributed between inputs serving the two eyes. This reorganization does not occur if the eyes are kept closed. The mechanism of this equalization is unknown. It has been argued that it is unlikely to involve Hebbian activity-dependent learning rules, on the assumption that these would favor an initially dominant eye. The reorganization occurs at the onset of the critical period (CP) for monocular d

OBJECTIVE: A great deal of human activity is involved in anticipating the future, from predicting the next influenza strain to the expectations that underlie the placebo effect. Most models of anticipation take for granted that events unfold in a unidirectional flow of time, from past to future. Two experiments were conducted to test this assumption.
DESIGN: Pupillary dilation, spontaneous blinking, and eye movements were tracked before, during, and after participants viewed photographs with varying degrees of emotional affect. Photos were selected uniformly at random with replacement. Experi

Albino mammals exhibit a range of visual deficits including disrupted hemispheric pathways, an underdeveloped central retina, and nystagmus. Recently, it has been reported that albino animals also show deficits in the processing of visual motion, exhibiting higher motion coherence thresholds (MCTs; the proportion of coherently moving elements within a field of randomly moving distracters required to reliably report direction). Here we compare MCTs-collected from human observers with albinism-with an equivalent noise analysis of their fine-direction discrimination and report that their loss in

The binocular depth inversion illusion test (BDII) represents a sensitive measure of impaired visual information processing that manifests in various experimental and naturally occurring psychotic states. This study explores impairment of visual processing in different major psychiatric diseases investigating 313 subjects, suffering of either an initial prodromal state of psychosis (IPS) or a first-episode, antipsychotic-naïve paranoid schizophrenia (SZ-N) as well as short-term antipsychotically treated schizophrenia (SZ-T), major depression (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), dementia (D), and heal

Ninety-two children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), a genetic disorder caused by a microdeletion of chromosome 22q11.2 and an age, race, and gender-ratio comparable sample of 59 control participants were included in the project. Participants received an MRI as well as a comprehensive neuropsychological battery; the primary outcome measure in the current report is the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). Children with VCFS performed less well on the ROCF and have lower whole brain volume compared to controls. After controlling for whole brain volume differences, children with VCFS have

The parietal regions implicated in spatially selective attention differ between patient lesion studies and functional imaging of the intact brain. We aimed to resolve this discordance. In a voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping study in 20 ischemic stroke patients, we applied the same cognitive subtraction approach as in 23 healthy volunteers who underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using identical tasks and stimuli. An instructive central cue directed attention to one visual quadrant. After a brief delay, a grating appeared in that quadrant together with an irrelevant grating i

Converging evidence suggests that patients with panic disorder have a metabolic disturbance that may influence the regulation of arousal systems and confer vulnerability to 'spontaneous' panic attacks. The consistent finding of elevated brain lactate responses to various metabolic challenges in panic disorder appears to support this model, although the mechanism of this effect is not understood. Several mechanisms have been proposed to account for elevated brain lactate responses in panic disorder, including (1) brain hypoxia due to excessive cerebral vasoconstriction, and (2) a metabolic dist

In this study we examined reactions to 3 news events (September 11 terrorist attacks, Summer 2002 kidnappings, and Fall 2002 sniper shootings) in a national, representative sample of children aged 2 to 17. Media exposure was related to increased worry and changes in activities, with September 11 creating the most concern and shootings the least. More signs of stress were apparent among 10- to 13-year-olds, minority children and those of low socioeconomic status, children with prior adversities, and children who lived in close geographical proximity. Girls aged 10 to 17 had more reaction to the

Polymicrogyrias (PMG) are cortical malformations resulting from developmental abnormalities. In animal models PMG has been associated with abnormal anatomy, function, and organization. The purpose of this study was to describe the function and organization of human polymicrogyric cortex using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Three patients with epilepsy and bilateral parasagittal occipital polymicrogyri were studied. They all had normal vision as tested by Humphrey visual field perimetry. The functional organization of the visual cortex was reconstructed using phase-encoded retinotopic m

Cognitive deficits in Huntington's disease (HD) have been attributed to neuronal degeneration within the striatum; however, postmortem and structural imaging studies have revealed more widespread morphological changes. To examine the impact of HD-related changes in regions outside the striatum, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in HD to examine brain activation patterns using a Simon task that required a button press response to either congruent or incongruent arrow stimuli. Twenty mild to moderate stage HD patients and 17 healthy controls were scanned using a 3T GE scanner.

Neurofunctional mechanisms underlying cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are still not clearly understood. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study focused on changes in brain activation as a result of one-session CBT in patients suffering from spider phobia. Twenty-six female spider phobics and 25 non-phobic subjects were presented with spider pictures, generally disgust-inducing, generally fear-inducing and affectively neutral scenes in an initial fMRI session. Afterwards, the patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy group (TG) or a waiting list group (WG). The scans

PURPOSE: To study the electroretinographic (ERG) findings in patients with autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA) with OPA1 mutations.
METHODS: Eight ADOA patients (age range, 24-55 years; mean, 41 years) with OPA1 mutations were studied. In addition to routine ophthalmological tests, full-field ERGs including the rod response, mixed rod-cone response, oscillatory potentials (OPs), single-flash cone response, and photopic negative response (PhNR) were recorded and compared with those from 25 age-matched controls. The correlation between the ERG data and averaged retinal nerve fiber layer (RN

Previous studies found normal or even superior performance of autistic patients on visuospatial tasks requiring local search, like the Embedded Figures Task (EFT). A well-known interpretation of this is "weak central coherence", i.e. autistic patients may show a reduced general ability to process information in its context and may therefore have a tendency to favour local over global aspects of information processing. An alternative view is that the local processing advantage in the EFT may result from a relative amplification of early perceptual processes which boosts processing of local stim
