Activation of Tryptophan and Phenylalanine Catabolism in the Remission Phase of Allergic Contact Dermatitis: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an inflammatory skin disease caused by repeated skin exposure to contact allergens. The severity and duration of this disease are associated with many different factors. Some of these factors may represent markers for monitoring disease activity and the individual response to an intervention. METHODS: We used a targeted metabolomics approach to find such factors in the serum of individuals with ACD. Metabolomics profiles were examined and compared in the acute phase of the disease and also in the absence of disease activity. RESULTS: Our study

Functional assessment of cerebral artery stenosis: A pilot study based on computational fluid dynamics.

The fractional pressure ratio is introduced to quantitatively assess the hemodynamic significance of severe intracranial stenosis. A computational fluid dynamics-based method is proposed to non-invasively compute the FPRCFD and compared against fractional pressure ratio measured by an invasive technique. Eleven patients with severe intracranial stenosis considered for endovascular intervention were recruited and an invasive procedure was performed to measure the distal and the aortic pressure ( Pd and Pa). The fractional pressure ratio was calculated as [Formula: see text]. The computed tomogr

Randomized Pilot Trial of Two Modified Endotracheal Tubes To Prevent Ventilator-associated Pneumonia.

RATIONALE: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a prevalent and costly nosocomial infection related to instrumentation of the airway with an endotracheal tube (ETT), enabling microaspiration of contaminated secretions. Modification of the ETT design to reduce microaspiration and/or biofilm formation may play an important role in VAP prevention. However, there is insufficient evidence to provide strong recommendations regarding the use of modified ETT and unaddressed safety concerns. OBJECTIVES: We performed a pilot randomized controlled trial comparing two modified ETTs designed specifica

Role of Virechana and Ashwatha Phala Churna in the management of Ksheena Shukra (oligozoospermia): A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is the inability of a sexually active, noncontracepting couple to achieve spontaneous pregnancy in 1 year. Low sperm count (oligozoospermia) is one of the main causes of male infertility and is correlated with Ksheena Shukra (oligozoospermia). Shodhana procedures are to be performed before the administration of Vajikarana drugs, especially Virechana Karma has been indicated in the cases of Shukra Dushti. The fruit of Ashwatha (Ficus religiosa Linn.) has been indicated in premature ejaculation and low sperm count. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Virechan

Withdrawal exposure with withdrawal regulation training for smoking cessation: a randomized controlled pilot trial.

INTRODUCTION: Although withdrawal processes form a key motivational basis for cigarette use, smoking cessation treatments appear to exert only modest effects on withdrawal. One treatment option for further reducing withdrawal severity would be to provide smokers with withdrawal regulation training. The objective of this study was to pilot a smoking cessation intervention comprising withdrawal exposure with withdrawal regulation training. METHODS: Adult smokers (N=80) were randomized to one of two conditions: 1) Withdrawal Exposure with Withdrawal Regulation Training (WT), which included the d

Psychiatric Patients Tracking Through a Private Social Network for Relatives: Development and Pilot Study.

The treatment of psychiatric patients requires different health care from that of patients from other medical specialties. In particular, in the case of Department of Psychiatry from the Zamora Hospital (Spain), the period of time which patients require institutionalized care is a tiny part of their treatment. A large part of health care provided to the patient is aimed at his/her rehabilitation and social integration through day-care centres, supervised flats or activities. Conversely, several reports reveal that approximately 50 % of Internet users use the network as a source of health infor

Using ultrasound visual feedback to remediate velar fronting in preschool children: A pilot study.

Anecdotally, velar fronting can be difficult to remediate in some children. This pilot study examined the use of ultrasound visual feedback in remediating velar fronting in typically developing children. A single-case, multiple-baseline across-subjects experimental design was used to examine acquisition, retention and generalisation of velar treatment targets. Two otherwise typically developing children (P1, aged 4;0; P3, aged 4;11) completed the study. The productions of /k/ and /ɡ/ at syllable level were targeted during treatment. P1 improved her productions of /k/ and /ɡ/ at syllable level

Use of Molecular Diagnostic Tools for the Identification of Species Responsible for Snakebite in Nepal: A Pilot Study.

Snakebite is an important medical emergency in rural Nepal. Correct identification of the biting species is crucial for clinicians to choose appropriate treatment and anticipate complications. This is particularly important for neurotoxic envenoming which, depending on the snake species involved, may not respond to available antivenoms. Adequate species identification tools are lacking. This study used a combination of morphological and molecular approaches (PCR-aided DNA sequencing from swabs of bite sites) to determine the contribution of venomous and non-venomous species to the snakebite bu

Rationale and design of platelet transfusions in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation: the PATH pilot study.

IntroductionIn patients with transient thrombocytopenia being treated with high-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell rescue-haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), prophylactic transfusions are standard therapy to prevent bleeding. However, a recent multicentre trial suggests that prophylactic platelet transfusions in HSCT may not be necessary. Additionally, the potential overuse of platelet products places a burden on a scarce healthcare resource. Moreover, the benefit of prophylactic platelet transfusions to prevent clinically relevant haemorrhage is debatable. Current randomised

Measurement of middle ear pressure changes during balloon eustachian tuboplasty: a pilot study.

CONCLUSION: The middle ear pressure changes detected during BET can be directly attributed to the balloon inflation and may represent a second, immediate, mechanism of action of BET. BET seems to be safe with respect to the risk of a barotrauma. Further human studies are now necessary to confirm the results and gain more insight into the mechanism of action of BET. OBJECTIVE: Since the introduction of Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty (BET) as a treatment of chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction, the precise mechanism of action is unknown. Long-term effects of BET may be related to observed microfr

Continuous Monitoring of Turning Mobility and Its Association to Falls and Cognitive Function: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty turning is a major contributor to mobility disability, falls, and reduced quality of life in older people because it requires dynamic balance control that worsens with age. However, no study has quantified the quality and quantity of turning during normal daily activities in older people. The objective of this pilot study was to determine if quality of turning during daily activities is associated with falls and/or cognitive function. METHODS: Thirty-five elderly participants (85 ± 8 years) wore three Opal inertial sensors. Turning and activity rate were measured. Based

Effect of cardiopulmonary bypass on platelet mitochondrial respiration and correlation with aggregation and bleeding: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may cause platelet dysfunction, contributing to bleeding. There are no investigations of how CPB affects platelet mitochondrial respiration and what correlation this has with platelet aggregation and bleeding. METHODS: We studied platelet mitochondrial respiration and aggregation in eighteen adult cardiac surgery patients having CPB. The relationships between respiration, aggregation and postoperative bleeding were analyzed. RESULTS: Platelet respiration, reflected by the respiratory control ratio (RCR), was unchanged after CPB (mean difference in RCR

A pilot study on Hla-G locus control region haplotypes and cervical intraepithelial neoplasias.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can induce cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN) grades 1, 2 and 3. Untreated, these lesions may progress to cervical cancer (CC) which is the third most common cancer in women worldwide. HLA-G plays an immunotolerant role in the immune response. The aim of this study was to characterize the configuration of SNPs located at the distal promoter of HLA-G in patients with CIN2 and CIN3 and control women. The study sample was composed of 207 women as follows: 73 diagnosed with CIN2 lesions, 56 with CIN3 and 78 healthy control women. Genotyping was performed by sequen
