We used data from the 1983 Italian National Health Survey, based on 58,462 adults ages 25 years and over who are representative of the general Italian population, to compare the prevalence of 16 major chronic diseases or groups of diseases in alcohol abstainers (ex- and never-drinkers combined) and current drinkers. We found elevated odds ratios among alcohol abstainers for diabetes, hypertension, myocardial infarction, other heart diseases, anemias, gastroduodenal ulcer, cholelithiasis, liver cirrhosis, urolithiasis, and renal insufficiency.

A service-oriented screening program for serologic detection of viral and parasitic infections during gestation is described for three different population groups. Significance of a determination of primary cytomegalovirus infection is documented. A screening program for detection of immunity to rubella is recommended, but the feasibility of similar programs for herpes simplex virus and Epstein-Barr virus warrants further study. Because of the low frequency of toxoplasmosis, education of patients instead of screening may be appropriate.

The bifurcated needle technique for BCG vaccination was compared with intradermal injection in a mass BCG and smallpox vaccination programme in Afghanistan. In all population groups the bifurcated needle technique produced substantial tuberculin sensitivity, which however was significantly inferior to that following intradermal injection. The advantages of the bifurcated needle technique did not result in a significant increase in vaccination coverage and output. Under the present circumstances vaccination by bifurcated needle would probably be more expensive than intradermal vaccination.

A prospective case-control study was conducted to determine the association between Campylobacter jejuni infection and childhood Guillain-Barré syndrome in the Indian population.
