Association Between Physical Activity and the Risk of Burnout in Health Care Workers: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a multidimensional psychological syndrome that arises from chronic workplace stress. Health care workers (HCWs), who operate in physically and emotionally exhausting work contexts, constitute a vulnerable group. This, coupled with its subsequent impact on patients and public economic resources, makes burnout a significant public health concern. Various self-care practices have been suggested to have a positive effect on burnout among HCWs. Of these, physical activity stands out for its ability to combine psychological, physiological, and biochemical mechanisms. In fact,

The impact of neurological disability and sensory loss on mindfulness practice.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based approaches are increasingly recommended in the management of medical conditions associated with sensory loss and absence, such as Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). Yet the implications of undertaking practices such as body scanning when living with sensory loss have not been considered. This study aimed to explore the impact of sensory loss on the practice and experience of mindfulness in qualified mindfulness teachers with SCI/FND/MS. METHODS: Eight mindfulness teachers (5 females, 3 males) with SCI/FND

Move to health-a holistic approach to the management of chronic low back pain: an intervention and implementation protocol developed for a pragmatic clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic pain conditions is growing. Low back pain was the primary cause of disability worldwide out of 156 conditions assessed between 1990 and 2016, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study. Conventional medical approaches have failed to identify effective and long-lasting approaches for the management of chronic pain, and often fail to consider the multiple domains that influence overall health and can contribute to the pain experience. Leading international organizations that focus on pain research have stated the importance of considering these other do

Are students dependent on AI in writing courses? Analyzing factors influencing dependence on generative AI through the I-PACE model.

BACKGROUND: The rapid penetration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of education has brought about an improvement in learning efficiency, but it has also triggered serious concerns. The harms of students' excessive dependence on AI to complete learning tasks, the weakening of critical thinking, and the degradation of self-learning ability are gradually emerging. This forces researchers to deeply understand the intrinsic mechanism of users' psychological dependence on AI. The theoretical framework of problematic behavior has been fully developed and can effectively explain and predic

Gender as a sensor of nurses' depression, compassion fatigue and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Gender is a sensor in certain professional psychological risks. One of those professions is nursing; it has a humanistic nature that is double-loaded with triggers of negative psychological sequelae such as depression and compassion fatigue. To help male and female nurses cope successfully with variable trauma, resilience pathways are activated, yet using different mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to assess the differences in depression, compassion fatigue, and resilience based on gender and the variables of education, marital status, and income. METHODS: 631 hospital-bas

A pain research strategy for Europe: A European survey and position paper of the European Pain Federation EFIC.

BACKGROUND: Pain is the leading cause of disability and reduced quality of life worldwide. Despite the increasing burden for patients and healthcare systems, pain research remains underfunded and under focused. Having stakeholders identify and prioritize areas that need urgent attention in the field will help focus funding topics, reduce 'research waste', improve the effectiveness of pain research and therapy and promote the uptake of research evidence. In this study, the European Pain Federation (EFIC) developed a Pain Research Strategy for Europe. METHODS: The study used multiple methods, i

Content and delivery of pre-operative interventions for patients undergoing total knee replacement: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: Total knee replacement (TKR) is a common operation typically performed for end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Patients awaiting TKR often have poor health-related quality of life. Approximately 20% of patients experience persistent pain post-TKR. Pre-operative TKR interventions could improve pre- and post-operative outcomes, but future research is required to inform their design. This review aimed to identify and synthesize recent literature on the content and delivery of pre-operative TKR interventions to help guide future research and clinical practice. METHODS: This rapid review in

Mental and physical health problems before and after detention: A matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with poor health are largely overrepresented in prison populations. However, it remains unclear whether their poor health status already exists prior to their detention or reflects an effect of detention. We examined the health of detainees in the year before and after their detention and compared this with the health of matched non-detainees. METHODS: In this matched cohort study, we linked national data on all persons detained in the Netherlands in 2014/2015 to electronic health records (EHR's) of a representative sample of general practitioners in the Netherlands. Association of wound genesis on varying aspects of health-related quality of life in patients with different types of chronic wounds: Results of a cross-sectional multicentre study.

Patients with chronic wounds are significantly impaired in their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The validated Wound-QoL questionnaire allows assessing the impact of chronic wounds on different aspects of HRQoL including physical, psychological, and everyday life-related impairments. The aim of our study was to investigate associations of these HRQoL dimensions with age, sex, and particularly wound genesis. In this retrospective, cross-sectional, multicentre study, Wound-QoL questionnaires from clinical routine of patients with venous leg ulcers, arterial leg ulcers, mixed leg ulcers,

Neuropsychological management of multiple sclerosis: evaluation of a supervised and customized cognitive rehabilitation program for self-used at home (SEPIA): protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive and mood disorders negatively impact daily life in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Pharmacological treatments did not demonstrate any effect on cognition compared with cognitive rehabilitation (CR). However, if CR programs offer promising results on cognition, they are less consistent concerning mood and quality of life (QoL). In this context, we designed a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of an innovative computerized CR program, conducted at home, on QoL. Secondary objectives will estimate the improvement, or the stabilization over time, of pa

Nalmefene. Alcohol dependence: no advance.

Alcohol dependence is a chronic, severe and sometimes fatal disease. Psychological and social support is a crucial element of patient management. Acamprosate and naltrexone are the drugs of choice to help patients remain abstinent, but they are only moderately effective. Nalmefene, an opioid receptor antagonist related to naltrexone, has been authorised in the European Union to help alcohol-dependent patients reduce their alcohol consumption. Nalmefene has not been compared with naltrexone or acamprosate in clinical trials. Clinical evaluation is mainly based on two double-blind, randomised, p

Effectiveness of jyoti meditation for patients with chronic neck pain and psychological distress--a randomized controlled clinical trial.

UNLABELLED: Chronic neck pain is a common medical complaint partly mediated by psychosocial distress and having a high socioeconomic impact. There is preliminary evidence that stress reduction by meditation might be beneficial in chronic pain syndromes. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week meditation program (jyoti meditation) in patients with chronic neck pain by means of a randomized clinical trial. Eighty-nine patients (aged 49.7 ± 10.5 years, 73 female) with chronic neck pain who scored >40 mm on a 100-mm visual analog scale and had concomitant increased perceived stress wer

[An integrated approach to medical personnel management in the context of digital transformation of healthcare].

The article addresses the problem of social management of medical personnel amid the digital transformation of healthcare and significant changes in the relationships among medical workers, patients, administrative structures, and digital systems. In response to current interdisciplinary shifts, an integrated model for managing medical personnel is proposed - one that accounts for macrosocial factors, mechanisms of social perception related to the profession, and aggregated indicators at the level of the workers' subjective world. The methodological foundation is a systems approach, within whi

The Case for Peer-Support in Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Ukrainian Refugees in Europe.

Since the escalation of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, more than six million Ukrainians have sought refuge across Europe, facing significant psychosocial strain. Disrupted social networks, family separation, economic uncertainty, and barriers to services contribute to elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress, particularly among women and single mothers who constitute the majority of refugees. Despite host countries' efforts to provide protection and basic services, access to mental health care remains limited due to overstretched systems, language barriers, burea
