PURPOSE: To evaluate the ocular hypertensive response to repetitive cycles of high-dose systemic corticosteroid in young patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five patients up to 6 years of age with ALL who received chemotherapy between November 2003 and March 2005 were examined. As maintenance therapy, they received oral or intravenous dexamethasone 6 to 12 mg/m²/day for 2 weeks, followed by 1-week taparing and 5 weeks break were used in 1 cycle. It has been suggested that breast milk may play a role in the prevention of certain childhood cancers. We undertook a systematic review of published studies investigating the association between breast-feeding and childhood cancers using Medline (1966 to June 2004), supplemented with auto alerts and manual searches. We report the case of an 11-month-old patient with a clinical diagnosis of infantile acute lymphoblastic leukemia and an MLL (11q23) rearrangement in 69% of nuclei, revealed with interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). We report 6 children, aged 4.5- 16 years, with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia with back pain, exacerbated by walking as the first symptom of disease. Collapse of the vertebral bodies at multiple levels was shown on imaging. The presented group had good prognosis. In densitometric examination of BMD (bone mineral density) was observed loss in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae in 5 out of 6 children. Chemotherapy resulted in decrease of pain and spontaneous remodelling of the vertebrae.
