Understanding monocyte-driven neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease using human brain organoid microphysiological systems.

Increasing evidence suggests that Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis strongly correlates with neuroinflammation. Peripheral monocytes are crucial components of the human immune system that may play a role in neuroinflammation, but their contribution to AD pathogenesis is largely understudied partially due to the lack of appropriate human models. Here, we present human cortical organoid microphysiological systems (hCO-MPSs) for modeling dynamic AD neuroinflammation mediated by monocytes. By incorporating 3D printed devices into an existing cortical organoid protocol, 96 hCO-MPSs can be estab

Sample environment for simultaneous quasi-elastic neutron scattering and Raman spectroscopy experiments demonstrated on polymer films under changing humidity and temperature.

Understanding the dynamic and structural properties of matter across different timescales and length scales is essential for elucidating the … date large samples (up to 5 × 5 cm) and provides space for additional measurement equipment. The 3D-printing technique allows the integration of channels into the chamber walls, which are used for cooling and heating, resulting in highly homogeneous temperature distributions. This is key to achieving a uniform humidity in the chamber. The chamber works wit …

Personalized Joint Replacement: Landmark-Free Morphometric Analysis of Distal Radii.

Background: Fractures of the distal radius are common, particularly among young men and elderly women, often leading to painful wrist arthritis, especially if the joint surface has been affected. Traditional treatments of the wrist, such as full or partial wrist fusion, limit movement, and common wrist prostheses have high complication rates. Regenerative medicine and 3D bioprinting offer the potential for personalized joint replacements. Methods: This study evaluates using the contralateral radius as a template for creating customized distal radius prostheses. Bilateral CT scans of healthy wr…

Endoscopic Implantation of a Biodegradable Tracheal Stent: Toward Pediatric Applications in Airway Surgery - A Preclinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructions of the tracheobronchial tree can result from various etiologies. Most cases of tracheal stenosis or tracheomalacia are associated with patient-specific anatomical and functional abnormalities, making treatment challenging. Despite progress in the development of tracheal support devices, the optimal or near-optimal stent design remains elusive. METHODS: A multidisciplinary team developed a novel endoscopically implantable tracheal stent using three-dimensional (3D)-printed bioabsorbable polymer caprolactone. The stents were implanted into the trachea of 6 healthy adult

3D bioprinting of stromal cells-laden artificial cornea based on visible light-crosslinkable bioinks forming multilength networks.

3D bioprinting has the potential for the rapid and precise engineering of hydrogel constructs that can mimic the structural and optical complexity of a healthy cornea. However, the use of existing light-activated bioinks for corneal printing is limited by their poor cytocompatibility, use of cytotoxic photoinitiators (PIs), low photo-crosslinking efficiency, and opaque/colored surface of the printed material. Herein, we report a fast-curable, non-cytotoxic, optically transparent bioprinting system using a new water-soluble benzoyl phosphinate-based PI and photocrosslinkable methacrylated hyalu…

Dynamic flow for efficient partial decellularization of tracheal grafts: A preliminary rabbit study.

OBJECTIVE: Bioengineered tracheal grafts are a potential solution for the repair of long-segment tracheal defects. A recent advancement is partially decellularized tracheal grafts (PDTGs) which enable regeneration of host epithelium and retain viable donor chondrocytes for hypothesized benefits to mechanical properties. We propose a novel and tunable 3D-printed bioreactor for creating large animal PDTG that brings this technology closer to the bedside. METHODS: Conventional agitated immersion with surfactant and enzymatic activity was used to partially decellularize New Zealand white rabbit (

Bioprinting of Synthetic Cell-like Lipid Vesicles to Augment the Functionality of Tissues after Manufacturing.

Bioprinting is an automated bioassembly method that enables the formation of human tissue-like constructs to restore or replace damaged tissues. Regardless of the employed bioprinting method, cells undergo mechanical stress that can impact their survival and function postprinting. In this study, we investigate the use of a synthetic cell-like unit, giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs), as adjuvants of the cellular function of human cells postprinting, or in future as the complete replacement of human cells. We analyzed the impact of two nozzle-based bioprinting methods (drop-on-demand and extrusi…

Impact of illustrated backgrounds on the automatic assessment of fingermark quality.

In the fingermark detection field, background illustrations may negatively impact the visibility of the marks in presence. They can indeed locally reduce the contrast or mask ridge details. When conducting a research project, the choice for plain or illustrated substrates is mostly driven by the research objectives as well as the development level of the investigated technique (e.g., new reagent, comparison between two techniques, semi-operational test). Also, it is not clear how the human assessors in charge of grading the quality of the detected fingermarks actually cope with fingermarks sta

Minimal-invasive, image guided, 360-degree resection of ilio-lumbo-sacral ostechondroma, planned on the 3D model in a child with hereditary multiple ostechondroma (HMO).

BACKGROUND: Hereditary Multiple Osteochondromas (HMO), previously known as Multiple Hereditary Exostoses (MHE), is a genetic disorder characterized by the formation of multiple, benign, exostoses (osteochondromas) growing from the metaphyseal region of long bones as well as from the axial skeleton. Lesions originating from the lumbar spine region are rare, and are most common growing from the posterior element of the vertebrae. HMO associated osteochondromas are difficult to treat due to continuous and incontrollable growth of these lesions and a lifetime risk for malignant transformation. CA

Normscan: open-source Python software to create average models from CT scans.

PURPOSE: Age-matched average 3D models facilitate both surgical planning and intraoperative guidance of cranial birth defects such as craniosynostosis. We aimed to develop an algorithm that accepts any number of CT scans as input and generates highly accurate, average models with minimal user input that are ready for 3D printing and clinical use. METHODS: Using a compiled database of 'normal' pediatric computed tomography (CT) scans, we report Normscan, an open-source platform built in Python that allows users to generate normative models of CT scans through user-defined landmarks. We use the…
