Assessment of enflicoxib efficacy in the control of postoperative pain and inflammation in dogs undergoing orthopaedic surgery. A pilot randomised clinical trial.

Postoperative pain is most effectively managed pre-emptively and enflicoxib characteristics make it a good candidate to control it with a single administration. To assess the efficacy of enflicoxib in the control of postoperative pain and inflammation associated with orthopaedic surgery, twenty-eight dogs were randomised to receive 8 mg/kg enflicoxib (n = 14) orally the day before surgery, or 0.2 mg/kg meloxicam (n = 14) subcutaneously at induction and orally at 0.1 mg/kg daily every 24 h for seven days. Veterinarians assessed efficacy with the Glasgow Composite Pain Scale Short-Form (GCPS-SF)

The effect of opioid-free anaesthesia on pain and prognosis in gynaecological laparoscopic surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of opioid-free anaesthesia on postoperative pain and prognosis in gynaecological laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: A systematic search of four English and four Chinese databases was conducted up to 31 January 2024. Ten randomised controlled trials involving 861 patients were included. RESULTS: Opioid-free anaesthesia substantially reduced the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (odds ratio = 0.25), lowered pain scores measured by numeric rating scale (mean difference = -1.43) and Visual Analog Scale (mean differenc = -1.50), improved Quality of Reco

Patient-reported pain, satisfaction, adverse effects, and deviations from ambulatory surgery pain medication.

OBJECTIVES: Addressing the challenges of ambulatory surgery involves balancing effective pain relief with minimizing the side effects of pain medication. Due to the heightened risk of opioid abuse, Helsinki University Hospital (Finland) has had a stringent oxycodone prescription policy. This policy prompts an exploration into whether ambulatory surgery patients experience severe post-surgical pain and whether an increase in prescribed opioids would cause elevation in adverse effects. METHODS: This prospective cohort study, with a 1-week follow-up, included 111 adult ambulatory surgery patient

Do Regional Nerve Blocks During Bimaxillary Surgery Decrease Postoperative Pain and Vomiting Compared With Patient-Controlled Analgesia?

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain after orthognathic surgery is commonly managed with opioids, which can cause nausea and vomiting. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether regional nerve blocks during bimaxillary surgery reduced postoperative pain and vomiting compared with patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND SAMPLE: This retrospective cohort study recruited patients who underwent bimaxillary surgery between August 2018 and September 2020 at the Fourth Military Medical University Hospital. Participants whose procedures involved the cheekbone, tempo

Is Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting Associated With Increased Postoperative Pain in Patients Undergoing Minor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Under General Anesthesia?

BACKGROUND: Whether postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) contributes to increased postoperative pain (POP) remains unclear, although POP is reported to cause PONV. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether PONV following minor oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) under general anesthesia increases POP. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: The researchers implemented a retrospective cohort study. Patients who presented to Saitama Medical University Hospital between January 2021 and August 2022 and who required minor OMS under general anesthesia were identified from a review of electronic r

Does lidocaine reduce pain intensity during corticosteroid injection? A double-blind randomized controlled equivalence trial.

Of the strategies considered to limit the discomfort of corticosteroid injection, one is to inject without lidocaine to reduce the total volume and avoid acidity. In a Bayesian trial, adults receiving corticosteroid injections were randomized to receive 0.5 mL of triamcinolone with or without 0.5 mL of lidocaine. Serial analysis was performed until a 95% probability of presence or absence of a 1.0-point difference in pain intensity on the 0-10 Numerical Rating Scale was reached. Injections with lidocaine were associated with a median of 2.4-point lower pain intensity during injection with a 95

Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Interbody Fusion Versus Microdiscectomy Without Fusion for Recurrent Lumbar Disk Herniation: A Prospective Comparative Study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the clinical outcome of minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF) versus standard revision diskectomy for recurrent lumbar disk herniation (RLDH). BACKGROUND: RLDH is the most common cause of redo surgery after a microdiscectomy. Commonly, in patients without evidence of spinal instability, many surgeons would simply redo microdiscectomy, while others proceed to a redo microdiscectomy with arthrodesis. According to the literature, there is no evidence of what the best management of an RLDH would be. METHODS: Thi

Impact of the supine position versus left horizontal position on colonoscopy insertion: a 2-center, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Colonoscopy insertion is painful for some patients and is one of the main barriers to screening colonoscopy. Few studies have assessed the impact of the supine position (SP) on colonoscopy insertion, especially for unsedated patients. The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to clarify this issue. METHODS: Unsedated patients were randomized to SP or left horizontal position (LHP) as the starting position of colonoscopy insertion. The primary outcome measure was cecal intubation time (CIT), and the secondary outcome measures were descending colon intubation time (DI
