PURPOSE: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a medical condition in which gastric contents reflux, directly or indirectly, causing morphological and neurological alterations in the upper aerodigestive system. Alginates are a common solution to this problem.
METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review of the MEDLINE (via PubMed), Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials, and Scopus databases without temporal limitations. Our goal was to gather all available data published in English on the use of alginates in patients with LPR.
RESULTS: A total of 134 articles were screene

With the rapid development of industry, it is pretty critical to detect the heavy metals. Recently, the 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole derivatives with different numbers of rotatable phenyl m (m = 1,2,3) fluorescent probes HLm were synthesized. However, the theoretical analysis of the mechanism was still missing. In this work, we have systematically researched the mechanisms of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and the detection of Cu(II), Zn(II) ions for the hydrogen-bond system HLm though quantum chemistry methods. By bond parameters and the minimum energy pathways anal

A phthalimide probe (P1) possessing a hydroxylamine group on the benzene ring has been prepared for fluorescence sensing of copper ions. The detection is based on the reaction between hydroxylamine and copper ions, resulting in two fluorescent products through hydroxyl rearrangement and dehydroxylation reactions. P1 shows a specific and sensitive fluorescence response towards copper ions with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.11 nM (N = 3). The copper impurities from the industrial sources of the "click" ligand (tris(benzyltriazolylmethyl)amine (TBTA)) have been successfully examined using P1. T

Direct and rapid analysis of glyoxal by soft ionization mass spectrometry remains a great challenge due to its low ionization efficiency in existing soft ionization techniques, such as proton transfer reaction (PTR) and photoionization (PI). In this work, we developed a new VUV lamp-based cluster-mediated CH2Br2+ chemical ionization (CMCI) source for time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS), which was accomplished by employing photoionization-generated CH2Br2+ as the reactant ion and co-sampling of glyoxal with high-concentration ethanol (EtOH). The signal intensity of glyoxal could be enhance

Proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) have long been considered as the ideal treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and their limitations and side effects have revealed a need for new therapeutic approaches. At present, the therapeutic gains achieved are relatively small or limited to groups of patients with specific characteristics. This article updates the contributions, indications, and limitations of pharmacological, endoscopic, and surgical treatment.

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a highly prevalent, chronic disorder, whose knowledge remains limited and the management of these patients changes continuously. This review provides a summary of the most recent advancements in the pathogenesis of this disease and the new drugs introduced into the market to overcome some of the unmet needs of traditional therapies. Nowadays, the most fruitful diagnostic examinations are 24-hour impedance-pH monitoring, which allows us to separate true NERD from esophageal functional disorders and high-resolution manometry, which helps to exclude the

Magnesium (Mg2+) is the second most abundant intracellular and fourth extracellular cation found in the body and is involved in a wide range of functions in the human cell and human physiology. Its role in most of the enzyme processes (ATP-ases)-stabilisation of nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), regulation of calcium and potassium ion channels, proliferation, glucose metabolism and apoptosis-make it one of the most important cations in the cell. Three pathogenetic mechanisms are mainly implicated in the development of hypomagnesaemia: reduced food intake, decreased intestinal absorption and increased

F1-ATPase is a membrane-extrinsic catalytic subcomplex of F-type ATP synthase, an enzyme that uses the proton motive force across biological membranes to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The isolation of the intact F1-ATPase from its native source is an essential prerequisite to characterize the enzyme's protein composition, kinetic parameters, and sensitivity to inhibitors. A highly pure and homogeneous F1-ATPase can be used for structural studies, which provide insight into molecular mechanisms of ATP synthesis and hydrolysis. This article describes a procedure for the purification of t

Although metal ions are involved in a myriad of biological processes, noninvasive detection of free metal ions in deep tissue remains a formidable challenge. We present an approach for specific sensing of the presence of Ca(2+) in which the amplification strategy of chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) is combined with the broad range of chemical shifts found in (19)F NMR spectroscopy to obtain magnetic resonance images of Ca(2+). We exploited the chemical shift change (Δω) of (19)F upon binding of Ca(2+) to the 5,5'-difluoro derivative of 1,2-bis(o-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraa

Functional heartburn--persistent symptoms of esophageal reflux with no objective evidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)--is the most common cause of failure of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy, but it is often overlooked by internists and gastroenterologists.

Cyclophilin (CyP) D is a regulator of the mitochondrial F-ATP synthase. Here we report the discovery of a form of CyPD lacking the first 10 (mouse) or 13 (human) N-terminal residues (ΔN-CyPD), a protein region with species-specific features. NMR studies on recombinant human full-length CyPD (FL-CyPD) and ΔN-CyPD form revealed that the N-terminus is highly flexible, in contrast with the rigid globular part. We have studied the interactions of FL and ΔN-CyPD with F-ATP synthase at the OSCP subunit, a site where CyPD binding inhibits catalysis and favors the transition of the enzyme complex to th

Bacterial survival in acidic environments depends on urea channels like UreI, which neutralize protons after importing urea and hydrolyzing it to ammonia and carbon dioxide. While pH-dependent gating was attributed to periplasmic histidines, the role of cytoplasmic residues remained unexplored. Using yeast complementation assays, in vitro permeability measurements, systematic sequence analysis, and molecular dynamics simulations, we identify a conserved cytoplasmic glutamic acid residue (E136 in Streptococcus salivarius, E135 in Helicobacter hepaticus, E159 in Helicobacter pylori) as a pH sens…
