ViroFind: A novel target-enrichment deep-sequencing platform reveals a complex JC virus population in the brain of PML patients.

Deep nucleotide sequencing enables the unbiased, broad-spectrum detection of viruses in clinical samples without requiring an a priori hypothesis for the source of infection. However, its use in clinical research applications is limited by low cost-effectiveness given that most of the sequencing information from clinical samples is related to the human genome, which renders the analysis of viral genomes challenging. To overcome this limitation we developed ViroFind, an in-solution target-enrichment platform for virus detection and discovery in clinical samples. ViroFind comprises 165,433 viral

Effect of tDCS stimulation of motor cortex and cerebellum on EEG classification of motor imagery and sensorimotor band power.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a technique for brain modulation that has potential to be used in motor neurorehabilitation. Considering that the cerebellum and motor cortex exert influence on the motor network, their stimulation could enhance motor functions, such as motor imagery, and be utilized for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) during motor neurorehabilitation. METHODS: A new tDCS montage that influences cerebellum and either right-hand or feet motor area is proposed and validated with a simulation of electric field. The effect of current density (0, 0.02,

Effects of Parathyroid Hormone Administration on Bone Strength in Hypoparathyroidism.

The microstructural skeletal phenotype of hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT), a disorder of inadequate parathyroid hormone secretion, is altered trabecular microarchitecture with increased trabecular bone volume and thickness. Using 2-D histomorphometric analysis, we previously found that 2 years of PTH(1-84) in HypoPT is associated with reduced trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and an increase in trabecular number (Tb.N). We have now utilized direct 3-D microstructural analysis to determine the extent to which these changes may be related to bone strength. Iliac crest bone biopsies from HypoPT subjects (

Slow temporal summation of pain for assessment of central pain sensitivity and clinical pain of fibromyalgia patients.

BACKGROUND: In healthy individuals slow temporal summation of pain or wind-up (WU) can be evoked by repetitive heat-pulses at frequencies of ≥.33 Hz. Previous WU studies have used various stimulus frequencies and intensities to characterize central sensitization of human subjects including fibromyalgia (FM) patients. However, many trials demonstrated considerable WU-variability including zero WU or even wind-down (WD) at stimulus intensities sufficient for activating C-nociceptors. Additionally, few WU-protocols have controlled for contributions of individual pain sensitivity to WU-magnitude,

Glasgow smiles better: an examination of adolescent mental well-being and the 'Glasgow effect'.

BACKGROUND: The existence of a negative 'Glasgow effect' on health has been much disputed. Previously, Glasgow's poor health was believed to be due to high levels of poverty. However, more recent studies investigating adult health outcomes have shown an effect over and above that of deprivation. OBJECTIVES: To examine the existence of a 'Glasgow effect' on mental well-being and subjective health of an adolescent sample. STUDY DESIGN: Data from the 2006 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children cross-sectional survey were analyzed. METHODS: Data were modelled using multilevel logistic and lin

Neural abnormalities in early-onset and adolescence-onset conduct disorder.

CONTEXT: Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by severe antisocial behavior that emerges in childhood (early-onset CD [EO-CD]) or adolescence (adolescence-onset CD [AO-CD]). Early-onset CD is proposed to have a neurodevelopmental basis, whereas AO-CD is thought to emerge owing to social mimicry of deviant peers. However, this developmental taxonomic theory is debated after reports of neuropsychological impairments in both CD subtypes. A critical, although unaddressed, issue is whether these subtypes present similar or distinct neurophysiological profiles. Hence, we investigated neurophysiolo

Language gains in 4-6-year-old children with developmental language disorder and the relation with language profile, severity, multilingualism and non-verbal cognition.

BACKGROUND: Early and effective treatment for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) is important. Although a growing body of research shows the effects of interventions at the group level, clinicians observe large individual differences in language growth, and differences in outcomes across language domains. A systematic understanding of how child characteristics contribute to changes in language skills is still lacking. AIMS: To assess changes in the language domains: expressive morphosyntax; receptive and expressive vocabulary; and comprehension, in children in special needs e

Re-evaluating heart rate variability biomarkers for glucose sensing: the impact of age normalisation and subject-independent validation.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) derived from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals offers a promising non-invasive window into glycemic status; however, existing studies frequently combine distinct glucose measurements and employ validation strategies susceptible to data leakage. Because HRV declines by approximately 3-5% per decade due to age-related autonomic degeneration, absolute HRV values conflate the effects of aging with diabetes-specific autonomic dysfunction. We hypothesised that normalising HRV features using an age-dependent scaling factor would isolate the diabetes-specific com

Periodontitis, type 2 diabetes, and other risk factors for implant failure: A nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and periodontitis have been suggested as risk factors for dental implant failure, but data supporting such a link are limited. This study investigates the association between T2DM and periodontitis and the risk of dental implant failure. METHODS: A nested case-control study with a risk-set sampling scheme was performed. Implant failure cases (550 failed implants in 328 subjects) and controls (1156 implants in 502 subjects) with a mean of 59.07 months follow-up were identified and information on patient-related factors was collected from patient records. Carvedilol to prevent decompensation of cirrhosis in patients with clinically significant portal hypertension stratified by liver stiffness: study protocol for a randomied, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial in China.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) are recommended to be treated with non-selective beta-blockers (ie, carvedilol) to prevent the first hepatic decompensation event by the renewing Baveno VII consensus. CSPH is defined by hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG)≥10 mm Hg; however, the HVPG measurement is not widely adopted due to its invasiveness. Liver stiffness (LS)≥25 kPa can be used as a surrogate of HVPG≥10 mm Hg to rule in CSPH with 90% of the positive predicting value in majority aetiologies of patients. A compelling argument is existing for usi

Label-free based quantitative proteomics analysis to explore the molecular mechanism of gynecological cold coagulation and blood stasis syndrome.

Cold coagulation and blood stasis (CCBS) syndrome is one of the common traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes of gynecological diseases. However, the molecular mechanism of CCBS syndrome is still unclear. Thus, there is a need to reveal the occurrence and regulation mechanism of CCBS syndrome, in order to provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of CCBS syndrome in gynecological diseases. The plasma proteins in primary dysmenorrhea (PD) patients with CCBS syndrome, endometriosis (EMS) patients with CCBS syndrome, and healthy women were screened using Label-free quantitative proteomi

Impact of integrated yoga therapy on cognitive impairment and cardiac dysfunction in relation to quality of life in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy: Study protocol for a two-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) and cardiac dysfunction (CRCD) are common adverse effects seen in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Even though these effects significantly influence daily functioning and overall quality of life, effective strategies to avoid and/or mitigate these adverse effects remain elusive. Yoga as a Mind-body intervention has been used increasingly by cancer patients and has undergone empirical investigations as a potential intervention for patients with cancer. Furthermore, yoga is associated with improved cognition and cardiac

Considering the role of speech processing in cleft-related speech sound disorders: Implications for causal pathways and classification systems.

BACKGROUND: Classification systems in healthcare support shared understanding of conditions for clinical communication, service monitoring and development, and research. Children born with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP+/-L) are at high risk of developing cleft-related speech sound disorder (SSD). The way cleft-related SSD is represented and described in SSD classification systems varies. Reflecting on the potential causal pathways for different cleft-related speech features, including the role of speech processing skills, may inform how cleft-related SSD is represented in classifi

Coinfection of Schistosoma Species with Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C Viruses.

Although a considerable number of studies have been undertaken to date, it is still controversial as to whether or not coinfection with schistosomiasis increases the susceptibility to or progression from Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This review is a closer examination of the key studies conducted on human populations on clinical factors that were published in English between 1975 and January 2015. Our review is mainly based on tables containing the salient information, which are arranged first by study population, country of study and publication date. We provi

Validating superior maize hybrids in all India coordinated trials using REMATTOOL-R: a decision support approach.

INTRODUCTION: The identification and advancement of superior maize hybrids under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Maize rely on multi-environment evaluation integrating grain yield, maturity, and agronomic performance. Interpretation of large multi-environment datasets is often complex, time-consuming, and susceptible to subjectivity, highlighting the need for objective and reproducible decision-support tools. This study evaluated the effectiveness of REMATTOOL-R (Relative Maturity Adjustment Tool in R) in validating the existing hybrid advancement framework adopted under
