Detection and determination of surface levels of poloxamer and PVA surfactant on biodegradable nanospheres using SSIMS and XPS.

The surface chemical characterisation of sub-200 nm poly(DL-lactide co-glycolide) nanospheres has been carried out using the complementary analytical techniques of static secondary ion mass spectrometry (SSIMS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nanospheres, which are of interest for site-specific drug delivery, were prepared using an emulsification-solvent evaporation technique with poly(vinyl alcohol), Poloxamer 407 and Poloxamine 908 respectively as stabilisers. The presence of surfactant molecules on the surface of cleaned biodegradable colloids was confirmed and identified on

Physician advice and individual behaviors about cardiovascular disease risk reduction--seven states and Puerto Rico, 1997.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) (e.g., heart disease and stroke) is the leading cause of death in the United States and accounted for 959,227 deaths in 1996. Strategies to reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke include lifestyle changes (e.g., eating fewer high-fat and high-cholesterol foods) and increasing physical activity. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommend that, as part of a preventive health examination, all primary-care providers counsel their patients about a healthy diet and regular physical activity. AHA also recommends low-do

Trabeculectomy with 5-fluorouracil.

The effect of subconjunctival injection of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) after trabeculectomy was studied retrospectively in 205 eyes of 168 patients. A life table analysis of the surgical outcome was based on the type of glaucoma and age related differences, and a comparison was made with patients who had trabeculectomy without subconjunctival 5-FU. The success rate at 30 months after trabeculectomy with 5-FU therapy was considerably higher in primary open-angle glaucoma at 93.6% (72.7%), secondary glaucoma at 88.9% (72.4%), and refractory glaucoma at 72.2% (32.5%) with (or without) the use of ocular

Primary Sjogren's syndrome and autoimmune hemolytic anemia in sisters. A family study.

Familial primary Sjogren's syndrome is infrequently reported despite a strong association with a genetically determined factor, HLA-DR3. Although autoimmune hemolytic anemia occurring with secondary Sjogren's syndrome has been well-documented, its association with primary Sjogren's syndrome has not previously been well-recognized. Thus, the unique occurrence of primary Sjogren's syndrome and autoimmune hemolytic anemia in two sisters prompted investigation of other family members for autoimmune diseases and serologic phenomena and their relationships to HLA genotypes. Serologic analysis (antin

PSMA PET-guided intensification of postprostatectomy salvage radiotherapy for prostate cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET is used to guide postprostatectomy salvage radiotherapy (SRT) and enable intensification through dose escalation and target modification. The oncologic benefit and safety profile of PSMA PET-guided intensification remain uncertain. We aimed to synthesize comparative and single-arm evidence on oncologic outcomes and toxicity of PSMA PET-guided intensification of postprostatectomy SRT. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane Library

Association between stress hyperglycemic ratio and all-cause mortality in critically ill patients following cardiac surgery: A retrospective cohort study.

The stress hyperglycemic ratio (SHR) can be used as a reliable predictor of various adverse cardiovascular outcomes. However, there are fewer studies on the relationship between SHR and the risk of all-cause mortality in critically ill patients undergoing cardiac surgery (CS). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between SHR levels and all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with CS admitted to the intensive care unit. Data from 3117 CS intensive care unit patients (Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV) were analyzed. SHR values were categorized

Lower butyrylcholinesterase is associated with postoperative delirium in adult cardiac surgery patients: a secondary analysis of two prospective studies.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a serious complication after surgery and is associated with prolonged stay in the Intensive-Care-Unit (ICU), increased mortality, and cognitive decline. Older patients undergoing cardiac surgery are at higher risk for POD. Disbalance in the cholinergic pathway activity has been suggested to play an important role in the pathogenesis of POD. This secondary analysis investigates the association between butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity and POD in adult cardiac surgery patients. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed using pooled data from two

Functional Outcomes and Safety of Endovascular Thrombectomy in Pediatric Acute Ischemic Stroke With Cardiac Abnormalities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiac abnormalities are among the most common and complex risk factors of pediatric acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Although endovascular treatment (EVT) is increasingly used in children, uncertainty persists regarding its safety and effectiveness in patients with underlying cardiac disease, leading to therapeutic hesitation in this high-risk population. The aim of this study was to determine whether the association between EVT and functional outcomes after pediatric AIS differs according to cardiac abnormality status. METHODS: This study was a retrospective secondar

Prediction of perinatal mortality in early-onset fetal growth restriction: A post hoc analysis of the Dutch STRIDER trial to predict perinatal mortality in early-onset fetal growth restriction.

OBJECTIVE: Early-onset fetal growth restriction affects about 0.3% of pregnancies, posing high perinatal risks due to placental insufficiency. Early-onset fetal growth restriction often coincides with early-onset pre-eclampsia, associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Clinical management varies among clinicians, with emphasis on intensive monitoring and timely delivery. Our objective was to improve clinical prediction of perinatal mortality in early-onset fetal growth restriction for parental counseling. STUDY DESIGN: This was a secondary analysis of prospective cohort data from t
