Eight 6-week-old piglets were inoculated with a strain of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) isolated from an outbreak which occurred naturally in the Po Valley in 1988. Two non-infected animals, kept in the same cage, were used as controls. Out of the eight inoculated piglets, two died and two were suppressed on the 2nd post infection day (PID), the four remaining were killed on the 5th, 7th, 11th and 15th PIDs. The suggested relationship between Borrelia burgdorferi and seronegative spondyloarthropathies has been studied in 125 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). IgG antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi were present in 11 of 125 patients (8.8%) and in 25 of 125 controls (20%). No patient had clinical Lyme borreliosis. HLA-B27 status was known for 82 patients with AS. There was no difference between B27+ and B27 patients. This study provides no evidence that Borrelia burgdorferi is associated with AS.

Twenty-four cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome were studied in Delhi in the months of September and October, 1988. The majority of these cases were boys aged 6-10 years. Classical symptoms of dengue (fever, headache, aesthesia, myalgia) occurred in all the patients. Digestive symptoms (nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain and hepatomegaly) were also common. Although the nutritional status of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis is considered to be poor and inversely related to disease activity, information on nutritional habits of these patients is scanty. Dietary habits of 93 patients suffering from active seropositive rheumatoid arthritis, functional class 2 or 3, confirmed by an interview with a dietician (dietary history method), revealed a significant gap between energy, carbohydrate, and fat intakes and recommended amounts, adjusted for age, sex, body weight and physical activity.

Fifty infectious mononucleosis (IM) and 150 non-infectious mononucleosis (non-IM) sera were tested by a hemadsorption immunocapture test (HIT) for the detection of heterophile antibodies of IgM, IgA, and IgE classes. A 44-year-old man with epigastric pain, fever, and atypical lymphocytosis was found to have severe antral gastritis with radiologic and endoscopic features suggestive of malignancy. Histopathologic and serologic findings were diagnostic of cytomegalovirus gastric infection. Clinical involvement of the stomach in the course of cytomegalovirus mononucleosis is unique, and this case expands further the spectrum of clinical disease in the otherwise healthy adult.

IgM antibodies against Cysticercus cellulosae in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was demonstrated by ELISA immunoenzymatic assay in neurocysticercosis. CSF samples of 41 patients were analyzed for this purpose. Diagnosis was neurocysticercosis in 26 and neurosyphilis in 5; abnormalities were not registered in the other 10 cases. Neurosyphilis samples and no-abnormalities samples were considered as control groups. We report 3 cases of severe syphilitic neuro-meningitis during the secondary stage: acute transverse dorsal myelitis with permanent paraplegia in a 17 year old teenager (case no. 1), uveo-meningitis with intracranial hypertension and diminished vision in a 52 year old woman (case no. 2), lower medulla lesion in a 46 year old man (case no. 3). In 1977, a large rubella outbreak occurred in Hawaii. Because attack rates were high among women of childbearing age, we conducted extensive surveillance efforts to detect both pregnancies complicated by rubella and cases of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Initial surveillance included a survey of physicians and hospitals, review of fetal death and birth certificates, and cord blood screening for rubella-specific IgM of infants born following the epidemic. Seven cases of acute renal failure consecutive to haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) due to the Hantaan virus or to a serologically related virus are reported. The importance of animals in human schistosomiasis in South Africa is reviewed. The prevalence of animal schistosome species in humans, the role of animals as reservoir hosts of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni, and the possibility of false-positive serological reactions in humans following exposure to animal or bird bilharzia are considered. It is concluded that, as regards animal schistosomes, at present only S. mattheei and a hybrid of S. mattheei and S. haematobium pose a potential threat to human health in South Africa.

Using ELISA, we studied excreted-secreted (ES) antigens of adults O. volvulus obtained from nodules digested by collagenase and kept alive in vitro. A total of 590 young females were screened for rubella antibodies. About 10% were seronegative, the frequency being lowest in vaccinated school girls.
