Role of the phagocyte in host-parasite interactions. XII. Hydrogen peroxide-myeloperoxidase bactericidal system in the phagocyte.

An antimicrobial system in polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) consisting of myeloperoxidase and hydrogen peroxide has been proposed. This system appears to be activated during phagocytosis as a result of the stimulated metabolic activities. A lysed-granules (LG) fraction was prepared from guinea pig exudative PMN. LG alone possessed bactericidal activity which was related to the pH of the reaction; the lower the pH, the more marked the activity. When low concentrations of both H(2)O(2) and LG were combined under conditions where neither factor alone exhibited significant killing power, there

Diversity of the midstream urine microbiome in adults with chronic kidney disease.

PURPOSE: To examine the characteristics of the midstream urine microbiome in adults with stage 3-5 non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney dis … Streptococcus (n = 7), Lactobacillus (n = 7), Gardnerella (n = 7), Prevotella (n = 4), Escherichia_Shigella (n = 3), and Enterobacteriaceae (n = 2); the rest lacked a dominant genus. The samples had high levels of diversity, as measured by the inverse Simpson [7.24 (95% CI 6.76, 7.81)], Chao [558.24 (95% CI 381.70, 879.35)], and Shannon indices [2.60 (95% …

Investigations of the voltage-gated Ca++ channels and phosphodiesterase enzyme inhibitory-like potential explain the medicinal use of Otostegia fruticosa in diarrhea and hypermotile gut.

BACKGROUND: The leaves of Otostegia fruticosa have been used in traditional medical systems to treat diarrhea and gut spasms. In this study, … vity with a resultant minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 550 μg/mL against Escherichia coli, Shigella sonnei, and Salmonella typhimurium, whereas the extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing E. coli strain was found to be sensitive to a higher concentration of the extract (MIC of 675 μg/mL). CONCLUSION: The present study is a pilot report on the det …

Run Chang Tong Mi tea alleviates functional constipation through regulating gut microbiota and SCF/c-kit pathway.

BACKGROUND: Functional constipation (FC) is a gastrointestinal motility disorder related to intestinal transit function and hormonal imbalan … improved intestinal barrier function, which was associated with decreased abundances of Escherichia-Shigella and Dubosiella. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that RCTM alleviated constipation in rats with FC, and this amelioration was associated with modulation of the gut microbiota, elevation of SCFAs, and restoration of the SCF/c-kit pathway.

The antimicrobial alternative precursor-derived peracetic acid and zinc oxide lead to a sex dependent microbial modulation in weaning piglets.

Several authors described the sexual dimorphism of the gut microbiota in pigs and other animals in relation to sex-specific modulation follo … concentration, whilst the same treatment led to the reduction of Moraxella in females. Escherichia-Shigella was reduced after zinc oxide administration, but only in females. Finally, although Lactobacillus was less abundant in males in the caecum, both zinc oxide and peracetic acid led to its increase, but only in males.

Symbiotic combination of Akkermansia muciniphila and inosine alleviates alcohol-induced liver injury by modulating gut dysbiosis and immune responses.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is exacerbated by disruptions in intestinal microecology and immune imbalances within the gut-live … ption, the combined treatment reduced the abundance of harmful bacteria (Oscillibacter, Escherichia/Shigella, and Alistipes) induced by alcohol consumption, promoting the growth of butyrate-producing bacteria (Akkermansia, Lactobacillus, and Clostridium IV). Flow cytometry revealed that alcohol consumption reduced T regulatory (Treg) populations while incr …
