Oxytocin-induced increases in cytokines and clinical effect on the core social features of autism: Analyses of RCT datasets.

Although oxytocin may provide a novel therapeutics for the core features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), previous results regarding the efficacy of repeated or higher dose oxytocin are controversial, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The current study is aimed to clarify whether repeated oxytocin alter plasma cytokine levels in relation to clinical changes of autism social core feature. Here we analyzed cytokine concentrations using comprehensive proteomics of plasmas of 207 adult males with high-functioning ASD collected from two independent multi-center large-scale randomized

Effects of Ovarian Hormone Levels on Stress, Cigarette Craving, and Smoking in a Laboratory Relapse Paradigm Among Females Who Smoke Daily.

INTRODUCTION: Females, versus males, have shown a slower decline in smoking prevalence, greater smoking-related mortality and morbidity, and tend to have more difficulty achieving and maintaining abstinence. Identifying sex-specific risk factors is needed to improve outcomes. Though ovarian hormones have been evaluated for their role in smoking and relapse, measures tend to be static and infrequent, failing to capture the influence of increasing or decreasing levels. AIMS AND METHODS: The present study evaluated the effect of static and fluctuating levels of ovarian hormones (ie, progesterone

Maternal capital predicts investment in infant growth and development through lactation.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal capital (MC) is a broad term from evolutionary biology, referring to any aspects of maternal phenotype that represent resources available for investment in offspring. We investigated MC in breastfeeding mothers of late preterm and early term infants, examining its relationship with infant and breastfeeding outcomes. We also determined whether MC modified the effect of the relaxation intervention on these outcomes. METHODS: The data was collected as part of a randomized controlled trial investigating breastfeeding relaxation in 72 mothers of late preterm and early term i

Access to quality health resources and environmental toxins affect the relationship between brain structure and BMI in a sample of pre and early adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Environmental resources are related to childhood obesity risk and altered brain development, but whether these relationships are stable or if they have sustained impact is unknown. Here, we utilized a multidimensional index of childhood neighborhood conditions to compare the influence of various social and environmental disparities (SED) on body mass index (BMI)-brain relationships over a 2-year period in early adolescence. METHODS: Data were gathered the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study® (n = 2,970, 49.8% female, 69.1% White, no siblings). Structure magnetic resonance

A qualitative evaluation of cognitive-behavioural therapy components for social anxiety in autistic adults: Lived experiences from a modified group program.

Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for social anxiety. However, despite the high prevalence of social anxiety among autistic adults, much less is known about how autistic people experience each CBT component used in treatment. This qualitative study explores autistic adults' perspectives on a modified cognitive-behaviour therapy group programme for social anxiety, focusing on the perceived effectiveness of CBT components and the identification of needed modifications. Twenty-seven participants who completed the intervention took part in semi-structured interviews.

Association of Social Media Use With Mental Health Conditions of Nonpatients During the COVID-19 Outbreak: Insights from a National Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Considerable research has been devoted to examining the mental health conditions of patients with COVID-19 and medical staff attending to these patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are few insights concerning how the pandemic may take a toll on the mental health of the general population, and especially of nonpatients (ie, individuals who have not contracted COVID-19). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between social media use and mental health conditions in the general population based on a national representative sample during the peak o

Social contact recovery and depressive symptoms after the pandemic lockdowns: the lasting impact of child neglect.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a major risk factor for depression and impairs social functioning in adulthood. The COVID-19 pandemic, through its widespread social restrictions, provided a unique opportunity to examine how adults with and without histories of child maltreatment re-established social contacts after a shared period of isolation. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether adults with a history of child maltreatment were slower to recover social contact after the COVID-19 lockdowns and whether these social contact trajectories predicted depressive symptoms one year after the p

Youth social dynamics in low-income urban communities in Brazil: spaces, leisure, and vulnerabilities to HIV.

Given the incidence of HIV among youth in Brazil and the dismantling of educational policies on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) by the federal government (2019-2022), the lack of current national studies with heterosexual youth on these topics is worrisome. To expand this knowledge, we conducted a socioanthropological study in spaces of sociability and leisure for heterosexual youth in low-income communities in five Brazilian cities. According to our collected field observations and reports, leisure and sociability take place in the communities (dances, parties), given that economic and s

Alcoholism and liver disease in Mexico: genetic and environmental factors.

Alcoholism and cirrhosis, which are two of the most serious health problems worldwide, have a broad spectrum of clinical outcomes. Both diseases are influenced by genetic susceptibility and cultural traits that differ globally but are specific for each population. In contrast to other regions around the world, Mexicans present the highest drinking score and a high mortality rate for alcoholic liver disease with an intermediate category level of per capita alcohol consumption. Mexico has a unique history of alcohol consumption that is linked to profound anthropological and social aspects. The M

Child Maltreatment and Whole-person Health: Investigation of Psychosocial Buffers Using Structural Equation Modeling.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate psychosocial factors that may modify associations between child maltreatment and whole-person health (ie, depressive symptoms, chronic health conditions, psychological well-being, and inflammation). METHODS: Data were drawn from a subsample ( N = 1255) of Midlife in the United States study, a national longitudinal study of health and well-being. Structural equation modeling was applied to test hypotheses. RESULTS: Child maltreatment was associated with more depressive symptoms (standardized β = 0.29, p < .001), more chronic health condi

Neighborhood environmental deprivation predicts the generalized neurocognitive deficit in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The generalized neurocognitive deficit is a core feature of schizophrenia (SZ). However, no current treatments have demonstrated satisfactory efficacy in remediating cognitive impairment in this population. This lack of treatment progress might be due in part to the failure to consider broader environmental factors and social determinants of health. The current paper explored the contributing role of these factors to the generalized neurocognitive deficit in SZ. METHODS: Participants included 114 outpatients with SZ and 117 matched healthy controls (CN) who completed a cross-secti

The Hub Genes Related to Osteoporosis Were Identified by Bioinformatics Analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Osteoporosis (OP) is commonly encountered, which is a kind of systemic injury of bone mass and microstructure, leading to brittle fractures. With the aging of the population, this disease will pose a more serious impact on medical, social, and economic aspects, especially postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). This study is aimed at figuring out potential therapeutic targets and new biomarkers in OP via bioinformatics tools. After differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis, we successfully identified 97 upregulated and 172 downregulated DEGs. They are mainly concentrated in actin binding, regul

Impact of housing environment and management on pre-/post-weaning piglet productivity.

The complex environment surrounding young pigs reared in intensive housing systems directly influences their productivity and livelihood. Much of the seminal literature utilized housing and husbandry practices that have since drastically evolved through advances in genetic potential, nutrition, health, and technology. This review focuses on the environmental interaction and responses of pigs during the first 8 wk of life, separated into pre-weaning (creep areas) and post-weaning (nursery or wean-finish) phases. Further, a perspective on instrumentation and precision technologies for animal-bas

The interaction between sexual reward/ deprivation and the acquisition, extinction and reinstatement of morphine-seeking behavior.

Natural rewards and abused drugs affect the function of the common brain's reward system. Interaction between social and drug rewards can change the vulnerability to development of drug addiction. Here, we investigate the effects of sexual experience and sex deprivation on the acquisition, maintenance, and drug prime-induced reinstatement of morphine-seeking behavior in male mice using conditioned place preference (CPP). CPP induced with morphine (3, 5, 7 mg/kg, s.c. for 3 days) lasted for 10 days after cessation of morphine treatment and priming dose of morphine (2 mg/kg, s.c.) reinstated the

Clinical Practice Protocol of Creative Music Therapy for Preterm Infants and Their Parents in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Creative music therapy for preterm infants and their parents (CMT) has emerged as a promising family-integrated early intervention involving communicative musicality to improve infant development, parental well-being, and bonding. It aims at relaxing and nurturing the infant as well as promoting safety and social interaction for the parent-infant dyad. A music therapist specially trained in CMT hums or sings in an infant-directed, improvised, lullaby style continually adjusting to the individual needs, expressions, and breathing pattern of the preterm infant. Based on the principles of family-…

Maternal verbal aggression in early infancy and child's internalizing symptoms: interaction by common oxytocin polymorphisms.

Genetic predisposition of social sensitivity might affect vulnerability to develop psychopathology after early life stress exposure. This study examined whether maternal verbally aggressive behavior in early infancy interacts with oxytocin polymorphisms in developing internalizing symptoms at ages 5-6 and 11-12. In the Amsterdam-Born-Children-and-their-Development (ABCD) study, a large observational, population-based birth cohort, maternal verbally aggressive behavior was assessed in the 13th postnatal week by a self-report questionnaire. Internalizing symptoms at age 5-6 were assessed by mate
