[Ectodermal dysplasia syndrome].

Ectodermal dysplasias (ED) are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by developmental dystrophies of ectodermal structures, such as hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, onychodysplasia and hypodontia or anodontia. All forms of this heterogeneous group are genetically transmitted. Two genes are localized and identified, namely ectodermal dysplasia anhidrotic (EDA) and downless (DL). Currently the genes and gene products are defined, but the function of the proteins is not fully known. The location of the genes has enabled prenatal diagnosis and a more accurate identification of possible carr

Psychiatric sequelae and psychosocial adjustment following ocular trauma: a retrospective pilot study.

AIMS: To identify the prevalence of psychiatric and adjustment problems after ocular trauma and those factors related to a poor outcome. METHODS: 47 patients were assessed by structured interview, of whom 45 satisfactorily completed three standardised self report measures of psychological functioning, subjective distress, and social adjustment. RESULTS: 33% of patients displayed psychiatric "caseness". A number of features of the victim consistently resulted in poor outcome including a psychiatric history and peritraumatic dissociation. CONCLUSION: These preliminary findings suggest ocular

Power and the politics of abuse: rethinking violence in Filipina-Australian marriages.

In this paper we take as a starting point the perceived high prevalence of domestic violence in marriages between Filipino women and Australian men. In in-depth interviews and structured questionnaires with service providers and with Filipinas married to Anglo-Australian and Filipino men the issue of underreporting physical and emotional violence was a recurring theme. We explore the relationships of power that characterize these marriages, the changes in balance of power that result from the externalization of anger, physical and verbal violence, and stigmatization of domestic violence experi

Relationship of social perceptions and self-concept in bulimia nervosa.

Although numerous studies have examined the families of bulimic individuals, none have explicitly addressed how family factors relate to self-concept among patients with bulimia. This study used L. Benjamin's' structural analysis of social behavior (1974) rating scales to assess how perceptions of parental relationships relate to self-concept. The results indicate that female patients with bulimia perceive both parents as hostilely disengaged. Furthermore, the self-concepts of patients with bulimia were significantly associated with perceptions of paternal attack/friendliness, which differenti

Construction of Fatherhood Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged and Predominantly Black Fathers: A Grounded Theory Study.

This grounded theory study examines how socioeconomically disadvantaged and predominantly Black fathers construct fatherhood identity amid systemic adversity. Drawing on 11 focus groups with 40 fathers enrolled in a U.S. Midwestern fatherhood program, the study explores the multidimensional nature of fatherhood and the ways in which structural, interpersonal, and identity-based factors shape paternal engagement. Using iterative coding and comparative analysis, findings reveal three central themes: (a) evolving dimensions of engaged fatherhood that transcend biological ties and traditional patr

Experimental evidence for structured information-sharing networks reducing medical errors.

Errors in clinical decision-making are disturbingly common. Recent studies have found that 10 to 15% of all clinical decisions regarding diagnoses and treatment are inaccurate. Here, we experimentally study the ability of structured information-sharing networks among clinicians to improve clinicians' diagnostic accuracy and treatment decisions. We use a pool of 2,941 practicing clinicians recruited from around the United States to conduct 84 independent group-level trials, ranging across seven different clinical vignettes for topics known to exhibit high rates of diagnostic or treatment error

Screening for psychosocial risk factors in patients with coronary heart disease-recommendations for clinical practice.

Psychosocial risk factors like low socio-economic status, chronic family or work stress, social isolation, negative emotions (e.g., chronic depression or acute anxiety), and negative personality patterns such as Type-D-pattern or hostility, may contribute significantly to the development and adverse outcome of coronary heart disease. Therefore, systematic screening for psychosocial risk factors in cardiological practice is recommended in order to initiate adequate intervention strategies, e.g., to involve additional psychosocial counselling or treatment. Reliable methods to assess psychosocial

The association between expectations of stigma and experiences of structural stigma in healthcare encounters among a cross-section of Canadians living with a mental illness or substance use disorder.

People living with mental illnesses or substance use disorders often anticipate being devalued or discriminated against by others (anticipatory stigma). These expectations can lead to heightened sensitivity to social rejection, hypervigilance, and overreactions to perceived threats. Healthcare settings are a common context for structural stigma, where negative organizational cultures and provider behaviours can compromise patient-provider interactions and quality of care, contributing to poorer health outcomes. Grounded in Modified labelling theory, this study examined whether higher expectati

Empirical evidence for structural balance theory in functional brain networks.

Structural balance theory, widely used in social network research, has recently been applied to brain network studies to explore how higher-order interactions relate to neural function and dysfunction. The theory is founded on the core assumption that balanced triads, representing internally consistent relationships, are intrinsically stable, while imbalanced triads, which introduce structural tension, are unstable and tend to reconfigure toward balance. Despite its promising application, these foundational assumptions have not been empirically validated in the brain. Here, we address this gap

Evolutionary characteristics and driving factors of innovative cooperation networks in the field of CCUS technology in China.

This study explores the evolutionary characteristics and driving factors of innovative cooperation networks in the field of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology in China, laying a foundation for the governance of those networks. Taking the patents in the field of CCUS technology in China as the research object, this study analyzes the evolutionary characteristics of innovative cooperation networks based on social network theory. The exponential random graph model (ERGM) reveals the factors driving the evolution of innovative cooperation networks from three perspectives: e

Young fatherhood, masculinities, and structural factors in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: This paper explores the intricate interplay between young fatherhood, masculinities, and structural factors in South Africa. The country grapples with a complex web of social, economic, and cultural dynamics that shape the experiences of young men's transition into fatherhood. METHODS: This qualitative study used snowball and purposive sampling techniques. In-depth interviews were undertaken with 24 young biological fathers aged between 18 and 24 years in an informal settlement in Durban (12) and a rural community in Pietermaritzburg (12), KwaZulu-Natal. Four focus-group discussio

White matter structural network disturbances in first-episode, drug-naïve adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) would show inefficient whole-brain communication and dysconnectivity in the fronto-parietal-subcortical sub-networks in the white matter (WM) structural network. However, these hypotheses have yet to be tested. METHODS: Individual WM structural networks were constructed based on diffusion MRI data and deterministic tractography in 34 first-episode, medication-naïve adolescents with GAD and 27 healthy controls (HCs). Graph theory was applied to investigate the topological organization alteratio

A qualitative study of provider perspectives of structural barriers to cervical cancer screening among first nations women.

OBJECTIVE: In Canada, opportunistic screening programs have successfully reduced mortality from cervical cancer; however, minority or disadvantaged groups, as well as women in northern and rural areas, are inadequately recruited by this approach. Hence, we set out to examine the structural barriers that prevent First Nations women's participation in cervical cancer screening. METHODS: Using a participatory action research approach and semistructured interview guides, we conducted in-depth interviews with 18 experienced health care professionals, 12 of whom were also community members. Neural mechanisms of guided internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a protocol for a prospective multimodal MRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood, is associated with academic, social, and emotional difficulties. Although pharmacotherapy is widely used for treating ADHD, functional impairments often remain. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has demonstrated benefits in children with ADHD, and internet-based CBT (ICBT) may improve treatment accessibility. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying ICBT remain unclear, and neural markers predicting treatment responses have not been well established, particularly in chil
