The challenges of eating out for young people with eating disorders: a thematic analysis of the perspectives of young people, parents and carers, and clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Social eating is a key aspect of recovery for many individuals with an Eating Disorder (ED). To develop effective interventions to support recovery of social eating we need to understand the challenges that people with ED face when eating in public spaces. This study was conducted in the context of the development of a virtual reality graded-exposure café intervention for people with ED. The current analysis explores stakeholder perspectives on the challenges that people with ED face in café environments. METHODS: People with lived experience of ED (n = 15), parents/carers (n = 4)

Stigma, serostatus disclosure, coping strategies, and the role of social capital resources among HIV care-nonadherent MSM in Russia: a qualitative analysis.

The HIV epidemic continues to expand in Russia, with suboptimal levels of care uptake. This qualitative study aimed to characterize social capital resources and lived stigma experiences, coping, and disclosure among care-nonadherent men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in Russia. Twenty-five HIV-positive MSM - recruited online - completed in-depth interviews over Zoom, with data analyzed using MAXQDA software. Stigma was more likely to be encountered in interactions with persons with whom social ties were weaker such as medical providers and relatives, particularly males. Close frie

[Adapted Physical Activity for patients with chronic diseases in a therapeutic community].

The French therapeutic communities ("Appartements de Coordination Therapeutique (ACT)") are mostly members of the "National Federation of Accommodation for HIV+ and other chronic diseases. They provide accommodation for people living with chronic conditions (HIV hepatitis, cancers...) and in a situation of high psychosocial frailty. As a result of their coordinated multidisciplinary intervention, these structures provide the required support to access health care and facilitate social inclusion. They are designed to provide an appropriate response to people with cumulative medical and social c

Disadvantaged but different: variation among deprived communities in relation to child and family well-being.

BACKGROUND: Disadvantaged communities are increasingly the target for interventions. Sure Start was launched in England in 1999 to tackle child poverty and improve child and family services, with Sure Start Local Programmes (SSLPs) targeted at relatively small areas of marked deprivation. However, they are located in a range of different types of communities where they may provide services to very different resident populations. They are all disadvantaged but underlying that label there are specific patterns of variability, relevant for service provision. To evaluate the implementation, impact

Depression in later-life Puerto Rican primary care patients: the role of illness, stress, social integration, and religiosity.

BACKGROUND: Older Puerto Ricans belong to two rapidly growing demographic groups known to have high rates of depression: the aging and Hispanic populations. Studies of depression in Puerto Ricans have primarily focused on the impact of demographic factors and health. This study expands previous research, examining the relationships between depression and social stressors, social support, and religiosity, for Puerto Rican primary care patients aged 50 and older. PATIENTS: Participants included 303 Puerto Ricans from six primary care clinics in a northeastern city. METHODS: Patients completed …

Mental Health and Support Systems After Experiences of Sexual Victimization Among Young Sexual Minoritized Women and Gender Minoritized People.

This study aims to describe institutional and social supports for sexual and gender minoritized populations. Participants are from a mixed-method study on experiences of sexual violence among sexual and gender minoritized young people. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze data from semi-structured interviews (n = 25). One major barrier participants described included structural discrimination and violence (i.e., biphobia, misogyny, racism), which in turn contributed to challenges accessing support systems including mental health providers, sexual health services, and positive social…

[Homelessness and mental illnesses].

Homelessness is an expression of marked social exclusion phenomena and often particularly affects people with mental disorders. Mental disorders often precede the onset of homelessness but can also be a result of homelessness. Different forms of therapeutic and social support interventions have been evaluated in various countries, predominantly with an outreach treatment approach. These interventions were often combined with low threshold availability of housing programs. These showed positive effects on housing stability and reduction of psychiatric symptoms but not in reduction of substance …

Intimate Partner Violence Among Mothers of Sick Newborns in Ghana.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health problem estimated to affect 15%-71% of women worldwide. We sought to elicit IPV risks among mothers of sick newborns in Ghana. As part of a broader study on postpartum depression, we conducted semistructured surveys of 153 women in a mother-baby unit, assessing demographics, depression, social support, and IPV with the present partner. Forty-six percent of mothers reported some form of violence, mostly emotional (34%), followed by physical (17%), and sexual (15%). The study highlights the frequency of perinatal IPV and the associated ris…

Correlates of depressive symptoms after birth for Latinas who are overweight or obese.

Depression symptoms and overweight/obesity are common concerns during childbearing. Both conditions are associated with poor outcomes at birth and can have long-lasting consequences. Predictors of depressive symptoms among overweight and obese low-income and ethnically diverse women are not known. Data are from the Madres para la Salud trial with 139 postpartum Latinas. Depressive symptoms during a prior pregnancy were positively related, while social support and moderate intensity physical activity (PA) were negatively related to depressive symptoms after birth. Social support and PA may be e…

Resource loss as a predictor of posttrauma symptoms among college women following the mass shooting at Virginia Tech.

We examined risk factors for posttrauma symptomatology, 2 and 6 months following the April 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech. Using a conservation of resources framework and a Web-based survey methodology, we prospectively evaluated the relations among preshooting distress, social support, resource loss, and posttrauma symptomatology in a sample of 293 female students enrolled at the university at the time of the shootings. Structural equation modeling supported that preshooting social support and distress predicted resource loss postshooting. Resource loss predicted symptomatology 2 months …

The impact of neurological illness on marital relationships.

The current study investigated the impact of neurological illness on marital relationship satisfaction. Participants numbered 423 patients and 335 carers from motor neurone disease (MND), Huntington's disease (HD), Parkinson's, and multiple sclerosis (MS). The results demonstrated that patients and carers with HD had a significantly lower level of relationship satisfaction and sex life satisfaction than the other three illness groups. Further, patients with HD indicated a significantly higher level of relationship satisfaction than their carers. For MS and MND patients, social support predicte…

Exploring the Role of Social Connection in Interventions With Military Veterans Diagnosed With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Systematic Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: It has been identified that military veterans have distinct experiences of loneliness and social isolation and, when comparing this community to other client groups with a PTSD diagnosis, veterans respond less favorably to treatment. However, the link between PTSD and loneliness for veterans remains insufficiently researched and it is unclear if there are effective interventions tackling this distinct experience of loneliness. AIMS: This systematic narrative review aimed to synthesize existing evidence incorporating elements of social connection, social isolation, and loneliness w
