The relation among the bleeding time, the peripheral venous hematocrit, and the amount of blood shed at the template bleeding time site has not been previously defined. We studied this relation in 227 persons: 26 were patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), 137 were patients with a variety of other bleeding disorders, and 64 were healthy subjects. The bleeding time (mean +/- SD) for the healthy group was 7.1 +/- 1.2 minutes, and the amount of shed blood was 136.4 +/- 47.2 microL; in patients with ITP the bleeding time was 14.0 +/- 4.1 minutes and the shed blood was 508.1 +/- 3

The objective of this investigation was to protect rats against exocrine pancreatic atrophy by adding 22% fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), a natural fructan obtained from inulin, to the 50% copper-deficient diets containing qualitatively and quantitatively different carbohydrates. A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method is described for the simultaneous determination of retinol, alpha-tocopherol and retinyl palmitate in plasma. A variety of drugs, known to induce acute attacks in porphyric patients has been found to inhibit the glyoxalase pathway. Glyoxalase I is competitively inhibited by sulphadimidine, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, etc. Allylisopropyl acetamide (AIA) seems to inhibit glyoxalase II. This inhibition could play a contributing role in the overproduction of porphyrins in porphyria and thus help explain the mechanism of induction of porphyric attacks. The results indicate, that the Heme pathway and the glyoxalase cycle are closely connected.

A sensitive analytical procedure for bupivacaine dosing in plasma samples by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is described. After a two-step extraction, the analysis was performed using a C18 column and a mobile phase of 0.01 M sodium dihydrogen-phosphate (pH 2.1)-acetonitrile (80:20, v/v). The extraction yield of bupivacaine from plasma was 73.5 +/- 5.1% (mean +/- S.D., n = 10).
