The inferior high-pressure zone acts like a functional sphincter. This is formed in the absence of a muscle correlate, via a regional predominance of the sphincter tone caused by inhibition of activity of the longitudinal muscles through the membrane phreno-oesophagea in the region of the vestibulum gastro-oesophageale. Pressure variations in the vestibulum caused by respiration, are governed by a "rein mechanism". Swallowing produces a brief reflectory breakdown of the inferior high-pressure zone in the longitudinal muscles of the ösophagus via myogenic ventricular stimulus condution. Gastro-

OBJECTIVES: As immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) utilization increases in cancer treatment, immune-related adverse events continue to be recognized. Voice, swallowing, and oral dysfunction substantially impair quality of life and treatment tolerance in cancer patients, but the laryngological risks of ICI therapy remain unclear. We compared outcomes for these functions after ICI versus non-ICI antineoplastic therapies.
METHODS: Using the TriNetX research network, we identified adults with non-head and neck malignancies treated with ICIs versus non-ICI systemic antineoplastics. To isolate off-t

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria in Parkinson's disease (PD) is difficult to treat, especially post-subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS), as therapies like LSVT show variable efficacy and limited accessibility. "Yi Jin Jing, Wohu Pushi" posture-voice therapy (YJJ-WPVT), emphasizing postural coordination, offers a promising yet underexplored alternative. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of YJJ-WPVT versus Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) and no training for dysarthria in PD patients post-STN-DBS.
METHODS: This is a prospective, parallel-assignment, unblind

PURPOSE: Dysphagia is a prevalent symptom observed in acute stroke. Several bedside screening tests are employed for the early detection of dysphagia. Pulse oximetry emerges as a practical and supportive method to augment the existing techniques utilized during bedside swallowing assessments. Desaturation levels, as measured by pulse oximetry, are acknowledged as indicative of aspiration by certain screening tests. However, the predictive capability of pulse oximetry in determining aspiration remains a subject of controversy. The objective of this study was to compare aspiration and oxygen des

Introduction Chemoradiotherapy plays a major role in the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC). Persistent dysphagia following primary chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancers can have a devastating effect on a patient's quality of life. Many studies have shown that the dosimetric sparing of critical structures which were included in swallowing such as the pharyngeal constrictor muscle and larynx can provide improved functional outcomes and better quality of life. However, there are no current randomized studies confirming the benefits of such swallowing-sparing strategies. The aim is to

BACKGROUND: The effect of psychopathology on swallowing ability tends to be an overlooked issue in the assessment of dysphagic patients, possibly overshadowed by the given prominence to organic pathologies and the difficulties on the management of these patients. In addition, it should also be kept in mind that a great number of psychotropic drugs can affect swallowing adding problematic clinical issues in this area. Despite this, assessment of dysphagia should be considered as an extremely important issue, due to its impact on basic symptomatology, course of illness and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy is a hereditary motor neuron disease caused by the expansion of a polyglutamine tract in the androgen receptor. At present there are no treatments for spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, although leuprorelin suppressed the accumulation of pathogenic androgen receptors in a phase 2 trial. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of leuprorelin for spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy.

We report a 49-year-old man who presented progressive dysarthria, dysphagia, and left hemiparesis. The patient was well until June 28th of 1993 when he noted 'weakness' in his both legs; despite his weakness, he could play golf on that day. In the beginning of July, he noted difficulty in swallowing solid foods. He was admitted to the neurosurgery service of our hospital on July 15th of 1993 and a neurologic consultation was asked on July 17th. Neurologic examination at that time revealed an alert but somewhat childish man who appeared to have some difficulty in paying attention to questions.

This study used multiple methods in the same cohort to assess oral hypofunction, namely, poor oral hygiene, oral dryness, and diminished occlusal force, tongue-lip motor function, tongue pressure, masticatory function, and swallowing function. Oral hypofunction diagnoses differed in relation to the method used to assess oral dryness (in 6 patients) and poor oral hygiene (in 24 patients). Accurate diagnosis of oral hypofunction enables appropriate management of oral function. Future studies should evaluate other assessment items.

Glottic stenosis may be congenital, such as anterior glottic webs, or acquired, as a result of surgery or prolonged intubation. Glottic-level obstruction may occur as an isolated lesion or as part of multilevel airway stenosis. Careful evaluation is required to distinguish neural causes of impaired vocal fold motion from true mechanical fixation, as the underlying etiology can influences surgical decision-making. When addressing glottic-level stenosis, particular attention must be paid to the potential effects on voice and swallowing while striving to achieve adequate airway caliber.

The tongue is an essential organ for swallowing food, speaking, and even breathing. Due to medical reasons or traumatic accidents, the partial loss of this organ can severely affect the quality of life of patients. The tongue has a remarkable capacity for endogenous regeneration. In this case report, the effect of polynucleotides (PDRN) on stimulating tissue regeneration and healing was studied. A relevant recovery in phonemic pronunciation and a reduction in the formation of fibrotic tissue in the scar were observed. These results suggest that PDRN may be a safe and effective adjuvant for pro

The internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (IbSLN) plays a critical role in the sensory innervation of the supraglottic larynx. It is essential for protective reflexes such as coughing and swallowing. This nerve is frequently at risk during surgeries involving the cervical region, including thyroidectomy, carotid endarterectomy, and anterior cervical spine procedures. Injury to the IbSLN may lead to postoperative complications. A comprehensive review of the morphological and topographic characteristics of the IbSLN is presented, focusing on its anatomical course, relationships with ke

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a group of rare hereditary disorders characterized by impaired development of ectodermal derivatives. The anhidrotic (hypohidrotic) form of ED is accompanied by pronounced hypoplasia of the jaws, partial or complete adontia, leading to functional impairments (difficulty chewing, swallowing, and speaking) and pronounced aesthetic changes. These factors have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, causing psychological discomfort and social maladjustment. The article presents in detail a clinical case of a 20-year-old patient with anhidrotic (hypohid
