Asymmetries of visual attention after circumscribed subcortical vascular lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of the basal ganglia and the thalamus for basic processes of visuospatial attention METHODS: Fifteen patients with acute circumscribed vascular lesions (10 with haemorrhage and five with infarction) were included in the study. The lesions were confined exclusively to subcortical structures, such as the basal ganglia, internal capsule, and thalamus, which was confirmed by initial CT on the day of referral and MRI taken 14-28 days after clinical onset. These patients were examined with two computerised attentional tasks (one detection and one search task) meas

The impact of genetic counselling on risk perception and mental health in women with a family history of breast cancer.

The present study investigated: (1) perception of genetic risk and, (2) the psychological effects of genetic counselling in women with a family history of breast cancer. Using a prospective design, with assessment pre- and post-genetic counselling at clinics and by postal follow-up at 1, 6 and 12 months, attenders at four South London genetic clinics were assessed. Participants included 282 women with a family history of breast cancer. Outcome was measured in terms of mental health, cancer-specific distress and risk perception. High levels of cancer-specific distress were found pre-genetic cou

Characterizing stimulus-response functions using nonlinear regressors in parametric fMRI experiments.

Parametric study designs proved very useful in characterizing the relationship between experimental parameters (e.g., word presentation rate) and regional cerebral blood flow in positron emission tomography studies. In a previous paper we presented a method that fits nonlinear functions of stimulus or task parameters to hemodynamic responses, using second-order polynomial expansions. Here we expand this approach to model nonlinear relationships between BOLD responses and experimental parameters, using fMRI. We present a framework that allows this technique to be implemented in the context of t

Dopaminergic modulation of visual responses in toads. I. Apomorphine-induced effects on visually directed appetitive and consummatory prey-catching behavior.

This study confirms for a phylogenetically basal terrestrial vertebrate that dopaminergic modulations interfere with the visually directed appetitive and consummatory feeding behaviors orienting and snapping, respectively. (1) In common toads Bufo bufo, intralymphatic administration of the dopamine D2/D1-receptor agonist apomorphine led to a dose-dependent facilitation of prey-snapping in response to moving objects. The snapping activity reached a maximum 15-35 min after apomorphine injection. (2) To changes in configurational stimulus features, the basic pattern of discrimination was maintain

Bilateral lesions of the subthalamic nucleus induce multiple deficits in an attentional task in rats.

Lesioning the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been suggested as possible therapy for the treatment of parkinsonism. Previous experiments investigating this hypothesis in rats confirmed that excitotoxic STN lesions alleviate the motor impairment induced by striatal dopamine depletion, which reproduced the degeneration observed in parkinsonism, but elicited presumed non-motor deficits such as premature responding, suggesting that the STN could be involved in other aspects of response control. The aim of the present study was to extend this analysis to choice paradigms. We thus investigated the beh

Cortical blindness secondary to cyclosporine after orthotopic heart transplantation: a case report and review of the literature.

Cyclosporine neurotoxicity has been described after liver, kidney, and bone marrow transplantation and has been associated with a number of risk factors, including hypomagnesemia and low serum cholesterol levels. Reports in heart transplant recipients are less common. We present a patient with cortical blindness secondary to cyclosporine after orthotopic heart transplantation. The patient had confusion, focal visual field defects, and bilateral occipital lobe lesions shown on magnetic resonance imaging. Although he had significant clinical improvement with decreasing cyclosporine levels, resid

Manual performance in leukotomized and unleukotomized individuals with schizophrenia.

Seven leukotomized adults with schizophrenia (LS), eight unleukotomized adults with schizophrenia (ULS), and eight healthy control (C) individuals were required to reach toward and grasp a small object that was either stationary or moving. Reflective markers were placed on the subject's index finger, thumb and wrist, and movements were videotaped. As expected the LS and ULS groups moved slower than the C group when the target was stationary. However, when the target was moving, all three groups moved faster, with the LS and C groups having the same movement times, and the ULS group having the

Evidence for the influence of aging on distortion-product otoacoustic emissions in humans.

Previous measures of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in young adults suggested that these responses were capable of detecting the functional effects of auditory aging. The primary goal of the present study was to provide more detailed evidence for the influence of aging processes on the ability of healthy, older ears to generate DPOAEs. Toward this end, DPOAEs were examined in a series of human subjects, with clinically normal hearing, ranging in age from 31 to 60 years. Acoustic-distortion products were measured in two basic forms consisting of "audiograms" and response/grow

Event-related potential components N1, P2 and P3 to rare and frequent stimuli in intellectually impaired neurological patients.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) and attention performance data were collected in an auditory odd-ball paradigm from 24 intellectually impaired neurological patients, and compared with normal controls (n = 19). For the ERP components N1, P2 and P3, reference-independent measures (latency, global field power, current density at Cz, location of extreme potential, centroid location) were determined for the target stimulus and for the preceding and the following two "frequent" stimuli. In 8 of the 45 measures obtained, patients and controls differed significantly. To target stimuli, patients had sh

Simultaneous VEP and PERG investigations in early Parkinson's disease.

To evaluate whether visual evoked potential (VEP) and pattern electroretinogram (PERG) abnormalities may be detectable early in the course of Parkinson's disease (PD) and to assess a possible interdependence between retinal and cortical potentials, simultaneous VEP and PERG were carried out in nine patients with early PD. The mean (SD) duration of the disease was 10 (6) months. None of the patients had been previously treated with levodopa or other anti-parkinsonian drugs. The results show VEP and PERG abnormalities that are spatial stimulus dependent, with higher frequencies being more involv

Early detection of glaucomatous damage. II. Changes in the appearance of the optic disk.

Once we understand that an increase in the size of the optic disk cup is due to loss of optic nerve fibers combined with some physical tissue rearrangements, it is quite clear that cupping begins as soon as nerve loss begins. Methods to detect cupping are more sensitive to the earliest glaucoma damage than are present field testing methods. This conclusion is supported by large clinical studies and histological demonstration of nerve fiber loss prior to field loss in eyes with abnormal cups, asymmetric cupping, or nerve fiber layer abnormalities. While automated perimetry is likely to increase

Indirect self-destructive behavior in patients with Buerger's disease.

Patients with Buerger's disease (a circulatory illness) were studied to evaluate indirect self-destructive behavior (ISDB), evidence by neglect in following medical regimen, disregard of suggestions for environmental imporvements (avoidance of undue exposure to cold) and refusal to abstain from smoking. Personality characteristics and behavioral phenomena associated with ISDB were obtained by comparison of the files of 26 uncooperative patients with 26 matched cooperative controls with Buerger's disease and with 25 Buerger's disease patients representing a unselected annual population in a Vet

Augmented Reality Visualization and Navigation Operationalized in Biopsy of Indeterminate Splenic Mass.

This case report describes the successful use of an augmented reality (AR) guidance system (XR90, MediView XR Inc., Cleveland Ohio) to assist in the percutaneous biopsy of a splenic mass performed in a minor procedure room. Traditional two-dimensional (2D) imaging modalities such as ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) present limitations in depth perception, spatial orientation, and procedural ergonomics, particularly in anatomically complex and mobile regions like the spleen. The AR system integrates real-time ultrasound, electromagnetic (EM) tracking, and pre-procedural CT data to genera

A cloud-edge adaptive lightweight network with dynamic inference enables real-time ultrasound image segmentation.

Ultrasound image segmentation plays an important role in clinical diagnosis, but existing deep learning methods struggle to balance accuracy and efficiency, limiting practical deployment in resource-constrained medical scenarios. This study proposes a Cloud-Edge Adaptive Lightweight Network (CEA-Net) with dynamic inference, implementing parameter compression through a lightweight encoder constructed with depthwise separable convolutions and inverted residual structures, introducing serial channel-spatial attention mechanisms to enhance lesion feature representation, and designing intelligent r

Therapist presence and client session and symptom outcomes: A longitudinal examination of their reciprocal relationships.

The aim of this study was to explore how therapeutic presence predicted psychotherapy session quality (SQ) and client symptom (CS) reduction at both between-person and within-person between-session levels. The sample included 14,316 sessions involving 1,916 clients and their 173 trainee therapists in a master's level mental health counseling training program in China. Before each session, the client rated their symptom level. After every session, the therapist reported their level of therapeutic presence in the session, while the client rated their perception of the quality of the session. Ana

Strain-localized luminescent e-skin for high-resolution pressure mapping and visual force feedback.

Electronic skins (e-skins) that emulate human intuitive tactile perception with visual feedback capabilities are vital for next-generation wearables, robotics, and biomedical applications. However, existing visualized pressure mapping systems either require dense pixelated arrays that add bulk, complexity and signal crosstalk, or rely on rigid or semi‑rigid architecture,  and are not able to conform to dynamically changing curved, soft surfaces. Here, we report a soft mechano-electroluminescent e-skin for high-resolution visualized pressure mapping. Quantitative pressure sensing is achieved on

Individual differences in artificial neural networks capture individual differences in human behavior.

Human behavior differs substantially across individuals. While artificial neural networks (ANNs) are regarded as promising models of human perception, they are often assumed to lack such individual differences. Here, we demonstrate that multiple instances of the same ANN architecture exhibit substantial individual differences in behavior that mimic those observed in humans. We trained and tested 60 ANN instances from three architectures on a digit recognition task and found notable individual differences in overall accuracy, confidence, and response time (RT). Critically, these individual diff

Efficient event-based object detection with lightweight CNNs: a surprising advantage over transformers.

Achieving robust robotic perception in highly dynamic environments requires accurate and low-latency visual object detection. However, conventional RGB cameras often exhibit limited performance in such fast-changing scenarios due to significant blind time, imaging latency, and motion blur. In this context, event cameras have emerged as a promising solution, offering microsecond-level temporal resolution, high dynamic range, and immunity to motion blur. However, despite these significant theoretical advantages, algorithms for event cameras are still at a nascent stage. Existing approaches, incl
