Application methods of local anaesthetic infiltrations for postoperative pain relief in tonsillectomy: a prospective, randomised, double-blind, clinical trial.

Perioperative local anaesthetics are often used to reduce the postoperative pain in tonsillectomy. There exist three different ways of applying local anaesthetics: (1) pre-incisional peritonsillar; (2) post-tonsillectomy wound infiltration; (3) post-tonsillectomy packing with soaked gauze. The objective of the study is the evaluation of differences of pain reduction comparing the three different techniques of application. The study design mainly includes intra-individual, prospective and double-blinded. One hundred and eighty patients (3-45 years) with recurrent tonsillitis were included. The

Sporicidal activity of local anaesthetics and their binary combinations with preservatives.

The sporicidal activity of 1% solutions of five local anaesthetics and five preservatives (cetrimide, chlorocresol, chlorhexidine, phenoxyethanol and phenylmercuric nitrate) at their pharmacopeial concentrations, alone and in binary combinations was determined against Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger spores at different temperature levels by the surface viable count technique. The sporicidal activity of all tested systems were temperature dependent. A. niger spores were much more sensitive to the tested systems than B. subtilis spores. The temperature at which 99% of all spores were kil

[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2018].

In 2018, no new active pharmaceutical ingredients were released on the German market for horses or food-producing animals. One established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredient became available for an additional species: the inhalant anesthetic Isoflurane (Isofluran Baxter® vet) from the group of halogenated hydrocarbon compounds was additionally authorized for pigs (piglets). With Acepromazine, Mepivacaine and Oxyclozanide, three temporarily non-available active ingredients were reapproved in new drugs. Additionally, one drug with a new combination of active ingredients and one drug wit

The analgesic efficacy of lidocaine/prilocaine (EMLA) cream during fine-needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid nodules.

OBJECTIVE: Pain is one of the few drawbacks of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in patients with nodular thyroid disease (NTD). Lidocaine/prilocaine cream, an eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics (EMLA), is a frequently used topical anaesthetic. Despite its well-documented efficacy for the relief of pain associated with other cutaneous procedures that involve needle insertion, the analgesic role of EMLA has not been previously reported in patients with NTD who are undergoing FNAB. The aim of this study was to determine the analgesic efficacy of EMLA for FNAB-associated pain in patients w

A retrospective study of the incidence of neurological injury after axillary brachial plexus block.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that performing a nerve block under general anesthesia, as customary in pediatric population, may predispose to nerve injury. However, few clinical data exist to either support or refute this assertion. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data on all patients who received an axillary block for upper extremity surgery in our institution during an eight-year period. The blocks were performed under sedation or general anesthesia, without using a nerve stimulator. Perioperative records from the Hand Surgery Unit Clinic were reviewed for postoperative complaints

Determining the plasma concentration of ketamine that enhances epidural bupivacaine-and-morphine-induced analgesia.

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists enhance opioid-induced analgesia. The plasma concentration of ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist that enhances epidural morphine-and-bupivacaine-induced analgesia, is not known. We examined 24 patients with lung carcinoma or metastatic lung tumor who underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery in a placebo-controlled, double-blind manner 4 h after emergence from anesthesia. The morphine + ketamine group (n = 8) and morphine + placebo group (n = 8) received 5 mL volume of 2.5 mg morphine and 0.25% bupivacaine and the placebo + ketamine group (n
