Identifying Factors Associated with Low-Adherence and Subsequent HIV Seroconversions Among South African Women Enrolled in a Biomedical Intervention Trial.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of HIV infected individuals in the world. Developing and implementing effective biomedical interventions still remains urgent. Poor adherence has been commonly identified as one of the major barriers for the success of HIV prevention trials. A better understanding of how to improve adherence remains a research priority. In this analysis, younger age (<35 years), number of children ≤2, being single/not cohabiting and having a new partner during the study follow up were all significantly associated with poor adherence and subsequent HIV seroconversions.

Optimizing selection of large animals for antibody production by screening immune response to standard vaccines.

Antibodies made in large animals are integral to many biomedical research endeavors. Domesticated herd animals like goats, sheep, donkeys, horses and camelids all offer distinct advantages in antibody production. However, their cost of use is often prohibitive, especially where poor antigen response is commonplace; choosing a non-responsive animal can set a research program back or even prevent experiments from moving forward entirely. Over the course of production of antibodies from llamas, we found that some animals consistently produced a higher humoral antibody response than others, even t…

Biomedical retrieval-augmented generation for relation classification.

The rapid expansion of biomedical literature requires automated methods for accurate and efficient information extraction. This study addresses relation classification: given a pair of annotated biomedical entities in a research article title and abstract, assigning the relation that holds between them from a pre-defined set. We evaluate a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) framework in which semantically similar annotated examples are retrieved from a training pool and supplied to a large language model as in-context demonstrations. Four open-source LLMs are compared against a supervised De

Emerging trends in synthesis and application of chiral polyoxometalates.

Chiral polyoxometalates (cPOMs) are a class of inorganic organic hybrid materials that combine molecular chirality and metal oxygen cluster framework. They have both the chemical stability of inorganic polyoxometalates and the structural diversity of organic ligands. Unlike the traditional review which regards synthesis and application as a parallel separation field, this paper constructs a "hierarchical chiral transfer" framework to systematically explain the generation mechanism of molecular scale chirality, supramolecular scale transfer path and the amplification law of macro function. Beyond biomedical control: governance, social protection, and system gaps in tuberculosis control in Kazakhstan - a qualitative study of decision-makers.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge globally and in Kazakhstan, despite progress in reducing incidence. Increasing evidence highlights the role of social and structural determinants in shaping TB risk, disease progression, and treatment outcomes. However, limited research has explored how decision-makers conceptualize these factors and identify system-level gaps in TB control. This study aimed to examine regional decision-makers' perspectives on TB burden, social protection, health system capacity, and governance in Kazakhstan. METHODS: A qualitative study wa

Developing and delivering new medical technologies: issues beyond access.

The articles in this issue illuminate psychosocial issues raised by the development and delivery of new medical technologies. Five kinds of questions surface repeatedly: questions about a technology's purpose(s), the value judgments it presumes, the locus of its control, the external forces that drive it, and its long-term social risks. These questions take the discussion of new technologies beyond the challenge of improving access to their benefits. They also raise issues that will become increasingly important as the capabilities of medical technology expand. For example, they suggest resear

Separation of Avian Preovulatory Follicle Granulosa and Theca Cell Layers for Downstream Applications.

Layer hens (egg-laying chickens) and broiler breeders (breeding stock for meat-producing chickens) are crucial to the world's food supply as a reliable source of protein. They are also an emerging animal model for the study of human reproductive disease. As the field of poultry research develops, the health and function of the layer hen and broiler breeder ovary will be an important point of study for both agricultural and biomedical researchers. One of the challenges presented by this emerging interest is the need for replicable techniques that all researchers can employ in ovarian specimen c…

Understanding risk of chronic pain development and related mental health disparities among transgender people: A review of current literature and future directions.

Biomedical and clinical research has traditionally focused on binary sex assignments as opposed to gender identity. This oversight has resulted in other gender minority populations being understudied. As a result, there is limited literature on chronic pain and mental health in transgender populations. These socially vulnerable individuals may be at increased risk for chronic pain development and related mental health disorders. Transgender individuals experience higher rates of social stigma and discrimination than their cisgender counterparts, and these factors have been linked to an increas

Tumor-derived systems as novel biomedical tools-turning the enemy into an ally.

Cancer is a complex illness that presents significant challenges in its understanding and treatment. The classic definition, "a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body," fails to convey the intricate interaction between the many entities involved in cancer. Recent advancements in the field of cancer research have shed light on the role played by individual cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment as a whole in tumor development and progression. This breakthrough enables the utilization of the tumor and its components as biological

The role of evolutionary biology in research and control of liver flukes in Southeast Asia.

Stimulated largely by the availability of new technology, biomedical research at the molecular-level and chemical-based control approaches arguably dominate the field of infectious diseases. Along with this, the proximate view of disease etiology predominates to the exclusion of the ultimate, evolutionary biology-based, causation perspective. Yet, historically and up to today, research in evolutionary biology has provided much of the foundation for understanding the mechanisms underlying disease transmission dynamics, virulence, and the design of effective integrated control strategies. Here w…
