Pathologic Changes in Subchondral Bone Microarchitecture Differ Between ACLT, NIKI, and MMT Models of Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis.

Subchondral bone remodeling associated with symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA) is an error-driven response affected by abnormal joint loading. Since different injury models of pre-clinical OA may induce unique shifts in joint loading, comparing bone microstructural changes across different rat OA models may clarify the relationship between subchondral bone remodeling and the mechanisms of joint trauma. In this study, we compared bone microstructure measures across meniscal and anterior cruciate ligament models of late-stage rat OA. OA was induced in male Lewis rats using via medial meniscus trans

Impact of elevated sclerostin levels on bone resorption : unravelling structural changes and mineral metabolism disruption.

AIMS: The physiological function of sclerostin remains unknown. Sclerostin is synthesized by osteocytes and operates by inhibiting the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Similarly, it is well established that low levels of sclerostin lead to enhanced bone formation and reduced calciuria, and that high levels of sclerostin are associated with osteoporosis. METHODS: The impact of high levels of recombinant sclerostin on bone and mineral metabolism parameters was analyzed in this study. In male healthy rats, the effects of three elevated doses of sclerostin over a 14-day period were studied, involving bone

Age-Progressive and Gender-Dependent Bone Phenotype in Mice Lacking Both Ebf1 and Ebf2 in Prrx1-Expressing Mesenchymal Cells.

Ebfs are a family of transcription factors regulating the differentiation of multiple cell types of mesenchymal origin, including osteoblasts. Global deletion of Ebf1 results in increased bone formation and bone mass, while global loss of Ebf2 leads to enhanced bone resorption and decreased bone mass. Targeted deletion of Ebf1 in early committed osteoblasts leads to increased bone formation, whereas deletion in mature osteoblasts has no effect. To study the effects of Ebf2 specifically on long bone development, we created a limb bud mesenchyme targeted Ebf2 knockout mouse model by using paired

Evaluation of a new experimental model to study bone healing after ridge expansion with simultaneous implant placement--a pilot study in minipigs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the suitability of a minipig model for the study of bone healing and osseointegration of dental implants following bone splitting and expansion of narrow ridges. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In four minipigs, the mandibular premolars and first molars were extracted together with removal of the buccal bone plate. Three months later, ridge splitting and expansion was performed with simultaneous placement of three titanium implants per quadrant. On one side of the mandible, the expanded bone gap between the implants was filled with an alloplastic biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP)

Treatment Outcomes for Distal Radius Fractures: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are among the most prevalent in upper-extremity injuries, particularly in older adults and individuals with osteoporosis. The common treatment options include surgical interventions such as volar locking plate (VLP) fixation and percutaneous pinning, as well as conservative strategies like splinting and bracing. However, the comparative effectiveness of these modalities remains unclear. This study aims to compare the functional outcomes and complication rates associated with VLP, percutaneous pinning, bracing, and splinting in the treatment of DRFs.

Anomalous Flexor Carpi Radialis Anatomy During Volar Distal Radius Approach: Two Case Reports.

Volar locking plates become the standard treatment for distal radius fractures and are mostly applied through volar approaches that rely on the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) as a superficial landmark. Although usually straightforward, anomalous flexor musculature may complicate exposure, misdirect dissection and increase the risk of iatrogenic neurovascular injury. We report two rare anatomical variants encountered during open reduction and internal fixation: FCR brevis (FCRB) associated with anomalous insertion of the pronator quadratus, and complete agenesis of the FCR. Both substantially alte

Skeletal Fixation in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Patient-Specific Implants Versus Stock Plates.

Patient-specific implants (PSIs) are increasingly used in craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery, but their advantages over stock plates in long-term outcomes remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared PSIs and stock plates in 4 surgical categories: mandibular reconstruction, non-cleft orthognathic surgery, cleft orthognathic surgery, and mandibular fractures. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus identified comparative studies reporting quantitative outcomes. Meta-analyses were conducted for surgical accuracy, skeletal stability, relapse rates, complication rates

Importance of the Posterior Plate in Three-Column Tibial Plateau Fractures: A Finite Element Analysis and Clinical Validation.

OBJECTIVE: Dual-plate fixation was thought to be the gold standard for treating complicated bicondylar tibial plateau fractures, yet it was found to be hard to accommodate the posterior column in three-column fractures. Currently, column-specific fixation is becoming more and more recognized, but no comprehensive investigation has been performed to back it up. Therefore, the objective of this study was to validate the importance of posterior column fixation in the three-column tibial fractures by a finite element (FE) analysis and clinical study. METHODS: In FE analysis, three models were dev

Limb Fractures Treated With the Novel Plate Osteosynthesis Application Technique: Second to Minimally Invasive Plates osteosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: The main aim of this article was to propose a new concept of minimally invasive surgery for treating limb fractures, named as second to minimally invasive plates osteosynthesis (STMIPO). METHODS: We have described the STMIPO technique in a step-wise and standardized manner based on our findings from a study involving six patients treated at our institution. All patients with fracture achieved satisfactory outcomes. RESULTS: Ours clinical trials have shown that the STMIPO technique can be successfully applied in various limb fractures, including fibula fractures, tibial fractures,

Cadaveric Simulation in Rib Plating is Beneficial for Helping Surgical Trainees to Assimilate New Technologies.

PURPOSE: Rib fixation procedures are being performed more frequently as they have shown multiple advantages over traditional non-operative management in well-selected patients. We have developed a rib-fixation simulation on cadavers for use by surgical residents in attempt to improve their comfort, knowledge and ability to use this new technology. METHODS: Residents in years 3 through 5 of training attended a rib-fixation simulation course with cadavers. Trauma faculty and representatives of manufacturers of rib-fixation hardware participated. The simulation consisted of groups of residents r

Are Observational Studies on Distal Radius Fracture Treatment Robust? An E-value Approach to Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Reported complication frequencies after distal radius fracture (DRF) treatment vary widely in the literature and are based mostly on observational evidence. Whether that evidence is sufficiently robust to use in practice is controversial. The E-value is an innovative sensitivity analysis that quantitates the robustness of observational evidence against unmeasured confounders, whereby a greater E-value usually implies more robust evidence and vice versa; with DRF complications, this approach can help guide readers to a more confident interpretation of the available evidence. BMP signaling is required to form the anterior neural plate border in ascidian embryos.

Cranial neurogenic placodes have been considered vertebrate innovations. However, anterior neural plate border (ANB) cells of ascidian embryos share many properties with vertebrate neurogenic placodes; therefore, it is now believed that the last common ancestor of vertebrates and ascidians had embryonic structures similar to neurogenic placodes of vertebrate embryos. Because BMP signaling is important for specifying the placode region in vertebrate embryos, we examined whether BMP signaling is also involved in gene expression in the ANB region of ascidian embryos. Our data indicated that Admp,

Flexor Pollicis Tendon Reconstruction With Allograft Tendon After Rupture: Technique and Case Series.

Division or rupture of the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon can occur secondary to direct injury, laceration, or attritional rupture. Attritional rupture is particularly common in the setting volar plate fixation of a distal radius fracture. FPL tendon discontinuity can be restored through either primary repair or reconstruction. Primary repair can be challenging if not done within the first few days after injury secondary to contraction of the FPL muscle with retraction of the proximal tendon. Repair in this environment can lead to tension across the repair site as well as necessary flexio

Fatigue behavior of biodegradable Zn-Li binary alloys in air and simulated body fluid with pure Zn as control.

Zn-Li-based alloys have drawn great attention as promising candidates for load-bearing sites, such as intramedullary nails and bone plates. They possess high monotonic strength (over 500MPa) and better pitting resistance with lithium-rich layers acting as barriers for corrosion attack under (quasi-)static conditions. However, their response to dynamic loadings such as fatigue is still unknown. Herein, the corrosion fatigue behavior of a series of Zn-Li binary alloys with different lithium addition amounts was tested in simulated body fluid. Tensile and fatigue strength of the materials were pr…

Observations on the ultrastructure of the oral appendages of Glenea cantor Fabricius (Coleoptera: Lamiinae).

Using scanning electron microscopy, we examined the gross and ultrastructure morphology of the mandibles, labial palpi, and mandibular palpi of adult male and female Glenea cantor beetles. The morphology of these parts, both in their gross and ultrastructure, varied significantly between males and females. The lengths of the mandible, labial palpi, and mandibular palpi were clearly noticeably longer in females than in men, which is mostly related to the oviposition mechanism. In terms of the ultrastructural morphology of the mandibles, labial palpi, and mandibular palpi, seven types of sensill

A comparison of outcomes of locking versus non-locking plate fixation for the distal fibula fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: A locking plate (LP) or non-locking plate (NLP) can be used for distal fibula fracture fixation. However, the advantages of LP over NLP in patients with distal fibula fractures are not clear. In terms of indications, the role of the two plates probably differs; however, to draw comparative conclusions, we conceptualized this systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that directly compared the two plates, wherein both groups' indications and baseline parameters were similar. METHODS: An electronic literature search was performed using PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane
