BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities that increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may be at higher risk of developing MetS due to chronic inflammation, altered adipokine profiles, and the effects of corticosteroid treatment. However, the prevalence of MetS in IBD patients remains inconsistent across studies. This meta-analysis aims to estimate the prevalence of MetS in IBD patients and compare its occurrence between Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).
METHODS: A systematic search

BACKGROUND: The present study explores the effect of sociodemographics and comorbidities on the calculated minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) scores in patients with medically treated chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The importance of delineating a threshold to indicate clinically meaningful changes perceived by a patient is well acknowledged, yet the influence of patient-specific factors on MCID has not been fully elucidated.
METHODS: Patients with CRS (n = 221) presenting to a tertiary care practice reported their change in disease burde

Background/Objectives: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a major public health concern in Taiwan, particularly in southern regions with high endemicity. While HCV elimination is a national priority, resources are often limited. Relying solely on broad, township-level prevalence rates is inefficient, as the true disease burden can vary dramatically at the village level. Therefore, identifying local hotspots through fine-scale mapping is critical for efficient resource allocation and targeted intervention. This study aimed to validate village-level prevalence estimates and evaluate the eff

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Thailand is high and kidney disease progression remains a problem. Empagliflozin has been known to be used to slow CKD progression, but its accessibility remains limited. This study aimed to assess the cost-utility of empagliflozin for CKD progression in Thailand.
METHODS: A state-transition model was developed consisting of eight health states: five eGFR health states (G2, G3a, G3b, G4, and G5), dialysis, kidney transplantation, and death. Empagliflozin 10 mg was assessed as an add-on treatment to standard of care (SoC). The effica

BACKGROUND: In the intensive care unit (ICU), approximately 45.6% of patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) also presented with sepsis, and this cohort exhibited a significantly higher 28-day mortality rate compared to sepsis patients without COPD (23.6% versus 16.4%). A novel nomogram is necessary to predict the risk of mortality within 28 days for sepsis patients with COPD.
METHODS: Clinical data from 501 sepsis patients with COPD were sourced from the MIMIC-IV database. These data were randomly allocated into a training cohort and a validation cohort in a 3:1

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is prevalent among patients with obesity, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) may improve kidney outcomes, but its long-term effects remain unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the association between bariatric surgery and mortality and major adverse kidney events (MAKE) in patients with a diagnosis of CKD and severe obesity.
METHODS: Patients with a diagnosis of CKD (stage ≥3 and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≤60 ml per min per 1.73 m2) and BMI ≥35 kg/m2 or who underwent bariatric

BACKGROUND: The optimal duration of antibiotic treatment for extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) bloodstream infections (BSI) in intensive care unit (ICU) is not established. We aim to evaluate the frequency and clinical outcomesof a short appropriate antibiotic treatment (≤7 days) (SAT) for ESBL-E BSI acquired in the ICU. We specifically assessed the rate of ESBL-E BSI relapse, and in-ICU mortality.
METHOD: All patients who acquired ESBL-E BSI in three ICU in Northern France between January 2011 and June 2022 were included in a multicenter retrospective cohort

BACKGROUND: As the burden of chronic liver disease and the demand for liver transplants (LT) grows, understanding the interplay between access to care and patient outcomes is increasingly important. In this study, we explored patient characteristics and transplant outcomes in patients undergoing LT evaluations, with a focus on identifying risk factors for expedited LT evaluation.
METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent LT evaluation for deceased donor LT between October 2017 and July 2021. Patients were categorized by context: expedited (inpatien

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is common in adolescents. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies (primarily reporting on adult males) have demonstrated abnormal resting-state (RS) brain activity in mTBI. The present study sought to identify RS abnormalities in male and female adolescents with mTBI (no previous mTBI and no previous DSM-5 diagnosis) identified from an outpatient specialty care concussion program setting as a basis for evaluating potential clinical utility. Visit 1 MEG RS data were obtained from 46 adolescents with mTBI (mean age: 15.4 years, 25 females) within 4 months of a mTB

Individuals with Parkinson's disease may be more susceptible to severe coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 outcomes due to advanced age and neurological and systemic impairments. However, the evidence on this association remains inconclusive. This study investigates the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in hospitalized patients with Parkinson's disease. Secondary data from the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System were obtained from the OpenData-SUS platform of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, covering March 2020 to March 2024. Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is arguably the gravest complication of type 2 diabetes with high disease burden and mortality. Its complexity as a chronic disease with acute presentation necessitates rapid access to a multidisciplinary team (MDT), typically comprising vascular surgeons, endocrinologists and podiatrists. We conducted a focused ethnography of 55 (82.5 h) observations, 10 interviews with patients and several opportunistic in-situ conversations with patients and members of the care team at the multidisciplinary foot clinic of a tertiary public hospital in Singapore. In the clinic, the

Intestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), Crohn's disease, malabsorption syndromes, and gastrointestinal fistulae (GIFs) are often characterized by chronic inflammation, epithelial barrier disruption, impaired stromal remodeling, and defective angiogenesis. These multifactorial alterations hinder tissue repair and contribute to poor clinical outcomes, with limited efficacy from current therapeutic options. Despite recent advances in surgical and endoscopic techniques, current treatment options remain limited and are frequently accompanied by high morbidity and costs. In

INTRODUCTION: Developed by the Global Vascular Guidelines committee, the Global Limb Anatomic Staging System (GLASS) is an angiographic scoring system used for quantifying infrainguinal disease extent and predicting treatment success with endovascular techniques (EVT). Currently, no other risk prediction model is available for patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLTI) undergoing EVT. GLASS' validation and adoption outside academic institutions for research are limited. Thus, this longitudinal multicenter prospective study aims to examine GLASS' validity and reliability in predicti
