Evaluation of risk factors for impulse control disorder in Parkinson's disease in northern China.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorder (ICD) is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), but its risk factors are still controversial. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of ICD in northern China and analyze the risk factors associated with ICD, multiple ICDs, and four subtypes. METHODS: A total of 285 PD patients were enrolled in this study. Each patient was screened using the Questionnaire for Impulse and Compulsive Control Disorders (QUIP). Stepwise regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors, and a prediction model was developed. RESULTS

Effects of synthetic cannabinoids on psychomotor, sensory and cognitive functions relevant for safe driving.

Recreational use of Synthetic Cannabinoids (SCs), one of the largest groups of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), has increased globally over the past few years. Driving is a structured process requiring the cooperation of several cognitive and psychomotor functions, organized in different levels of complexity. Each of these functions can be affected when Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of SCs. In order to reduce the likelihood of SC-related road accidents, it is essential to understand which areas of psychomotor performance are most affected by these substances, as well as the severity of i

Jumping to conclusions: Implications for reasoning errors, false belief, knowledge corruption, and impeded learning.

In schizophrenia research, patients who "jump to conclusions" in probabilistic reasoning tasks tend to display impaired decision-making and delusional belief. In five studies, we examined whether jumping to conclusions (JTC) was similarly associated with decision impairments in a nonclinical sample, such as reasoning errors, false belief, overconfidence, and diminished learning. In Studies 1a and 1b, JTC was associated with errors stimulated by automatic reasoning, oddball beliefs such as conspiracy theories, and overconfidence. We traced these deficits to an absence of controlled processing r

Predicting response to cognitive processing therapy: Does trauma history matter?

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) has reliably demonstrated efficacy for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for most patients, however, not all patients derive the same benefit from CPT. The aim of the present study is to identify trauma-related variables that predict differential response to CPT in a sample of treatment-seeking veterans in order to improve individual responses to CPT. METHOD: The present study evaluated demographic, therapy, and trauma-related variables as possible predictors of variable response to CPT in a sample of 259 treatment-seeking vete

A transcultural study of hoarding disorder: Insights from the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, and Brazil.

Though problematic hoarding is believed to be a universal human behavior, investigations of clinically-defined hoarding disorder (HD) have been confined almost exclusively to Western countries. The current investigation sought to describe and directly compare the features of individuals meeting diagnostic criteria for HD across four distinct cultural settings. Participants were 82 individuals meeting DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for HD, recruited and assessed by trained clinicians at one of four project sites: London, Barcelona, Fukuoka, and Rio de Janeiro. A series of semi-structured interviews

Manualised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa: Use of Treatment Modules in the ANTOP Study.

Standardised treatment manuals facilitate therapy planning and enhance comparability for research purposes. Within the Anorexia Nervosa Treatment of Out Patients (ANTOP) study, the largest multisite outpatient intervention trial in anorexia nervosa (AN) to date, manualised enhanced cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT-E) was offered as one treatment modality. The manual consisted of 9 modules, of which Motivation, Nutrition, Formulation and Relapse Prevention were compulsory. Homework worksheets were provided, to ensure the transfer of therapeutic improvements to daily life. This study investiga

Functional abdominal pain disorders in children.

Chronic abdominal pain is a common problem in pediatric practice. The majority of cases fulfill the Rome IV criteria for functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs). At times, these disorders may lead to rather serious repercussions. Area covered: We have attempted to cover current knowledge on epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors related to pathophysiology, clinical evaluation and management of children with FAPDs. Expert commentary: FAPDs are a worldwide problem with a pooled prevalence of 13.5%. There are a number of predisposing factors and pathophysiological mechanisms including st

A Parallel Adaboost-Backpropagation Neural Network for Massive Image Dataset Classification.

Image classification uses computers to simulate human understanding and cognition of images by automatically categorizing images. This study proposes a faster image classification approach that parallelizes the traditional Adaboost-Backpropagation (BP) neural network using the MapReduce parallel programming model. First, we construct a strong classifier by assembling the outputs of 15 BP neural networks (which are individually regarded as weak classifiers) based on the Adaboost algorithm. Second, we design Map and Reduce tasks for both the parallel Adaboost-BP neural network and the feature ex

Power and promise of narrative for advancing physical therapist education and practice.

This perspective article provides a justification for and an overview of the use of narrative as a pedagogical tool for educators to help physical therapist students, residents, and clinicians develop skills of reflection and reflexivity in clinical practice. The use of narratives is a pedagogical approach that provides a reflective and interpretive framework for analyzing and making sense of texts, stories, and other experiences within learning environments. This article describes reflection as a well-established method to support critical analysis of clinical experiences; to assist in uncove

Long-term effects of controllability or the lack of it on coping abilities and stress resilience in the rat.

Findings suggest that stress-induced impaired learning and coping abilities may be attributed more to the psychological nature of the stressor, rather than its physical properties. It has been proposed that establishing controllability over stressors can ameliorate some of its effects on cognition and behavior. Gaining controllability was suggested to be associated with the development of stress resilience. Based on repeated exposure to the two-way shuttle avoidance task, we previously developed and validated a behavioral task that leads to a strict dissociation between gaining controllability

Effects of acute restraint stress on set-shifting and reversal learning in male rats.

Exposure to acute stress alters cognition; however, few studies have examined the effects of acute stress on executive functions such as behavioral flexibility. The goal of the present experiments was to determine the effects of acute periods of stress on two distinct forms of behavioral flexibility: set-shifting and reversal learning. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained and tested in an operant-chamber-based task. Some of the rats were exposed to acute restraint stress (30 min) immediately before either the set-shifting test day or the reversal learning test day. Acute stress had no effect

Treatment of social anxiety disorder using online virtual environments in second life.

Over 80% of people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) do not receive any type of treatment, despite the existence of effective evidence-based treatments. Barriers to treatment include lack of trained therapists (particularly in nonmetropolitan areas), logistical difficulties (e.g., cost, time, transportation), concerns regarding social stigma, and fear of negative evaluation from health care providers. Interventions conducted through electronic communication media, such as the Internet, have the potential to reach individuals who otherwise would not have access to evidence-based treatments. Se

Post-learning REM sleep deprivation impairs long-term memory: reversal by acute nicotine treatment.

Rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REM-SD) is associated with spatial learning and memory impairment. During REM-SD, an increase in nicotine consumption among habitual smokers and initiation of tobacco use by non-smokers have been reported. We have shown recently that nicotine treatment prevented learning and memory impairments associated with REM-SD. We now report the interactive effects of post-learning REM-SD and/or nicotine. The animals were first trained on the radial arm water maze (RAWM) task, then they were REM-sleep deprived using the modified multiple platform paradigm for 24h. Du

Prevalence of major neurological disorders among geriatric population in the metropolitan city of Kolkata.

Well-conducted neuroepidemiological studies for the geriatric population are rare in India. In view of the growing aging population, we planned to determine the prevalence of common neurological disorders among the elderly population in the city of Kolkata. This was a cross-sectional study of a stratified random sample of the city population and carried in two stages through house to house survey. Initially, trained non-medical workers screened the cases with a validated family questionnaire and then a neurologist examined all the screened positive cases. A validated neuropsychological screeni

Acoustic Analysis of Primary Care Patient-Clinician Conversations to Screen for Cognitive Impairment.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive impairment (CI) is often underdetected in primary care due to time and resource constraints. Passive analysis of clinical dialogue may offer an accessible approach for screening. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether audio recordings of patient-physician dialogue during routine primary care visits can be used to identify CI using acoustic speech features and machine learning (ML). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This diagnostic study, conducted from August 2020 through December 2021 among older primary care patients, involved audio recording primary care visits using a microp

Treatment of Persisting Symptoms after Concussion with Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Double-Blinded, Randomized, Controlled Trial.

Following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), up to 30% of individuals will experience persisting symptoms beyond 3 months. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that has shown promise as an intervention for persisting symptoms after concussion (PSaC); however, to determine efficacy, larger clinical trials are required. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of high-frequency rTMS targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as an intervention for PSaC. This randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled study re
