A previously well 39 year old woman presented with severe localized and painful anorectal ulceration. There were no other associated symptoms apart from arthritis of the hips and fingers. Since anti-Helicobacter pylori-immunoglobulin G antibody tested positive, eradication therapy was administered using rabeprazole, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin. Eight patients managed for bowel injury following induced abortion were studied for the pattern of morbidity and mortality. The patients were aged 18-39 years. Three of them were married, five were single. Two of the cases were detected at the time of termination of pregnancy. The interval from termination of pregnancy to presentation in hospital was two days to two weeks in the other six patients. The courses of 90 patients with left-sided ulcerative colitis that was unresponsive or intolerant to conventional therapy were retrospectively reviewed. They had been treated with 5-aminosalicylic acid enemas (mesalamine) on a long-term basis. After an initial 12-week course of treatment, 87% of the patients had improved by at least one grade of inflammation (improvement), and 54% of these were asymptomatic with normal colonic mucosa (remission). This is a report about five patients who suffered a perforation of the colon during a barium-sulfate enema. In one case, barium leaked into the intraperitoneal cavity causing a barium peritonitis. In the other four cases, leakage into the retroperitoneal cavity occurred. All patients underwent surgical removal and drainage of the barium-sulfate and subsequently required a colostomy.
