This study is a review of 127 hands in 100 patients in whom one or two FDS tendons were used to correct claw-hand deformity and/or loss of opposition of the thumb. In lumbrical replacement the results were graded as excellent in 16 hands (21%) and good in 43 hands (57%). For opponensplasty the results were excellent in 26 hands (32%) and good in 42 hands (51%). Heterotopic ossification can occur in neurologic disorders, burns, musculoskeletal trauma, and metabolic disorders. In addition to producing the complications of contracture, skin breakdown, and pain, it can cause peripheral nerve entrapment. Severe forefoot infections may lead to limb loss, even if addressed aggressively. Infection or gangrene that compromises the plantar skin flap may preclude a standard transmetatarsal or midfoot amputation, thereby culminating in a below-knee amputation. The effects of some cholinergic agents and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on neurally mediated contractions of in vitro cat ciliary muscle preparations were studied. The contractile response to trains of stimuli was enhanced by eserine and completely blocked by tetrodotoxin or atropine. Over an eight-month period beginning in November 1969, 53 patients received 63 fascia lata heart valves at the Toronto General Hospital. The late results of this form of valve substitution are reviewed.
