Meniere's disease remains today a poorly understood and difficult-to-manage inner ear problem. Numerous articles have been written about the medical and surgical management of Meniere's disease. Previous authors have suggested that a metabolic abnormality may be a contributing etiologic factor in the disease. Since 1976, 384 patients with Meniere's disease were seen in the Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Disorders of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In 180 of these patients, the results of a metabolic evaluation were reviewed, including the five-hour glucose tolerance test, lipi

Circulatory disorders, which are well documented in most parts of the human body, are not well documented in the inner ear, although they are expected to occur. It has been previously shown that experimental occlusion of the labyrinthine artery in animals results in severe degenerative changes, fibrosis, and new bone formation in the cochlea. Accordingly, this paper presents presumptive evidence that depriving the human cochlea of its blood supply after surgical removal of an acoustic tumor results in severe degenerative changes that progress to total ossification of the cochlear spaces. This

There is both clinical and laboratory evidence that hearing loss can result from congenital and acquired hypothyroidism. The reversibility of this process, however, and its incidence and pathophysiology are not universally agreed upon. Laboratory animals rendered hypothyroid with radioactive iodine 131 or propylthiouracil demonstrated normal perilymph sodium and potassium levels but increased auditory thresholds for N1N2 response and brain stem evoked audiometry as well as a crystallized consistency of the bone of the bullae and cochleae, ossicular abnormalities, obliteration of the oval and r

The transsphenoid approach to cystic lesions of the petrous tip has been made possible by the advances in techniques for diagnosis. These include polytomography, improved angiography, and computer tomographic (CT) brain scanning. The results of these studies can determine the size, shape, and thickness of the cystic lesion, as well as its exact relationship to the sphenoid sinus. A number of surgical approaches have been used to reach the cystic lesion of the petrous apex. Most notably, these include the middle fossa extradural craniotomy and posterior fossa craniotomy. These surgical techniqu

Patients with a fluctuating hearing loss, episodic vertigo and tinnitus with no known aetiological cause were investigated as cases of Menière's disorder. Transtympanic electrocochleography was found to be helpful in reaching the diagnosis of an inner ear disorder. In 65% of the patients, a large DC potential was recorded which caused an apparent widening of the summating potential/action potential (SP/AP) waveform. This potential was thought to be an SP which enhanced relative to the AP component, and believed to be related directly to the presence of endolymphatic hydrops. A method is descri

Organs of rats flown for 19.5 days on board the Cosmos-782 biosatellite were investigated morphologically and cytochemically. After flight, as a result of drastic decrease or loss of static load on the musculeskeletal system in zero-g, the rats developed mineral metabolism changes that morphologically appeared as osteoporosis of spongy bones, their periosteocytic osteolysis, as well as inhibition of red blood cell precursors in bone marrow, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles. The development of stress-reaction which seemed to increase at certain flight stages (launch and re-entry) and w

The current state of medical practice is going through tremendous and rapid changes. There is an increasing prevalence of burnout among physicians, where they are questioning the value of practicing medicine. There is also a growing frustration among patients over reduced access to physicians, feeling rushed at appointments and generally feeling that they are not being heard. These conditions point to a sense among doctors and patients that the doctor-patient relationship is compromised without a viable pathway to repair this vital connection. In this paper, I want to show how applying philoso

PURPOSE: Mutations of PCDH15, the gene encoding protocadherin 15, cause either nonsyndromic deafness DFNB23 or Usher syndrome type 1F (USH1F) in humans and deafness with balance problems in Ames waltzer (av) mice. Persons with USH1 usually begin to exhibit signs of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in early adolescence, but av mice are reported to have functional retinas. In this study, the auditory, visual and molecular biological phenotype of Pcdh15av-5J and Pcdh15av-Jfb mice is characterized, and their usefulness as animal models of USH1 is evaluated.
METHODS: Hearing thresholds of mice between 6

Usher syndrome (USH) is the most frequent cause of combined deaf-blindness in man. It is clinically and genetically heterogeneous and at least 12 chromosomal loci are assigned to three clinical USH types, namely USH1A-G, USH2A-C, USH3A (Davenport, S.L.H., Omenn, G.S., 1977. The heterogeneity of Usher syndrome. Vth Int. Conf. Birth Defects, Montreal; Petit, C., 2001. Usher syndrome: from genetics to pathogenesis. Annu. Rev. Genomics Hum. Genet. 2, 271-297). Mutations in USH type 1 genes cause the most severe form of USH. In USH1 patients, congenital deafness is combined with a pre-pubertal onse

Genodermatoses, such as heritable skin disorders, mostly represent Mendelian conditions. Congenital hypotrichosis (HY) characterize a condition of being born with less hair than normal. The purpose of this study was to characterize the clinicopathological phenotype of a breed-specific non-syndromic form of HY in Hereford cattle and to identify the causative genetic variant for this recessive disorder. Affected calves showed a very short, fine, wooly, kinky and curly coat over all parts of the body, with a major expression in the ears, the inner part of the limbs, and in the thoracic-abdominal

Costeff Syndrome, which is caused by mutations in the OPTIC ATROPHY 3 (OPA3) gene, is an early-onset syndrome characterized by urinary excretion of 3-methylglutaconic acid (MGC), optic atrophy and movement disorders, including ataxia and extrapyramidal dysfunction. The OPA3 protein is enriched in the inner mitochondrial membrane and has mitochondrial targeting signals, but a requirement for mitochondrial localization has not been demonstrated. We find zebrafish opa3 mRNA to be expressed in the optic nerve and retinal layers, the counterparts of which in humans have high mitochondrial activity.

The paper explores the thoughts and manipulations of tuina at "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" for the treatment of acute pharyngitis based on "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" in Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic). "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" refer to the special acupoints of yang meridians, mostly located at the neck region. It is the "window" of the head and neck, acting on dispersing wind and regulating qi and blood by opening the "window". Acute pharyngitis is caused by the invasion of exogenous wind and heat to the throat or by re-attack of exogenous factors and h

BACKGROUND: Unpredictable attacks of vertigo with or without emesis, unilateral hearing loss, and tinnitus characterize the inner ear disorder that is classified as part of Meniere's disease (MD). While the pathological final stage with cochleovestibular hydrops seems to be certain as a component of MD, there are many uncertainties with respect to the multifactorial pathogenesis. It is certain that the disease can have effects in addition to the attack, which questions the treatment of things that were previously taken for granted. Persistent perceptual and postural dizziness [19] and reactive

Deafness is a highly heterogeneous disorder which stems, for 50%, from genetic origins. Sensory transduction relies mainly on sensory hair cells of the cochlea, in the inner ear. Calcium is key for the function of these cells and acts as a fundamental signal transduction. Its homeostasis depends on three factors: the calcium influx, through the mechanotransduction channel at the apical pole of the hair cell as well as the voltage-gated calcium channel at the base of the cells; the calcium buffering via Ca2+-binding proteins in the cytoplasm, but also in organelles such as mitochondria and the

The Nodulus and Uvula (NU) (lobules X and IX of the cerebellar vermis) form a prominent center of vestibular information processing. Over decades, fundamental and clinical research on the NU has uncovered many aspects of its function. Those include the resolution of a sensory ambiguity inherent to inertial sensors in the inner ear, the otolith organs; the use of gravity signals to sense head rotations; and the differential processing of self-generated and externally imposed head motion. Here, I review these works in the context of a theoretical framework of information processing called the in

One of the earliest mapped human deafness genes, DIAPH1, encodes the formin DIAPH1. To date, at least three distinct mutations in the C-terminal domains and two additional mutations in the N-terminal region are associated with autosomal dominant hearing loss. The underlying molecular mechanisms are not known, and the role of formins in the inner ear is not well understood. In this study, we use biochemical assays to test the hypotheses that autoinhibition and/or actin assembly activities are disrupted by DFNA1 mutations. Our results indicate that C-terminal mutant forms of DIAPH1 are functiona

INTRODUCTION: In the last decades have been increasing cases of inner ear disorders and among them is included hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo, on that way the demand for new treatments is growing, with low-level laser therapy (LLLT) being a highly targeted treatment due to its non-invasive nature.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to investigate the studies of low level laser (LLL) and audiology in recent years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The quantitative bibliometric study was performed by searching scientific articles in the Web of Science - Clarivate Analytics database. The association

The large MAF transcription factor group is a group of transcription factors with an acidic region, a basic region, and a leucine zipper region. Four types of MAF, MAFA, MAFB, c-MAF, and NRL, have been identified in humans and mice. In order to elucidate the functions of the large MAF transcription factor group in vivo, our research group created genetically modified MAFA-, MAFB-, and c-MAF-deficient mice and analyzed their phenotypes. MAFA is expressed in pancreatic β cells and is essential for insulin transcription and secretion. MAFB is essential for the development of pancreatic endocrine
