State-dependent variability of neuronal responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation of the visual cortex.

Electrical brain stimulation is a promising tool for both experimental and clinical applications. However, the effects of stimulation on neuronal activity are highly variable and poorly understood. To investigate the basis of this variability, we performed extracellular recordings in the visual cortex following application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Our measurements of spiking and local field potential activity exhibit two types of response patterns which are characterized by the presence or absence of spontaneous discharge following stimulation. This variability can be partia

Ambroxol effect on transepithelial electrical potential difference of isolated tracheal wall.

The effect of ambroxol on ion transport in isolated tracheal wall was studied by the electrophysiological (Ussing) method. It was shown that ambroxol influenced one component of the transepithelial electrical potential difference (PD), which is related to ion transport processes mechanically stimulated by a jet of bathing fluid from a peristaltic pump. The other component of the PD, which represented stable ion transport processes, was not influenced by the drug. The stimulation-dependent component of the PD was deeply inhibited, or sometimes even eliminated, by a change in the pH of the stimu

Vagus-induced changes in ventricular electrophysiology of the dog heart with and without beta-blockade.

We tested the electrophysiologic effects of vagus stimulation in six dogs in the presence or absence of beta-adrenoreceptor blockade. Monophasic action potentials were obtained by the suction electrode technique and programmed electrical stimulation was used to determine heart rate-independent changes in 50 and 90% repolarization times and in the effective (V-ERP) and functional (V-FRP) refractory periods of the right ventricle. Vagus stimulation decreased heart rate both in the presence and in the absence of beta-adrenoceptor blockade. It also increased action potential duration and refractor

Effects of magnetic sacral root stimulation on anorectal pressure and volume.

PURPOSE: Electrical sacral root stimulation induces defecation in spinal cord injury patients and is currently under examination as a new therapy for fecal incontinence. In contrast to electrical stimulation, magnetic stimulation is noninvasive. To gain more insight into the mechanism of action of sacral root stimulation, we studied the effects of magnetic sacral root stimulation on anorectal pressure and volume in both fecal incontinence and spinal cord injury patients. METHODS: Three groups were examined: 14 healthy volunteers, 18 fecal incontinence patients, and 14 spinal cord injury patie

Evidence for a dual pelvic nerve influence on large bowel motility in the cat.

1. The effects of efferent electric pelvic nerve stimulation on colorectal motility and blood flow with emphasis on the motor responses in consecutive colonic and rectal segments were studied in anaesthetized cats. It was considered of particular interest to explore whether selective pharmacological blockade and graded nerve stimulations might reveal the presence of functionally differentiated efferent fibres controlling colonic motility.2. Pelvic nerve stimulation induced immediate and sustained colorectal contractions and a simultaneous increase of the over-all colonic blood flow. The excita

[Chronic intracerebral stimulation and abnormal movements: why and when? Major therapeutic advances in the 90s].

Surgical procedures for abnormal movements progressively evolved toward microinvasive techniques performed under stereotaxic control. The next advance was the development of well-tolerated intracerebral stimulation with reversible effects. The quality of the results depends on optimal definition of the stimulation target. Optimally, the surgical protocol includes stereotaxic ventriculography to identify targets followed by electrical activity recordings of the structures crossed by the electrode. Finally, a minute study of the stimulation effects is performed under sterotaxic control while the

Wireless Magnetoelectric Stimulation Platform Orchestrating Multicellular Coupling in Complex Neurovascularized Tissue Regeneration.

Bone regeneration is a well-orchestrated biological process involving coordinate efforts of multiple cells, cytokines, and signals, among which nerves play a dominant role in regulating osteogenesis. Draw inspiration from the inherent electroactive features of bone and nerve, bioelectric implant providing wireless delivery of electrical stimulation (ES), is an emerging alternative to conventional invasive electrode-based therapy. Herein, we develop a lead-free magnetoelectric (ME) core-shell MnFe2O4@Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (MFO@BCZT) nanoheterostructure-integrated biodegradable 3D-printed hyd

Painful Adipose Tissue Disorder: A Systematic Review of Interventions for Dercum's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Dercum's disease (DD) is a rare connective tissue disorder characterized by multiple painful progressive adipose deposits. No definitive treatment for DD exists; therefore, the purpose of this study was to aggregate the current treatment options and outcomes in the literature to guide clinical decision-making regarding intervention. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across the selected databases, PubMed, Web of Science, and clinicaltrials.gov , for studies including at least 3 patients with DD without concurrent lipedema. Given the rarity of the pathology, descriptiv

Formation of a novel supraspinal-spinal connectome that relearns the same motor task after complete paralysis.

Having observed that electrical spinal cord stimulation and training enabled four patients with paraplegia with motor complete paralysis to regain voluntary leg movement, the underlying mechanisms involved in forming the newly established supraspinal-spinal functional connectivity have become of great interest. van den Brand et al. (Science 336: 1182-1185, 2012) subsequently, demonstrated the recovery, in response to spinal electro-neuromodulation and locomotor training, of voluntary stepping of the lower limbs in rats that received a lesion that is assumed to eliminate all long-descending cor

Rotigaptide Infusion for the First 7 Days After Myocardial Infarction-Reperfusion Reduced Late Complexity of Myocardial Architecture of the Healing Border-Zone and Arrhythmia Inducibility.

Background Survivors of myocardial infarction are at increased risk of late ventricular arrhythmias, with infarct size and scar heterogeneity being key determinants of arrhythmic risk. Gap junctions facilitate the passage of small ions and morphogenic cell signaling between myocytes. We hypothesized that gap junctions enhancement during infarction-reperfusion modulates structural and electrophysiological remodeling and reduces late arrhythmogenesis. Methods and Results Infarction-reperfusion surgery was carried out in male Sprague-Dawley rats followed by 7 days of rotigaptide or saline adminis

Adverse events related to electroacupuncture: a systematic review of single case studies and case series.

OBJECTIVE: Electroacupuncture (EA) is used in the treatment of various diseases through the use of electrical stimulation. Reports of adverse events (AEs) associated with acupuncture are relatively consistent, but the safety of EA has been less well reported. In this systematic review, we provide a summary of the types of AEs related to EA in clinical practice. METHODS: Twelve electronic databases, including those in English (PubMed, Ovid-EMBASE, CENTRAL), Korean (KMbase, KISS, NDSL, KISTI, OASIS), Chinese (CNKI, Wanfang, Weipu) and Japanese (J-STAGE), were systematically searched for single

Prognostic value of transcranial facial nerve motor-evoked potentials in predicting facial nerve function following cerebellopontine angle tumorectomy.

Facial nerve paralysis is a common complication following cerebellopontine angle (CPA) surgery. This study investigated the prognostic value of facial nerve motor-evoked potentials (FNMEPs) elicited by transcranial electrical stimulation for facial nerve outcome after CPA tumorectomy.A total of 95 patients were enrolled in this study between January 2014 and January 2016. All these patients underwent CPA tumorectomy (unilateral, n = 95; bilateral, n = 1). Intraoperative FNMEP elicited by transcranial electrical stimulation was recorded. The short- and long-term postoperative facial nerve funct

Effect of TENS Versus Placebo on Walking Capacity in Patients With Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: A Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a growing health problem and a leading cause of disability and loss of independence in older adults. It is usually caused by age-related degenerative narrowing of the spinal canals leading to compression and ischemia of the spinal nerves and symptoms of neurogenic claudication. Limited walking ability is the dominant functional impairment caused by LSS. Animal studies suggest increased blood flow to the spinal nerves and spinal cord with superficial paraspinal electrical stimulation. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of paraspi

Comparative study of the effects of capsaicin on the contractility of normal and spinal cord injured human bladders.

In order to investigate the effects of capsaicin on human detrusor contractility in both normal and spinal cord injury (SCI) bladders, a detrusor contractility study was performed in 10 normal and 8 SCI patients using isolated muscle strips. Eight bladder muscle strips were harvested from each patient undergoing surgery. Four strips were treated with capsaicin of 1-1000 microM, and electrical field stimulation and bethanechol were applied to the strips before and after capsaicin administration. The other four strips were pretreated with 40 nmole [D-Arg1, D-Trp7,9,Leu11]-Substance P (spantide)

Intrinsic optical signals in rat neocortical slices measured with near-infrared dark-field microscopy reveal changes in extracellular space.

In the last decade, the measurement of activity-dependent intrinsic optical signals (IOSs) in excitable tissues has become a useful tool for collecting data about spatial patterns of information processing in mammalian brain and spread of excitation. Although the extent of the IOS correlates well with the extent of electrical excitation, its time course is much slower, suggesting that it does not directly monitor the electrical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms responsible for generation of IOSs. Coronal neocortical brain slices of juvenile rats were electricall

Effect of reversible dorsal cold block on the persistence of inhibition generated by spinal reflexes.

The effects of bilateral focal cooling of dorsolateral thoracic spinal cord on segmental reflex pathways to the triceps surae muscles were assessed in decerebrate cats from the reflex forces produced by single shocks or trains of electrical stimuli applied to the ipsilateral caudal cutaneous sural and the contralateral tibial nerves. The validity of the dorsal cold block technique as a substitute for acute surgical dorsal hemisection was established by showing that focal cooling reliably reproduced the stretch-induced "clasp knife" inhibition of triceps surae reflexive force seen following dor

Non-cholinergic transmission by post-ganglionic motor neurones in the mammalian bladder.

1. In mucosa-free preparations of the detrusor muscle electrical stimulation with 0.1 msec pulses has been utilized to reveal the non-cholinergic nature of most, if not all, of the post-ganglionic motor neurones in the guinea-pig bladder.2. The twitches elicited by 0.1 msec pulses were abolished by tetrodotoxin, but were not reduced by dimethyltubocurarine or by hexamethonium. Hexamethonium was nevertheless present in all the experiments in order to restrict acetylcholine action to ;muscarinic' receptors in the muscle fibres.3. There was little or no diminution in the twitches after prolonged

Sub-second striatal dopamine release measured by in vivo voltammetry.

High speed cyclic voltammetry was used to measure electrically stimulated striatal dopamine release in vivo with 25 ms time resolution. Dopamine release after 1 s stimulations was readily detectable and could be manipulated by drugs known to influence dopaminergic neurones. Using data-averaging dopamine release could be detected following stimulus trains as short as 100 ms. The use of carbon fibre microelectrodes gave a spatial resolution better than 5 micron.

Beta-adrenergic drugs do not affect phrenic nerve afterdischarge.

In anesthetized cats, a carotid sinus nerve was stimulated electrically. After this stimulation the time course of the afterdischarge in the phrenic nerve activity was studied in the control situation, during infusion of isoprenalin and after administration of metoprolol. The time courses were identical in all situations. It is concluded that in spite of the fact that the beta-adrenergic drugs change the steady state phrenic activity, the afterdischarge is unchanged and therefore probably mediated by a separate mechanism. A comparison is made with analogous findings in patients with a hyperven
